has anyone seen this movie yet? apparently, it is based on a series of comic books. the premise sounds similar to angel (the whole redemption for past sins bit) but i do now know which one came first. can anyone help?

Actually, the redemption for past sins bit was created from whole cloth for the movie. I don't thinkg the source material, Hellblazer, bares much comparison to Angel other than the supernatural trappings they share.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

JADEHAND

I've seen it. It's decent, worth it. Unless you've actually read all the books he was in, you likely won't find too much to complain about. My only complaint was he should be smart enough to know if you're gonna slash wrists, it's up and down the length of the arm. once across the wrist is for quiters. but i digress. I believe Constantine was out a bit before Angel. But they aren't really that similar. Seeking redemption is about the only thing they have in common. John Constantine's Sin was Suicide. He went to hell for it as his religion of Catholicism states he would. Funny he didn't much care for it, and somehow managed to get back. Side effect of the trip, he now sees demons and angels walking the world among us. Now he spends his life casting out demons and other "good" deeds in an attempt to redeem himself before the Cancer gets him again, though he doesn't bother giving up the chain smoking.
That's a little over simplified and I'm sure someone who has read more of the Graphic Novels than I could clear up the details or correct me if I got something wrong.
Hope that helps a bit.

HELL'S KITTEN

Our dear boy, John Constantine, debuted back in 1985 and then got his own book in 1987, which is going strong at issue #204-ish. So, yeah, a bit before Angel.

Jadehand's synopsis of the movie is fairly accurate, from what I understand.

In other words, it's pretty much nothing like the actual Constantine or any of the story lines contained in Hellblazler. Except for the bit about cancer, which was really a brilliant story arc written by Garth Ennis. Canabalized and raped by Hollywood (heh, Reavers!), though, until there's nothing left of what makes it good.

Yep, I may be a tad biased because I'm a big, big fan of Hellblazer. Instead of boring you with another rant, you can see the other thread here:

Interesting. That actually sounds like the plot to the '90s sci-fi show "Brimstone," a show killed before its time.
A cop killed his wife's murder, and the devil gave him the chance to get out of Hell by retrieving a bunch of escaped souls.

Yeah, When is that one coming out on DVD? Loved Brimstone. Best Devil ever! John Glover was great, he's good as Lionel Luther on Smallville too. I'd love to see Brimstone on DVD. A Friend of mine recently loaned me a DVD set of the 8 episodes of Kindred: The Embraced. Funny I remember liking it a lot more when it was on, seems a bit silly now.

that was a pretty cool show. i forget exactly how many souls he had to capture. was it something like 113? it was not a round number, i remember that much. i always thought the "eyes are the window to the soul" thing was pretty neat too. i remember one episode when the hero almost got his eyes punched out too.

Yeah, Brimstone was brilliant. And was getting better and better... and then they cancelled it... sound familiar? I really hope it comes out on DVD sometime...

My thinking on Constantine is that it'll be better not to go in expecting anything like the comic. After all, Keanu Reeves is playing Constantine, and he's good but there's no way he could be the John Constantine from the comics.

Best just to think that it's another chap with the same name...

BLACKOUTNIGHTS

Hey Hell's Kitten,

I was a huge fan of the comics also. Particularly the early Swamp Thing appearances, but Garth Ennis' "Dangerous Habits" was a great arc. I've been out of comics for a while now thanks to the geniuses at Marvel screwing the industry. I'm basically only interested in graphic novels now. Just purchased "The Hedge Knight" a few months ago. I'd also like to finish out Gaiman's "Sandman", but I'm having a hard time finding those in harback.

I do, however, plan to pick up the Firefly comics along with their multi-variant covers. Just one of each though for my personal collection. I used to buy two, one to sell or trade and one to keep. I realize now that contributed to the downfall of comics. New purchases are a rare thing now. However, I'm not beyond picking up a good Silver Age (really want a copy of "Our Army at War" #151, or a lot of the books from the 70's and early to mid-80's.

Deep down I'm still a fanboy. It's too bad most of the comics just aren't that enjoyable anymore.
