Is that one a Kitty Hawk Class?

Other than McFarlane, looks good. Only one episode from Favreau (Zathura, Deep Impact), but the ladies from SHIELD and Castle add to the lure. And some other model-type seems to have dyed her hair dark - always a promising sign. Norm MacDonald is fine with me, also.

Has anybody seen "Before I Fall" yet?

Pilot directed by Jon Favreau, good call. But all of the cartoon graphics seem goofy - not as good as Last Action Hero.

Maybe they coulda made the boat a little more palatial - there may have been one or 2 rooms where the entire crew might not have fit in.
I was hoping for something less sophomoric. Even a wonderful director couldn't save it.

Close your eyes and imagine Family Guy's Brian the dog talking, and the two shows are interchangeable. Some of the same sorts of gags and joke set ups.

Seriously, it reminded me of Galaxy Quest, if it were set in its own world.

Also, in 400+ years, we've not only traversed the galaxy, but have met new life forms and intelligent species, peacefully integrated with them, not all of them humanoid, to such a level as to have them serve on our ships.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

OK. I didn't know it was just Family Guy with different clothes. Hadn't seen that info before, now I can just avoid it. What a relief.

I'm wondering if one gag might be each week the palatial size of each ship scene grows larger, perhaps a football field sized room for each crewmember.

Perhaps somebody who will watch it can let me know if that happens.

Maybe also whoever is driving, steering, or navigating can do so while looking in the opposite direction and chatting amiably about unrelated topics.

1 It's FOX

2 It's about a space ship , set hundreds of years in the future.

3 It's FOX...

I'm not very enthusiastic about the show.

- Not sure what this show is trying to be.

- Characters and dialogue seem wooden and stiff.

- If it's supposed to be funny, it's not.

So right now I'd have to say the show is stupid and boring.

BUT .... its only been one episode. I saw a few things that maybe perhaps give signs it may have potential. Have to see a few more shows before its fate is decided in my household.

Yeah, pretty much this. The " humor " is too wooden, set up and obvious. As I said, it's like listening to an episode of Family Guy.

Also, we're suppose to believe that a captain gets assigned to a ship, that he's never even read up on what it looks like or knows the specs or capabilities of the ship before he lays eyes on it for the first time ?

I'd have thought there'd be some sort of ' Welcome to the Orville ' reading material they'd have given him... Oh well.

That's probably why the idiot execs at Fox love it so much. Seth McFarlane is as stiff and unfunny as they come. I remember when he completely bombed as host for the Oscars. It was painful to watch.

I finally got a minute to watch it. You can tell that MacFarlane is used to voice acting still. There are moments where you can see him visually struggle with body position and facial expressions. Some of the other actors are wooden as hell and having trouble finding any character personality.

And tiny girl security chief, yeah, if she came from high gravity she would be short AND built like a body builder. I would have an easier time believing a bodybuilding little person than zero muscle chick.

I like some of the jokes, like his conversation with his "parents" and Kermit. I like that it feels more like people on a ship would feel, than androids on a ship. The Star Trek TNG movies were moving in that direction.

It's got potential. Imma see where it goes.

So is this any good? I never even heard about this show until yesterday.

Saw a review about the unfortunately titled STD that kind of slammed it because it's all LASERS AND EXPLOSIONS and WAR, when Trek used to be about hope for the future and unity and the evolution of mankind.

They had mentioned that they're probably just going to watch Orville instead. From what I'm seeing here, Orville is no DS9.

It's more TOS and TNG, with humor mixed in.

I've never been a huge Trek fan, although I didn't mind TNG and Voyager and even Eneterprise, although that last one just got boring to me after a while. I never really liked the movies all that much either.

I don't know what it was about DS9 though. I really enjoyed that show, like, a LOT. I think it had the most compelling and likable characters of all of the Trek universe.

I'll have to give Orville a chance.

Comparing it to Galaxy Quest isn't quite fair, since that's more of a parody.
The Orville is pretty much a humorous Star Trek without the title.

You're saying Orville is a parody, or isn't?

Galaxy Quest was an excellent SciFi story with great adventure, thrilling heroics, awe of discovery, wonderful humor, and even a little romance. All in context, continuity, and logical story.
Possibly the convention was a parody of Trekkies, tho it seemed on the money.
But TV Show Galaxy Quest was not a parody, that I could tell, and the film was not a parody of any other film.

Yeah. Galaxy Quest was way too good to be a parody.

Parody movies might have been decent back in the days of Airplane and even as far as Hot Shots, but since then they've devolved into the most low brow trash humor in existence. Not even remotely funny or containing any worthwhile content.

GQ does poke fun at SciFi in general, with it focusing on Trek, so it is a bit of a parody.
I'm not saying that's a bad thing, in fact if you can find my old posts about GQ you'll see it's one of my favorites.

The Orville isn't a parody AT ALL. It's Star Trek in all but the name with a bit of humor thrown in.

Yeah. I get what you're saying. I wouldn't go out of my way to say that Galaxy Quest was a serious movie, at least on the surface. It was just a lot of fun, but it had all of the elements to make a great movie that no actual parody movie like the Scary Movie franchise or countless Netflix parody movies have.

I'm actually lucky that I saw it. It didn't look like my kind of movie at all from the previews. I just happened to catch it one night back in the dark ages when I had cable TV.

I think you've sold me on Orville though. I'm at least going to give it a shot. STD doesn't look enjoyable at all, so here's hoping that the Orville can be the Trek we're looking for.

I initially avoided Galaxy Quest because I wasn't much of a Tim Allen fan, but I eventually broke down and watched it.
I have the DVD and Bluray and have seen it dozens of times by now. I think that Amazon is working on a series.

If you go into The Orville expecting Galaxy Quest, you'll be disappointed.
I think McFarlane describes it as "Trek meets MASH".

BTW, I'm not a fan of Seth but I think he's done pretty good with the show.
It's still not "great", but shows a lot of potential.
