FARSCAPEPKWARS

Did you go to the big screen recently, rent out a VHS, buy a DVD or see a film on TV in the past few days ??

I've an open mind on film so I'll be happy to discuss them. Here's what I saw

Arlington Road -
A very good film, and great acting from Tim Robbins and Jeff Bridges.

Les Visiteurs or Just Visiting -
This is a crazy comedy set in both 12th Century France and the modern day, Jean Reno does very well in this

Hard Boiled -
this is a wonderful Hong Kong action movie, film critics who have seen Hard Boiled and predictably quote it almost instinctively whenever Hong Kong action cinema is mentioned, I can see why because this is wonderful. John Woo and stars Chow Yun Fat, Tony Leung, Teresa Mo Sun Kwan

Rob Roy -
Drama and action movie based on the Scottish hero Roy McGregor, very good production

Red Planet
A sci fi movie about going to Mars, its not a great film but the effects are good and overall it is very watchable and not a bad performance. Val Kilmer and Carrie-Anne Moss ( from the Matrix ) are in it

the aviator:
a long movie, which i saw with my self-professed "ADHD movie watcher" girlfriend. about an hour into it, we were tempted to walk out, but decided to stay for the full--what?--2 1/2 hour or so movie. turned out to be a lot better than expected; actually, in retrospect, liked it a lot. when the whole OCD stuff kicks into overdrive, the movie had me hooked. i'm old enough to remember the tail end of tragic/bizarre life of howard hughes, and this movie was a nice background filler for those vague, childhood memories. the movie, as a whole, was well done. being a scorcese film, it was technically brilliant (there's this short dogfight scene that's just..."wow!"), and i got a big kick out of cate blanchett's portrayal of katherine hepburn.

infernal affairs:
hong kong michael-mann-like film noir type of movie: you know, slick visual style with self-conscious soundtrack to a cat and mouse type story. thought it was a stupid title, so i always avoided it at the video stores, but then i read that scorcese and dicaprio (ah, the aviator connection) bought up the rights for the american remake, and i checked out the reviews on www.rottentomatoes.com, most of which were blown away by the film, so i checked it out, and by the end, i was, like, "wow!" it's an absurd story revolving around 2 characters: one is an undercover cop deep in the chinese mafia, and the other is a chinese mafia mole who has infiltrated the cops. and, of course, throughout the movie, each character is trying to figure out the identity of their counterpart/doppleganger/nemesis/etc. definitely a recommended movie.

return of the king, extended edition:
my friends and i made a night out of it, although i had to be at work early the next day. ouch. don't need to say anything about this movie.

arrested development:
funny as hell tv show, the first season of which is on dvd. wanna shoot food out of your mouth? watch this while eating.

okay, gotta go back to work now.

I saw "Meet the Fockers" Monday night.

I was wary that it could be as good as "Meet the Parents" but it is absolutely hilarious! Go see it!

I still want to see The Incredibles and the one that Pierce Brosnan and Woody Harrelson are in (Only after Sunset--I think is the name)

FINN MAC CUMHAL

A Series of Unfortunate Events.

I love fantastical children's movies, so this was a show-in for me, but it turned out to be a very good movie that I think many people will like. It was eerie, morose, even frightening at times, but not overly so. The most frightening scene in the movie involves a striking snake, but the scene cuts away to the narrator who amusingly finds himself momentarily wrestling with a jammed typewriter, and gives the audience (presumably children) a moment to catch their breath. Jim Carrey’s performance was spectacular, completely reinventing himself with each new character he plays, a mark of an exceptional actor. Emily Browning’s part as the inventive Violet Baudelaire is worth mentioning as well. Even at her young age, she brings a certain degree of class to the character. But all in all the real magic is the story, which is quite elaborate, dark, and morose, but somehow hammers out a seamless bittersweet ending and even a moral described in a mysterious letter from the Baudelaire parents that arrives posthumously to remind the orphans that they still have each other. Definitely worth seeing.

King Arthur.

Definitely a good movie, but as the so-called "true story" it's bullshit. I don't think I can actually point out all the historical inaccuracies, some of them are major departures from the recognized historical events. Arthur and his Knights are dressed in early Imperial armor, not what was worn in the fifth century. Trebuchets didn't exist. I find it doubtful that Saxons would have used crossbows in the fifth century. The "Woads" were really supposed to the "Picts," and in reality they were as fearsome a threat to the Britons as the Saxons, if not more so. In fact, the Britons invited the Saxons to Britain to field an army of Foedarati (Barbarian mercenaries) as protection from the Picts. Not even the dates are right. The story takes place during the year 467CE, which perhaps is within the accepted timeframe for the existence of Arthur, but that's its only degree of accuracy. The Romans left Briton in c.410CE and the battle of MonsBadon was sometime around c.500CE. The whole story is just a complete mess.

