I see it is now showing, Friday 8pm ET. Is that the Death Slot, and are they going to be there to hasten their demise?

WISHIMAY

Know what'd be fun? If they had one of those contests like Stargate SG-1 did where if you win you get a part on the show.

I really hope they're done with the "Can you open this jar of pickles for me?" line though.
It gets a little condescending...

Just getting around to watching this show right now.

It's a lot better than I thought it would be. I guess I imagined Family Guy in Space or something.

I agree that they need to stop using the jar of pickles joke. Not because of whatever reason Wishy was whining about, but just because it's not a good joke. Heard it at least 3 times already, and it was at least 3 times too many.

Other than that, it's smart writing, witty dialogue and the cast is great. Here's hoping the 2nd season is as good as the first whenever I get around to it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

2nd season was a lot like the first, except everyone is even more stiff and obnoxious. Political correctness (same sex, robot sex, etc.) hits new sickening heights, and most of the episodes are pretty stupid, although they did manage to toss in a few good ones.

Well... I guess it all depends on the delivery and the spirit of it. It's not as if anybody could say that the first season didn't have a lot of social issues involved in it. A LOT.

But it never felt like it was pandering to a certain audience or being condescending to another audience. It was fun, well thought out, and thought provoking.

Having just watched the entire 1st season a small run down of social issues tackled that pop up in my mind would be...

1. Zoo Bashing (episode 2)
2. Gay marriage. Sex changes. Sex changes decided by parents at birth. (episode 3)
3. Religion Bashing. (episode 3, 6, 12)
4. Single working mothers with test tube babies. (episode 7)
5. Girl Power. (nearly every episode, via inhumanly strong Lt. Alara)

But I didn't find any of it to be written or performed in a condescending or elitist way that put me off. It could have easily been much more poorly executed with lazy writing or actors phoning it all in, and I'm hoping that's not the reason you're noticing it in season 2.

My personal favorite episode was Episode 7 (Majority Rule).

Though I think it probably borrowed heavily from Black Mirror season 3, episode 1 (Nosedive), which was also one of my favorite Black Mirror episodes, I think it did an excellent job telling virtually the same tale on a Macro scale vs the Micro scale of the BM episode.

Though I thoroughly enjoyed season 1 of The Orville as a whole, Majority Rule was a modern masterpiece of TV, IMO.

I don't ever go online and have discussions about anything like this outside of the rare times I post here, so I don't know if there was a lot of discussion about that episode online. Unless I find out otherwise, I'm going to assume that the larger message of that episode was lost on a majority of the viewers.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Watched the second season and I liked it. I thought it was a bit of a missed opportunity to rush Issac's storyline like they did, but I'm assuming that the Orville is one of those shows that nobody knows if it's going to be renewed from year to year, so better to tell it than get cancelled before it comes out. I really like what they did with the last two or three episodes relating to it.

Sad to see Halston Sage go, but I'm sure she's got a lot of other offers right now and should strike while the iron is hot. It seems like they gave her a great sendoff that was open to her coming back if she ever wants to.

Spoiler Alert:

It seems the jar of pickles joke isn't going away, even when it looked as if it was gone for good.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

JAYNEZTOWN

Orville is unqiue in its own way but will others follow the style, it seems to have elements of classic Trek and classic scifi humor

Maybe the Simpsons spin-off Futurama also did it

There's a silly Animated Cartoon called Final Space, the dumb humor is very much like Orville
