Blackthorne To Play Dresden

SCI FI Channel has cast Paul Blackthorne (24) as Chicago-based wizard and detective Harry Dresden in its upcoming TV movie The Dresden Files. David Carson (Star Trek: Generations) has been tapped to direct the two-hour backdoor pilot, which will commence production in Toronto later this month, with plans for a summer 2006 premiere, the network said. Blackthorne is perhaps best known as the villainous Stephen Saunders on Fox's 24.

The Dresden Files is based on the best-selling series of novels by Jim Butcher. It is being produced by Lions Gate Television, in association with Nicolas Cage's Saturn Films. Hans Beimler (Profiler) and Robert Wolfe (The 4400) will serve as executive producers alongside Cage, his Saturn Films partner, Norm Golightly, and Morgan Gendel. Beimler and Wolfe wrote the script.

The Dresden Files centers on Dresden, a private eye with extraordinary abilities. Where others see typical crimes of assault, kidnapping and murder, he sees otherworldly forces at work...

Thoughts on this?

FLECHETTE

Looking forward to it.

Robert Hewitt Wolfe is working on this and the author Jim Butcher seems pretty happy with things so far and has realistic understanding that TV adapts a novel not copies word for word.

I do worry about special effects - which tends to be SciFi downfall (imho) but a solid tale can rise above it

Paul Blackthorne looks the part of Harry and I've enjoyed his work in the past.

Overall one of the better things to look forward too.

HAKEN

Likes to mess with stuffs.

I've been looking for another series that is as consistenly good as Firefly to build a site and community around, but haven't found one yet.

I considered The Dresden Files when the movie was first announced, but I think it'll be difficult. There are just too many unknowns right now and the movie can easily end up looking like a B-movie. Now, had James Marsters played the lead, that might be a different story.

CYBERSNARK

OTOH, Robert Hewitt Wolfe comes close to Joss' level of talent.

Nice to know there are other Harry Dresden fans out there. Yes, I'm really looking forward to the next book and to the tv movie. We may have to suspend belief for some of the casting (sounds like the Murphy and Susan casting should have been reversed!) but it does sound from what I've read that Bob and Mister are perfect. And yes, totally bummed about the "no James" factor. Although, he is kinda short, and Harry is very, very tall. Still, James would have been great.
