I don't think there has been a movie that spoke to my inner smart ass quite like Army of Darkness did. As I've mentioned before on this site, my college roommates and me each had a trilogy up on the kitchen counter out for display. One had The Star Wars trilogy...the other had The Godfather Tilogy, and mine...Evil Dead.

I remember driving to see this movie with my little brother asleep in the back, my best friend clinging for dear life in the front seat, and me driving 120mph while it was snowing to get to this movie on time...And I had a ball, even if the version I saw at the theater was not the version that turned up on video later.

Short answer...yes, but it remains a guilty pleasure to "cinephiles" and film students who probably don't like to mention that they love it.

REGINAROADIE

Maybe not THE definitive enjoyable film, but definitly something to keep on the DVD shelf to look at for a chuckle or a thrill. I still laugh my ass off when he's choosing one of the three different books. My favorite one is when the book bites down on him and acts like a rabid animal.

And the whole first part with the Evil Ash was great. "Good, bad. I'm the guy with the gun."; "Say, what's that on your face?" And it's one of the few times where the studio ending was better than the actual one. The whole scene in the S-Mart was a great action capper. And it has two classic exchanges.

"Ma'am, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask you to leave the store."
"WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?"
"Name's Ash. (loads shotgun) Housewares."

"I'll swallow your soul."
"Come get some."

And of course one of the best curtain lines in a movie. "Hail to the king, baby."

You know, I always thought that it would be so cool and funny to see Bruce Campbell as Aragon in the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy as opposed to Viggo Mortenson. I mean, he is qualified. Orcs are just the same as dead-ites. And it would be a geek climax for him to take Liv Tyler in his arms and say softly "Aaye ana i harni, lapse." Which is elvish for "Hail to the kind, baby."

Actually, Bruce is one of those actors who you think should be in everything. Even if it's a small pop-up bit like in the Spider-Man flicks. He just has that presence that draws people to movies just to see that one actor and is usually the thing they talk about the most. If FIREFLY were still on the air, it would've been great to see him do a guest spot on it.

The theatrical version is the best! Best lines, best ending. The other versions have cool additions and extentions, but the first version I saw is the funniest!
*I have a Japanese version on tape of the directors cut with the theatrical ending minus most of the 'Gulliver' scene, wierd, huh?

As much as I love Army of Darkness, I would have to say that it is not even the most enjoyable movie in its own series - that honor would have to go to Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn.

I guess that would make Army of Darkness the second most enjoyable movie of the 20th Century.

I have met Bruce Campbell twice. The first time, I was an extra on Lois and Clark, and I played one of his entourage of lawyers. The second was at a signing of his book. He's the nicest, coolest guy you could possible imagine, and so grateful to all his fans.

Dean Cain was very cool as well. There wasn't a lot of joking around between them, as it was a large scene with lots of extras, but the overall mood was very relaxed and casual. Bruce started out inside the courthouse and exited with his team of lawyers, of which I was one. Before the scene started, Bruce turned to us all and said, "Hi, I'm Bruce" and shook our hands, asking our names. Not many actors would take the time to do that.

I am still in the business - I produce commercials for a company called ka-chew. I still act on occasion - I did voice work for a movie called "Racing Stripes" last year, and am currently rehearsing for a play.

But I've never been in a Troma film - my hat is off to you!

I loved "If Chins Could Kill" too! I don't know why, but the caption for the picture of the Raimi Oldsmobile (I think it was "This damn car has been in more movies than I have!") made me laugh and laugh...then, days later, I'd be thinking about it, and start laughing again.

Sweet! I leave for a few days and, upon my return, find a bustling thread about the great Bruce Campbell! You guys rock!

AOD: That little "Yeah" after Ash first fires the shotgun to shut everyone up. It's the little things that make movies for me - that puts AOD ahead of the first two Evil Deads - although they're fantastic flicks.

Bubba Ho-tep - I can't even think about that movie without cracking up. I think I enjoyed Ossie Davis as JFK almost as much as Bruce's Elvis.

Oh my god, I forgot about that car! My Grandma had that exact same one! Yellow 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with white vinyl top, brown vinyl interior, named Yellow Bird. She used to take me to the local swimming pool in it and after I was finished swimming I'd almost get 2nd degree burns when I sat down on those seats. All that glass plus an hour under the noon Phoenix sun = friggin' HOT!

She sold it about 11 years ago. Maybe I should tell her that her Yellow Bird is a movie star.

On a more recent note, at my job, there is a 20 LB sledgehammer with the words "BOOMSTICK" written on the handle.

Army of Darkness is the movie that I reach for when I want to just turn my brain off and sit down and laugh out loud. It is filled with gags, blood, and the best evil twin seen in a movie in a long time.
I'm happy that Hollywood has finally seen the talent that Sam is and given him a chance to put his visions on the big screen with a more marketable character and backing him up with plenty of advertising.

I remember once in college, after like the tenth drunken viewing of the whole trilogy, one of my roommates looked at me, and said..."Why do we do this!"

I was about to curse, but I couldn't...The part in Evil Dead where the girl's brain (Covertly disguised as oatmeal...I always thought it was creamed corn until I listened to the commentary...) was leaking out...All I said was "Look at that!"

And, that was the end of any protest about the Evil Dead Trilogy...My only problem was having everyone watch the rest of the before AOD. So, I usually watched Evil Dead early on...No one had any problems watching the second one, and there would be an assload of people around for AOD... And anyone bad mouthing it was forced out.
