I should say right off the bat that I'm not a rabid Star Wars purist. I watched the new trilogy with increasing enjoyment from I (fairly crummy) to III (quite good). So today my wife and I decided to start a new run through the series from I to VI.

I was bitching about Jar Jar (much to the irritation of my wife), and finally just started skipping past any scene that had any Jar Jar stuff in it. To my surprise, it became a much better movie!

Which reminded me that waaaaaaaay back in the late '90s there was a thing called The Phantom Edit, that cut out the more ridiculous elements and left what was generally acclaimed as a vastly superior film.

So basically I'm hoping that somebody on this board has a copy of The Phantom Edit. Now, just in case there are Lucasfilm spies around these boards, I'm not offering to pay for copy (thereby making someone a profit). I would however, pay for a disk and shipping. So if you have a copy (or know where else I might poke about looking for one) let me know!

I don't know about this Phantom Edit, but I do know that every time I watch Episode II I skip most of the parts without Obi-wan in it after he and Anakin split up, I keep this up til about the part where Anakin and Padme go to Genosha and I've found it a much better movie. Thats just my opinion though. Good luck on finding the Phantom Edit.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

I'm also quite interested in seeing this Phantom Edit which I heard about a few years ago.
Each time I watch the movie, I like it less and less - Jar Jar didn't bother me that much, at least not as much as young Anakin going "weeeeeee!!!" and "I'll try spinning, that's a neat trick"
*sigh*

As for episode 2, I hate the dialogue between Anakin and Padme too - their "romantic scenes" are laughable. And it's not the acting (I like both of them as actors), its the way its been written.
I've put up with the young Anakin scenes in episode one though, so these scenes in clones are bearable

I agree so much.

Don't get me wrong, I dislike Jar-Jar as much as all others, but compared to young Annie I thought Jar-Jar was the greatest character ever created. That's how much little Anakin made me want to bash my head into a wall.

Never heard of it. I'm a Star Wars fan why would i want to watch syndicated versions of the movies???? Ok you don't like Jar Jar, however to remove him from movies is just like removing Boba Fett. How can a syndicated version be a better movie???? Why would cutting chunks out of the movie make it a better movie???? You complain about phantom, clones and Sith, however they aint so bad, Jedi has muppets in it. To me, out of all 6 films, jedi is bottom. Best thing about Jedi is the Skiff fight near the begining. Awesome. SO as a STar Wars fan I don't rate Jedi and rate phantom higher. Does that make me bad? The Phantom Edit my backside. I am almost annoyed by that

it was bad-ass, i'll give you that. but episode three had the best lightsabre fight. the final Obi-Wan vs Anakin. seriously, no contest.

So true. In fact, I'll admit to actually finding some bits with Jar Jar funny... well, at first at least.

As for the Jedi/Prequels debate.
I'm gonna go out there and say, for me, Jedi was THE best Star Wars movie.
I liked the ewoks - so what?
And the lightsabre fight between Luke and Darth?
Sure the prequels fights were cooler, but this battle between father and son was by far the best, in terms of actually moving me. And John Williams' music during that battle? Fantastic!

Same here, I'm a long-time STAR WARS fan too - and I loved all 6 films (also love the EU and the Clone Wars cartoons) and I gotta say, Jar jar really isn't that bad. Sure, Lucas can't write dialogue, but neither could Tolkien (IMHO) and he's considered a great writer by many (myself included). I also would find the Phantom Edit to be something that in my mind would ruin the film.

I may be first and foremost a Browncoat, but it's not the only 'verse that owns a piece of my heart...

You can't have it both ways, either you like Muppets or your don't like Yoda.

Yoda was more like a Muppet than any non-Yoda character in Jedi. There is one possible exception, by I like to think of him as Jaba's left foot since Jaba didn't have one of his own, and even if we count him he is certainly no more Muppet-like than Yoda.

Personally I don't like Muppets anywhere outside of Star Wars, but Yoda showed me that they did have their place.

I grew up with Star Wars. My mother even tells a story that she was pregnant with me when she saw Episode IV and I was kicking to the beat of the Imperial March. So in a way I can say I was a SW fan before I was even born!

But I have to admit I think Episodes I and II are pretty terrible. Jar-Jar is definitely one of the most annoying characters ever created. Little Anakin? Gah. And the pod racing in the first film was totally put in just to have a reason to create a video game of the same.

The only redeeming quality of Episodes I and II in my opinion are the scenes with Obi-Wan, but I may be a bit biased since he's my favorite character. In fact, sometimes I wonder how much better the films would have been if they'd have focused more on Obi-Wan and his personal struggles and less on Anakin and his cheesy romance and midichlorians. But again, that's just me.