Its one saving grace was Keira Knightley, who played Guinevere, a young matriarch warrior of the Woads (once again Picts), painted blue with spirally warpaint, half dressed and slicing up Saxons like a crazed Shea. That's definitely worth seeing.

NEEDLESEYE

Just got netflix recently so my movie watching has increased lately. Saw Van Helsing... stinker. I think it would have been better had they made it all comedy. It seemed serious, then wasn't, then was sort of serious, then was funny, but not in a good way. Nice effects though.

Watched Chronicles of Riddick, which I really had wanted to see in the theater but couldn't get to it. I thought it was a good movie that could have been better. I tried to think of it more of a comic book frame of reference, made some of the Necromonger parts seem more bearable.
I say this because I'm a big Pitch Black fan.(the crash sequence in that film is so perfect and Claudia Black has the ultimate death scene EVER! I think I've watched it more times than I can count, what maybe 50+.)
I could grumble endlessly about TCOR, that I had to wait forever to see, but I won't. I do hope there will be more films, continue the story . I really wish they had used the original actress for Jack, too. I wanted more background on her character. OK, I guess I'm asking too much.
As for Vin Deisel, I think his consistent delivery of Riddick holds the movie together.

HJERMSTED

The Indcredibles (for the second time... this time I dragged my dad to see it) -- Absolutely my favorite film of 2004. Purely satisfying on almost every level.

The House of Flying Daggers -- Another beautifully realized film by the creator of 'Hero' but with a slightly less engaging story. Well worth it for the martial arts ballet and beautiful use of color, though.

Carnivale: The Complete First Season -- Wow. I've read many reviews of 'Desperate Housewives' in which lazy writers espouse the phrase "not since 'Twin Peaks'..." but nothing fills the decade+ David Lynch TV void better than Carnivale. Weird and visually compelling with great story arcs and character development. I am considering getting HBO just so I can watch the second season when it starts in January.

Spaced: Series One and Two -- You'll need a multi-format DVD player to watch this British DVD set. The team that brought you 'Shaun of the Dead' put together this hilarious sitcom in 1999 and 2001. This ongoing tale of twenty-something slackers is realized in similar fashion to shows like 'Scrubs' and 'Andy Richter' (sans laugh tracks and with more cut aways, fantasies and visual asides than one can shake a stick at). Simon Pegg's character is a sci fi fan who works in a comic shop. I counted three Buffy references during the course of the 14 episodes two of which are hilarious and shouldn't be missed!

I Robot was better than I expected and alluded to the zeroth law that Asimov came up with late in life. Still no similarity to the original Asimov story but worth watching imo

Dawn Dead was better than the Night of remake and filled with great opportunities to think, "well why didn't the idiots do this or that. It was bad in a good way and plenty gory, if you like that.

King Arthur was excellent but historically inaccurate as described below. Unlike DOTD the fun is in overlooking the flaws instead of finding them. I watched it twice.

Manchurian Candidate is a waste of time. It doesn't touch the original.

Spiderman 2 severely set back sequels. I just get sick of the angst.

COR-hard not to just turn it off.

I was recently pleasantly surprised by "Collateral". I didn't expect much going in, but was talked into watching it and enjoyed it a great deal. Great acting. Great cinematography.

"Ghost in the Shell 2 - Innocence". Wow. If you liked the first one (and I did), this is every bit as good. This is every bit the robot movie "I, Robot" isn't. But comparing these two is like comparing a diamond and a turd (I'm already banned from geek society for ragging on "The Matrix" so I don't need to do that anymore).

If you want something lighter - "Dodgeball". A lightweight, but a fun lightweight.

Saw Lemony Snicket's and thought it was terrific. Great performances and special effects. I'm planning on getting the DVD when it is released.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Along with watching the Firefly DVDs for what I believe was the sixteenth time, I also watched (for the second time) Richard Linklater's Before Sunset with Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. I love this film, along with the original Before Sunrise from 1994. Also watched Girl With a Pearl Earring with Scarlett Johanson and Colin Firth, and The Day the Earth Stood Still (although I haven't yet watched any of the supplementary materials. A little over a week ago I watched Adaptation.

In America - That movie made me weep like a tiny baby. Good stuff.

The Door in the Floor - The acting was fnatastic. The story was so full of subtext it became a little difficult to interpret. I was never quite sure of anybody's motivation, but the movie was still pretty good. Not for children at all.

Supersize Me - In case I was close to forgetting Fast Food Nation and going back to McDonald's, this movie came along to remind me of why I don't eat fast food. Plus, I'm never drinking soda again. Mission accomplished, Morgan Spurlock.

