Although not on the level of Firefly, Airwolfs' first season was kinda edgey for tv back then. I bought 'em from Columbia House, but a new, higher quality set are comin' through my door SOON!!
Any other browncoats out there have a fondness for the lady like I do? If so, you lookin' to upgrade also?
I figger it's somethin' to kick around 'till Serenity comes out, is all.

I was definitely a big fan of the show, back in the day.

I've been debating buying DVD sets of some of my favorite shows (original Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers (just got to meet Erin Grey!), Blake's 7,etc), but I've been a bit afraid that they just wouldn't live up to my memories of them.

It's funny how some shows aren't what they were to you as a kid. 6 million Dollar Man, Buck Rogers, Incredible Hulk, yes, Battlestar Galactica and more all suffer from the cheese factor- and charming as these shows might be, they can't live up to the memory of them.
Now Airwolf is a definite exception! In fact I enjoy it more now than when I was young due to its more adult execution than normal action tv fare. If seasons 2 and 3 were as good as season 1, I think it would be hailed as one of the best espionage/action series EVER!
So go ahead and at least get this one series (I assume you already own Firefly, nes pa?), you can't go wrong with season 1.
Any others that don't suffer the cheese factor?
I can't think of any right now...
uh-oh, copperheads, gotta go.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

You hit it right on the head Bleyddyn. I am afraid that old shows like Airwolf seen again as an adult would fail to live up to my memories of the show as a kid. I watched Buck Rogers on a Sci Fi marathon a few months ago and I couldn't help but think "I actually used to think this was a cool show?"

I might catch an episode of Airwolf if I see it on TV, but I think I will hold off on the DVD set.

Hey Chrisisall - although I'm sure it's not gonna be the way I remember it I still get a lot out of the old 80's TV shows - Nostalgia for a start. Then there's the actors whom may be more famous now, who suddenly make a guest appearance or something :)

I'll be buying this for sure - the Helicpoter alone is awesome and Alan Levi's theme tune is one of the best synthesizer theme's to come out of that era.

On a side note Buck Rogers Man I loved this show as a kid!! It was fantastic!! Back when I was a kid though my approach to it was so different.... I rememeber watching it thinking:

"Oh my god Buck is in real danger! Hawkman is gonna get him!!! I dunno if I can watch - look out Buck!"

Now though I'm like:

"Hey! When is Wilma gonna make another appearance in that dangerous outfit! Why we always concentrating on Buck and that stoopid robot?!"

Whoever was the costume designer for that show sure must have loved his work!

Ooooo, there's a name I haven't heard for awhile! *adds Airwolf to the list to buy*

But, when it comes to not living up to expectations, a little while back I picked up Sledge Hammer!. Man, I wasn't disappointed. So, when I get the funds, Airwold will be mine.

Crap, I already have the theme song stuck in my head!

Just watch out, after the first season you might want to go for the second, but be warned- 3 out of 4 shows were medeocre(at best). Maybe 5 or 6 good ones in the lot. (I'm a diehard fan, I'm gonna get season 2 anyway).
But even I'm not gonna touch season 3 !!!

Hey, now that I think of it, Buck Rogers had some of THE best female costumes I ever saw! And that evil princess that wanted Buck, holy s*@t, she was gorgeous! I was just in it for the chicks!
Just thought of another sci-fi/ action show that still holds up...The Prisoner. A definite product of the sixties, but a surprisingly low cheese factor.

uh-oh, Orange Alert, gotta blaze.

Yeah and some of those guest actors are amazing!!! But it always makes me laugh how when I was a kid I just wasn't aware of any of that!!!!

Ahh the loss of innocence eh?

Anyhoo Chrisisall man you and me I reckon we could sit through weeks of old TV show's together... The Prisoner is perhaps the best of any of those shows. It was recently shown here in it's entirety on some channel and they are still every bit as good! David Lynch has learned a thing or two from that show.

What show are you referring to here? A few shows have been mentioned in the thread already. Hope its not Blakes7.. I've been meaning to buy that because of fond childhood memories of it.

No, that was Airwolf.
From what I hear , Blakes 7 suffered no such degredation in quality.

Being about ten years older tha you, Somnambulist, I've sat through any and every thing from Twilight Zone, Outer Limits (old AND new versions), One Step Beyond, jeez, I don't have time to list em all right now...but Secret Agent (aka Danger Man-?)was cool, but the follow-up, The Prisoner, was the wildest show possibly ever made! So ahead of it's time, full of action, thought provoking. Only 17 episodes, yet it had the depth of a multi- season program. I still can't put into words all that I see in it! How much was in number 6's head? Did he know something he didn't know on a concious level? There are so many ways you could take it. Were we seeing what literally was happening or HIS experience in the Village? Only reasion I don't own em is cause I've practically MEMORIZED em I've seem em so many times.

Be seeing you.

Ohh maybe you can help me out here. I've watched a few Twilight Zones and I remember seeing one when I was really young, so my recall is a little off, but I seem to rememeber an episode where seven or eight people are confined in a cylindrical room with a very high wall, and they don't know how they got there? Anyway they do their utmost to get out, as they can see the sky above them, but they fail and finally succumb to fatigue. However for the final shot the camera lifts out of the room looking down on them and pans back into a street where we see that they are indeed inside a bin in the high street and people are just passing them by.

It freaked the hell out of me when I was kid, and I seem to remember this as being a Twilight Zone episode, but I have not subsequently seen it and I'm now wondering about my sanity as a youngster?!!! Does this episode ring any bells with you? Or was I just smoking the carpet??!?!

Best thing about the Prisoner is that Patrick Magowan refuses to explain the concept! Which I think is fantastic. On the reruns they had a discussion from all sorts involved in the show, friends family etc, and all have tried to have Patirck explain it. But he refuses.

But you're right, there are so many issues. Was he number one? Was he the all seeing overlord of the compound and therefore suffering form a 'God' like complex, testing his minions??? Or if not who is Number 1? Why the pennyfarthing bicycle? Who where all those people and why didn't they mind being there?

A friend and I were talking about older shows that we remember. It turns out all the shows we really liked got canceled too soon! Sound familiar? Anyway, the shows we talked about were:

Streethawk
Misfits of Science (still can't believe Courtney Cox was in that)
Nasty Boys (cool cop show with some big names)
Hardball
Automan
Manimal

Actually, they ran a Manimal marathon the other day. It was cool! LOL!

Hello All -

Long time lurker, first time poster, but reading this made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I clearly remember this episode! Very well done with a great twist (as usual for TZ) at the end.

So rest assured that you were not smoking the carpet!

Long time lurker, first time poster (what can I say, I'm shy like that!), but when I read this it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

Pheeeuw. :) Thanks JimTwilley

Allthough now I'm a little sorry I gave away the ending to a really good episode.

Glad you posted. This has been driving me crazy for years - all my chums who I mention this to look at me kinda sideways.

So with carpet in tact I shall forthwith recall this episode knowing it does exsist.... Mind you if I wasn't smoking the carpet that Rod Serling fella sure was :)

I didn't realise Misfits of Science was a show... How long did it run?

I remember Automan - how cheesy was that. I'd love to see a few of those again. TRON inspired wasn't it?

How about, whilst on the subject of cancelled shows; The Invaders The graphics alone on that show creeped me out!.. and it never officially had a finalé did it? That was a great Paranoia show.