Also, I have to agree with Needy: the Episode VI lightsaber fight was much more emotionally moving than any of the "wow, look how fast yoda can spin" lightsaber duels in Eps I-III. Also, Return of the Jedi is my favorite film. Luke is so badass in it. The Ewoks? Squeaky and sometimes too cute, but handy in a fight. And they don't say crap like "Meesa bursting with happiness to see you!"

Anyway, to get to the point, I haven't seen The Phantom Edit, but I bet it's pretty darn cool. Casual, have you checked on any Star Wars fansites, or just done a search? If you do see it, let us know how it is!

Well I was expecting a backlash as soon as I typed "I like the ewoks" - stuff like how a few teddy bears beat up the empire when nobody else could, and that they were ridiculous - just another way to draw kiddies in and buy toys

Kelly - I think Episode 1 is easily the weakest of the bunch but, with an exception of the clunky dialogue and "romance" scenes, I thought Episode 2 was really great.
It had an interesting story, some powerful foregleams into Anakin's darkside and lots of Natalie Portman in skimpy wear.
Maybe someone should edit Episode 2 - cutting out some of the scenes between padme and anakin.

Incidently, everybody seriously needs to check out "Tag & Bink: Revenge of the Clone Menace" by Dark Horse Comics.
It's a tale set within the Star Wars universe during the events of episode 2, and it completely makes fun of the movie, with a lot of injokes too.
It's the second in a 2 part issue - the first dealt with Tag and Bink's involvement in events during Return of the Jedi.

You can preview the comic here http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/preview.php?theid=13-692 (just click on the pic) though the comic really gets funny later on as the pair of Jedi padawans attempt to help Anakin woo Padme - so you'll just have to buy the damn thing. It's a worthy purchase even if you're not a big comic book reader - you just need to have seen the star wars movies to appreciate it

I thought I was the only one who liked the Ewoks!

And yes: Tag and Bink are vital material. I especially loved the Jay & Silent Bob cameos. And the fact that Palpatine & Anakin were watching Finding Nemo. And Lucas in Dex's diner with the camera. And how Tag (or was it Bink?) explained the Jedi Council's sending Anakin with Padmé ("Even we're not that stupid!")

That would've been quite a feat, considering that the Imperial March wasn't in ANH (it was composed for ESB). ANH had what I call the "Rebel March" --the awards ceremony music that was a spruced-up version of the Rebel Alliance theme.

When I envisioned the prequels I had always assumed Anakin would be a teenager when he and Obi-Wan first met. After seeing TPM I was convinced this was definitely the way to go. Having him start as a teen with raging hormones and the emotional instability of adolesence is a great vehicle for his descent towards the dark side. Of course we did get a glimpse of that in Episode II. On the more practical side it was just too much to ask such a young child to carry a movie with the anticipation of Episode I.

As far as Attack of the Clones is concerned I remember hearing Lucas talk about how it would be primarily a romance. I was just dumb enough not to believe him. Some of that dialogue still makes me squirm. Though one of the best scenes is when Anakin confesses what happened with the Sand People.

I'd like to touch on a few other things as well. First, my favorite duel is still the one from The Empire Strikes Back. Second, I still can't stand Ewoks and skip past those scenes to this day. The whole concept of teddy bears defeating what the Emperor refers to as 'a legion of my best troops' has never sat right with me. The Empire loses all credibility at this point.

Not as sad as me for getting it wrong! Of course, I was in utero, so that's my excuse! I need to watch ANH again and/or ask my mother to clarify.

Edit: I have no problems with the Ewoks defeating some of the best troops Vader had. Often the littlest people, the minorities, are the ones overlooked, but that doesn't mean they are powerless. Kinda like in Lord of the Rings: "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future."

Me neither, the Ewoks were cool, and I loved how the highly technological Empire was defeated by a primitive tribes-people that they would have otherwise overlooked as beneath them. It kinda makes me think of the dangers of an over-reliance on technology (or reliance on technology vs creative ingenuity). Same as in the film ALIENS - the Marines go charging in, gloating about all the arsenal of weapons and tech that they have, and yet in their first encounter they suffer alarmingly heavy losses.

Both the aliens and the ewoks knew their surroundings better than their enemies, and in the case of the Empire and the Marines they foolishly assumed their opponents were either unworthy, or were just animals, and they paid the price for that.

hmm, I tend to ramble on don't I? lol

That's the one of the most common themes in all sci-fi. The low tech ones always win. In real life we see this in things like the Vietnam War or people shoving a plane into a building. In Sci-fi we see it in Star Wars (Luke with his bashed and obsolete R2 and without a targeting system beating the best tech of the entire Empire), Jedi, and of course Aliens.

