Method Man is ready to go gangsta on Fox.

The Wu-Tang emcee is slamming the network for taking the "ghetto" out of Method & Red, his new sitcom with fellow rap star Redman.

"This is frustrating for me, and it's not turning out for me as expected," Method Man bitched to the Los Angeles Times in an interview appearing Saturday. The hip-hopster said that even though he's an executive producer he's been unable to exert any creative control over the project.

"I'm trying to keep this show ghetto, and there's a way for it to be both ghetto and intelligent. But it's not going that way."

Recycling the premise behind The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Method & Red follows two rich rappers who move to a mostly white affluent neighborhood in New Jersey and predictably turn the community upside down with their antics.

The show debuted last Wednesday to an audience of 8 million--a decent showing for a summer series. But critics assailed the sitcom as nothing more than a collection of racial stereotypes.

Method Man says that while the urban comedy retains a certain hip-hop flavor, it's doesn't jibe with the original subversive vision he and Method & Red's producers intended.

"I know what I wanted this show to be, but there's been too much compromise on our side and not enough on their side," Method said. "I want more ghetto stuff but all they care about are people who have Nielsen boxes."

Aside from the watered-down subject matter, Method Man lashed out at the "lame jokes" which have managed to find their way into scripts. He also bemoaned the use of a laugh track, which he said he never agreed to.

I'm telling you... there is NOT A SHOW IN THE UNIVERSE that Fox won't try to dumb down.

RAWDEAL

I've seen the first three episodes of M&R show and I thought that it wasn't as good as it could be, now I know why (the ability of Fox to fuck up everything by making it "viewer friendly" and not as it is intended to be portraid by the people behind the show). I'm not saying that I don't like the show, I like it a lot (hey it's about Meth and Red) , it's just that it could be better.

Of course there isn't. The crass, disgusting, stupid garbage that FOX is known for began with Married With Children (I'm sorry but that was the most moronic, unfunny garbage ever) and continues with The Swan, American Idol and all the other crap they have on their schedule.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I am sure that this statement sums up pretty much how Joss felt dealing w/ Fox as well, less the "ghetto" part of course.

MER

I never really liked the idea of it since I think I knew already it would be a dumb down version like the Fat Boys movie, but with episodes.

What?? All a network cares about is Nielsen ratings??
How can it be!?!
Moron.
Apparently this guy never got the lesson called: TV 101: "It's not about your show, dearie. It's about the COMMERCIALS. Which is why we use Nielsen."
Sheesh.

Sure, if you don't mind being blacklisted and boycotted because you advertise on Fux, go right ahead with the commercials.

You wanna put paid to Fux's antics, call up the companies that advertise during this crap, and tell them WHY you're cutting them off as a consumer - enough people do that, it hits them in the wallet, and they take notice.

Also, some advertisers (if you've been paying attention) HAVE pulled out from advertising on Fux because they do not want their products associated with the kind of garbage Fux is passing off as "entertainment" (See Also: Dilbertism - Irritainment)these days.

Their neilsen ratings are also tanking, and that is going to just encourage the exodus.

It's all about the money, cut off the head, and the monster dies... it just takes a while.

Meanwhile, the smart money is on Universal, who's gonna rake it in like mad come 2005, especially if they're smart enough (and rest assured they are) to throw in for Firefly merchandise and collectors items and action figures, etc etc, which'll prolly eat up most of any browncoats disposable income in short order, heheheh, not that we mind.

In essence, that argument's beating a horse that's already dead, and just doesn't have the good sense to lay down and die.