I saw Finding Neverland yesterday. It was excellent. Johnny Depp and the boy actor who played Peter (not Peter Pan) were excellent. The story was great. I don't care that it was made up. It seems very plausible that this is the way that Peter Pan was generated.

Garden State - loved it, had everything - comedy, drama, romance, angst and great acting from all involved (Zach Braff - who also wrote and directed, Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgard and many others).

Wicker Park (the American version) - much better than I thought it would be, but I can't say that I'm dying to see it again. Came to the conclusions that Josh Hartnett always plays the same character, and that Matthew Lillard's presence can make any movie better. A good movie to watch with other people so you can talk at the slow bits (of which there are many) and yell at the characters together.

I, Robot - I liked it, but I need to re-watch it when I'm not in a NyQuil induced haze (I missed the first 10-20 minutes)

Does "Dead Like ME" Season 1 count? Hehe. I bought it for the wife for Christmas and it pretty much kicked ass.

"Shrek 2" (It's Shrek part Deux..need I say more? hehehe) 5 stars hehe..

"What a Girl Wants" (Amanda Bynes, Colin Firth)
4 stars

"Love Actually" (A great chickflick if you can stand them)(Alan Rickman, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson and many more awesome folks). 5 Stars

"Bull Durham" (Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Kevin Costner..this is Hysterical) Baseball Comedy. 5 stars

"Riddick"- not as bad as I thought it was going to be. 4 stars

"Bourne Supremacy" - Matt Damon is an awesome actor and without him..this movie would've truly sucked ass. Other then that 3 stars

NEEDLESEYE

OK, this week, I saw Hero (or "Ying xiong") with Jet Li and Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tig...)which even though I slept through half of, was a very "beautiful" film. There's a scene between Snow and Moon "in red" which is really very cool. I noticed also that I still understood completely what was happening each time I'd lift my head up from my inadvertent napping. So, over the span of 2 minutes of snoozing every 10 minutes or so you might not miss much, but it is super visual art, with a nifty Chinese fable type of story with multiple point of view tellings to support it. So, I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. Don't watch it if you're sleepy though.

I then saw Reign of Fire.

I haven't much to say about it except I didn't realize Christian Bale was in it, and forgot that Matthew McConaughey was too. Oh boy, I guess the dragons probably looked neat in the theater.

I saw The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou on Tuesday. I very much enjoyed it, although I think Rushmore was a bit better. I would definitely recommend it if you're a Bill Murray or Wes Anderson fan, though.

EDIT: Duh, I forgot all about my Netflix movies. I also saw The Ladykillers (the original), The Breakfast Club, and Adaptation. They were all varying degrees of awesome.

Well, let's see ... haven't felt all that great this week so didn't see much. I did finally see "Dude, Where's my Car" which was pretty funny but I was extremely glad it was only a little over an hour long ... I don't think I could have stood it for any more. The gals who would answer "We're hot chicks" whenever questioned as to who they were got me snickering pretty hard each time they showed up.

"The Trouble with Harry" ... Shirley McClaine's first-ever movie from waaaaayyyyy back where a lot of folks end up dealing with Harry, who is dead. Hilarity ensues.

"Croupier" with Clive Owen. Quirky and funny, but definitely NOT something put out by Hollywood. Neat piece.

"The Knack and How to Get It"; a period-piece from the 'mod' or 'beat' days ... quite interesting and offbeat.

Oh, and I was home one morning and caught the new chat show, "Ellen." Well, maybe it is no longer new. Anyhow, it was pretty funny ... much better than I expected. :-)

And I caught the first episode of The Daily Show for post-Christmas ... beautiful! :-)

And the ever-favourite special of Canadians, "Rick Mercer's Talking to Americans," the funniest bits being the various profs at Harvard, Yale, and Columbia who agreed to sign petitions about banning the seal hunt in Saskatchewan.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse - I thought this film was brilliant and better than the first one. (I'm a big Resi fan)

Alien Vs Predator - Great film. Not as bad as everyone is making out it is. The alien/predator wrestling match is awesome.

Shaun of the Dead - Great comedy film.

This is Spinal Tap - Another great comedy film.

SHAMBLEAU

I saw "A Tale of Two Sisters" a few days ago. I'd heard it was a Korean entry in the Asian horror genre. That turned out to be true and not true. It's way more than just a fright-fest. It's not only creepy and intense, it's, by the end, moving and sad.

There are bits of "Ju-on" and "Ringu", sure. There are also influences from " Ginger Snaps" and "In the Company of Wolves", as far as the young adolescent girls/menstruation/horror connection. And maybe "Turn of the Screw" and "The Others" are in there a little, too.

But you have to add in "Mulholland Drive", "Repulsion", "Persona", "Donnie Darko", and every fairy-tale evil stepmother you've ever heard of, to get something like this movie. What a head trip! It's one of those movies you probably need to see twice to figure out what you just saw. Art house horror is not for everybody, but if you want something different, I highly recommend it.