In any Science Fiction show that does not include a holocaust the ones without technology will always triumph over the ones that have it. That’s part of what sets Firefly apart, in any other sci-fi the Browncoats would have won for two reasons:
1 They were outnumbered.
2 Their technology was worse than that of their opponents.

Of course there is some truth to the idea that you can defeat the emperor’s best without any technology to speak of. The entire shield facility the Ewoks took could have been destroyed with a ten-pound bag of flower, a fan, and a single spark.

Actually it always struck me as absurd how much equipment the rebels brought on the job, aren’t they supposed to be constantly on the run and squeezed for resources?

Exactly:
Before encounter:
Hudson: I'm ready, man, check it out. I am the ultimate badass! State of the badass art! You do NOT want to fuck with me. Check it out! Hey Ripley, don't worry. Me and my squad of ultimate badasses will protect you! Check it out! Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Whoa! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got tactical smart missiles, phase-plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks...

Then they meet a group of unarmed enemies with no military training who were, I repeat, UNARMED.

Hudson: You maybe haven't been keeping up on current events but we just got our asses kicked, pal!

A little bit later after a single primitve took out the most advanced bit of military technology they had on hand:

Hudson: Well that's great, that's just fuckin' great man. Now what the fuck are we supposed to do? We're in some real pretty shit now man... That's it man, game over man, game over! What the fuck are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?
It goes on of course:
Hudson: *Seventeen days?* Hey man, I don't wanna rain on your parade, but we're not gonna last seventeen hours!

Aliens rarely gets criticized because a group of unarmed primitives takes out the marines, why? The Ewoks were a hell of a lot better armed and had higher numbers. So why do people attack one but not the other? The only thing I can think of is that the aliens are cute, and the Ewoks look like the type of animal responsible for some of the worst maulings imaginable.

-

Ignoring other movies for a moment though:

There are a lot of areas where I can see someone claiming Star Wars was unrealistic, and there are a lot of faults I can see in the Ewoks.

However what had to be the most realistic moment in the Star Wars trilogy, or pair of trilogies for that matter, is when the Ewoks beat the empire. I mean watch the first Star Wars again, just pop in A New Hope. Are you honestly telling me that you don’t think the Ewok’s could repel the boarding force. The interpersonal weapons in Star Wars are the least effective I have ever seen in fiction or real life. An AK-47 would have turned the tide of any on-foot battle in the show, and a large supply of prepared rocks would serve you far better than the guns of the show.

Acid blood isn't exactly a huge offensive weapon.

As for the rest you are correct in that their natural assets were more than those of a person BUT the Ewoks were armed with weapons (that they themselves had fashioned) which were more deadly than claws or tails. And the ability to smash skulls (which by the way did not appear in the movie Aliens) pales in comparison to the destructive force the Ewoks brought to bear.

Would the Ewoks beat the Aliens? Hell no. But the odds of Aliens vs. Colonial Marinas are about equal to those of Ewoks versus Imperials. The outcome should have been, and indeed was, the same.

very true

Hmm, still think given the aliens speed, stealth and deadliness that they're just as lethal (if not more) than the Ewoks (IMHO only)

But did appear in alien, and was suggested in ALIENS (again IMHO) so clearly a trait of the species.

Hmm, yes, agree with you I will.

Yeah, have to say you made some pretty interesting points, and ultimately I'd have to agree with your conclusion - outcome the same. (plus let's not forget those Imps have terrible vision problems in those helmets - even walking through doors is a problem for some...)

No argument there, the Ewoks lack the three most important assets of the Aliens:
Stealth
Speed
Coolness

I mean I can imagine the Aliens giving people nightmares, Ewoks ... not so much.

Also a single Ewok couldn’t take out a whole crew in under 24 hours. And finally, if the Ewoks had destroyed the colony in Aliens newt wouldn’t have been hiding, she’d have been kicking ass.

I can see it now, in documentary form, some narrator talking over it, have the Ewok dragged away, cut to a scientist describing the Alien lifecycle, cut back to the Ewok convulsing.

End the movie with the documentary crew getting taken by the Aliens.

