Is Firefly destined for the chopping block? We hope not, but Television Columnist Tim Goodman over at the San Franscisco Chronicle thinks so. Here is what he had to say about the fate of the Joss Whedon Sci-Fi series.

Quote:

This Friday Fox series was eagerly anticipated, as it came from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon. More mystifying and unintentionally comic than cosmic, it has turned into a sci-fi dud. It ranks in the Nielsen 90s and, worse, often trails the show that follows it, "John Doe," by a couple million viewers. That means Fox viewers are skipping the 8 p. m. hour and then watching at 9 p.m. -- the biggest vote of no confidence there is. Plus, "Firefly" is expensive and Fox has already shelved the two-hour pilot, which was murky and boring. That's called a money loser, and there's no room for those on any network. Bye.

This guy is a joker and has had it in for Firefly since day one. He wrote the only bad review of "The Train Job" that I found online back around Sept 20th when the show premiered.

Don't worry about this Goodman fella. What do you expect from critics? It's unfortunate this bore has a little podium to spew from there in San Fran, but what can you do?

That's very very very true. He HAS had it in for Firefly since day one.

Plus, his information is misquoted. Firefly is is consistanly in the Nielsen 70s, though he claims it's in the Neilsen 90s.

That's libel, isn't it?

EDITED TO ADD: Plus, he pretty much ripped off a Detroit Free Press review that called Serenity "murky and dull." Does this guy even have a mind of his own?

AND, according to Futon Critic, Firefly is still bringing in the advertising dollars ( http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/gofuton.cgi?action=adrates&id=2002g), and that's really all that matters. Not even ratings amount to the importance of advertising revenue.

SERENITY

Firefly has been down in the 90s actually although I think TTJ was in the 70s. This week got a 2.7/5 in the over nights which is poor. I hope FOX stick with it but realistically I don't see there being more than the initial 13 eps showen if ratings don't pick up :(

Actually ratings have EVERYTHING to do with a show's advertising revenue. Ads are sold with a ratings guarantee to advertisers (generally the average no. of viewers in its time slot last season), meaning if a show doesn't meet them - refunds or "make goods" (free ads) are issued. If "Firefly's" case the Friday, 8 p.m. eastern time slot averaged just shy of 6 million viewers last season and considering the show has only surpassed that number once, FOX will already have to refund or give free ads to many of its advertisers.

In other words "Firefly" isn't making money right now, it's losing it.

Personally, I think the whole Nielsen system is otdated for the 21st century.

TIVO is a perfect example of how that system has been rendered useless. How can someone justify that a series that is #2 on the replay list yet recieves such an arbitrary low rating?

As for me, I am not home on Friday nights to watch TV. I am out and about. I leave it to my trusty VCR to record the show.

Rather than rail against Fox, I think fans should rail against the system because its obvious that the system is stacked against quality shows.

The system is stacked in favor of shows that get people to watch commercials - as those are what pays for the shows.