COSMICFUGITIVE

I watched "Supersize me" on DvD rental this week.
Originally, I wasn't too keen on watching it, but I enjoyed it!

Not too sure if I want to go back to Maccy D's now after watching it...

Seriously though, it was an interesting movie. I felt sorry for the guy eating all that junk food in the name of an experiment. He was kinda crazy to want to go through it...

Overall, it was funny, insightful, educational and sometimes painful to watch...

A couple of nights ago I watched the 1979 PBS version of The Lathe of Heaven, starring Bruce Davison and Kevin Conway, and based on the novel by Ursula K. Le Guin. Even though the video quality was poor, it was a much better production than the A&E remake from a couple of years ago. It was a Netflix rental.

Other than that I have been watching some television shows on dvd or tapes that I made myself, including the original Battlestar Galactica series off Sci-Fi Channel (I've watched the first five hours so far), plus the animated series The Critic which I just purchased, and the first season of Alias from Netflix. I had not seen any of Alias before this.

MISGUIDED BY VOICES

Just got back from a sneak peak of Sideways (okay, I know its not new over the pond given it just picked up some Golden Globes, but its new here).

Fantastic - great writing, acting, directing and music. I came out of that film thirsty for a glass of wine, and I feel like I'm betraying Miles as the only thing I have in the house is

merlot!

If you get the chance, check it out - its a buddy movie that treats the audience like adults; funny and moving. Paul Giamatti should get the Oscar, though I'm quite sure its already marked out for Jamie Foxx (haven't seen Ray yet, but have to admit that on the form he showed in Collateral, he may deserve it).

Given time to settle into my list of great films, its aiming for a respectable slot in the top ten.

Predator - One of my favourite films ever.

Predator 2 - Not as good as the first one.

Aliens - Great film. Better than the other Alien films.

Starship Troopers - Yeah! I love this film. Kickass!

Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation - Disappointing sequel to an excellent film.

I had a batch of free screening passes fall in my lap the past two weeks... this is my '05 film tally so far:

Hotel Rwanda - Fantastic film about sanity and survival in the midst of hell on earth. Don Cheadle is amazing in this. I am bummed the Golden Globes all but ignored this important movie. Hopefully the Academy will right that wrong.

Elektra - Average comicbook-to-movie fare. Not great, not horrible. It does suffer from PG-13 limitations. Elektra should have been an R-rated film from the get go. I can tell already that the inevitable un-rated DVD version will be a much better film.

Assault on Precinct 13 - I remember enjoying it while I was watching it. However, the film evaporated from my mind as soon as I exited the cinema. I recall thinking Larry Fishburne could use some pilates. Oh, and I think there were some explosions.

A Very Long Engagement - This film is from the same director as Amelie and shares much of its romanticism. This film is also from the director who brought you Delicatessen and City of Lost Children and shares those films strange dark obsessions. In other words... A Very Long Engagement is brilliant and must be seen. Plus Audrey Tatou is the cutest human being on Earth-that-was-(almost).

I watched Million Dollar Baby, and it has been a long while since I have seen a film this good. Clint Eastwood, and Morgan Freeman are fantastic, and Hillary Swank was amazing. She deserves the Oscar for best actress. If you haven't seen it, then do yourself a favor, and check it out. I wont spoil anything, all I will say is that it's a powerful drama, emphesis on the powerful. It's not very often that films are this well crafted. Brilliant.

The Life Aquatic: A cute movie, with William Dafoe and Cate Blanchett in great supporting roles. By the way, did anyone notice that
three-legged dog scene????

Sideways: Wonderful guy-flick, and I think a good romance film for you ladies too.

DVD -
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Fantastic!! This movie is just great on so many levels, drama, romance, comedy, even sci-fi!!!!

Chronicles of Riddick: Nice action movie, but should have seen this on the big screen.
Spiderman 2: A great comic book movie that plays like a great romance. The scene at the end with Peter Parker finding Mary Jane in her wedding dress at his door hits too close to home.

For the kids: 1994 remake of Black Beauty. Surprisingly well done. My kids loved it, even made me get a little misty-eyed. For all the ladies, it has Sean Bean from LOTR.

Everyone dies alone.

I just saw The Jacket. It was much better than I thought it would be. It was somewhat dark and depressing, but had a hopeful undertone that shined in the ending. I plan on getting this on DVD. Very thought-provoking and well acted film.

Been watching the Sopranos. I'm on the second season. I couldn't believe what Tony's sister did to her fiance. That surprised me. Also, I spent most of the part where Uncle Jo's hand is stuck in the kitchen drain with my eyes closed because I was't sure where they were going to take that scene.
Was someone gonna turn on the disposal? AAACH!
I couldn't take it!