This whole Aliens/Ewoks comparison seems a bit ridiculous to me. There are two things these situations have in common:

1. Neither species has technology.

2. Both are in an environment which is familiar and favorable to them.

Just to add on to what SimonB said about the aliens natural abilities. Don't forget that normal ammo bounces off their bodies. Remember the scene with Lieutenant Dipshit and Vasquez near the end? It appears that nothing short of explosive rounds or some super powered gun like the ones Drake and Vasquez had can actually harm them. Unless you count what Hicks did with his shotgun. The aliens are also strong enough to lift a man then carry him off. An Ewok's best bet is to get about ten of his buddies, surround a few troopers, and pummel him with stones.

This destructive force you speak of, would that be the sticks and rocks they were throwing, or the logs rolling down the side of a hill. Give me a break.

Are there some similarites to what occured in both movies? Yes. The marines and imperials both vastly underestimated what they were up against. The biggest difference is that the aliens are basicly biological killing machines were the Ewoks are as you said primitives who need to shape weapons in order to fight. Oh and let's not forget the clever booby-traps they set, those were top notch.

Finally, I really like they whole Ewoks vs. Aliens idea. I would pay big to see that one. Can you imagine what kind of creature would be created if an Ewok were impregnated by one of those face suckers? Truly horrifying that would be. This gives rise to another fantastic idea. Imagine if in Episode II Anakin's mother had been killed by Ewoks. Again I would pay big to see someone go dark side on a village full of those furry bastards.

Jedi is the weakest of the original trilogy I would agree but it still is better than any of the prequels.

Don't get me wrong I love the prequels especially II and III, people think Im crazy because I do, but the original trilogy rocks

I love Jedi, especially the scene with Vader and Luke just before he takes him to the Emperor and then the battle between them with the Emperor chiding them on.

"We are quite safe from your pitiful little band!"

Seriously, Episode I is the worst SW movie ever. It had a 20 minute racing scene which contributing nothing to plot, character development, or atmosphere and was basically a very long video game advertisement for the podracing games.

There's always Star Wars Battlefront - you can kill ewoks AND gungans in that... even if they're on your side (though they won't like it much)

Btw, I knew mentioning that I like the ewoks would spark a debate

So true. In fact I skip the scene now (and I never normally skip scenes... ever).
Its like when you're watching someoen play a video racing game. You might get some fun watching for a minute or two, but then it's like "enough! Either let me have a go or turn it off!"

Not me, I agree with you - I love all 6 myself. Though I don't have a problem with the pod-racing scene. I really kinda like it personally. But I can understand the criticism being thrown at it.

Now, if you'll excuse me - I've just stumbled blearly out of the dance partay thread, covered in writing and with my eyebrows missing (loooong story), so I'm gonna go have a nice juicy Ewok steak sandwich and then get some sleep....

It's pretty hard to find now. I don't know if you can get it online. You'd probably have to search a lot. I have seen copies for sale at conventions such as Dragon*Con but I've never picked up a copy as I'm fine with the way movie is. It's like people think hating Jar Jar Binks is the cool thing to do. He is one of my least favorite characters but he's not hate-able. If you wanna see the most annoying, crappiest characters from a movie then see Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. There's a character called Dobby and a ghost called Moaning Myrtle. They'll make you want to hurt yourself.

I personally think episode III was the best of all six. But thats just because I didn't see any of the originals until I was used to seeing CGI stuff and awsomely choreographed stunts and fights.

You're welcome on my boat. God ain't.

The Pod Race is awesome. I just wish george would have left the other 2 laps in it. Watch the cut scenes and the Pod Race goes on for about another 10 minutes :). I love Liam Neason in Menace he is 1 of the coolest Jedi ever. OK Samuel L Jackson is cool as well 'Mother fuckin Jediii!' LOL. In order of personal preferance my star wars films are in this order:

1: A New Hope
2: Phantom Menace
3: Empire Strikes Back
4: Sith
5: Clones
6: Jedi

I know a majority of people like Empire as their fave however I personally feel, other than the Battle of Hoth, nothing happens.

Not true, not a singe bullet that hit them failed to do damage. In the scene with Vasquez and Gorman (or Dipshit if you perfer) she took out two with a pistol.

As for the rest of your points, I don't really disagree, except that the Ewoks can, alien for teddybear, cause more intentional damage if you give them a moment to set up. (Unless you think the Aliens purposefully nuked themselves out of existence.)

Okay, I do remember that Vasquez pinned one of the alien's head down with her foot and then proceeded to dispatch it with several shots to the head. Point conceded, but remember before that Gorman shot at one from further away and the bullets looked to bounce off without doing any damage. I believe there were sparks as said bullets impacted the alien's head.

Damn, we totally hijacked this thread! My first one ever, dare I say yippee!

Wow, would you look at that.
If you reverse that list you made, you've pretty much got my order of preference (though new hope would be in the middle somewhere, not the bottom)
