CYBERSNARK

These were first published yesterday by TFW2005, but their server nearly went kerplooie and they've closed off all outside access. These are mirrored by esrz22 of the Allspark forums.

Design sketch for Optimus Prime. Yes, I see the flames.

Design sketch for "Blackout" (ignore the "Incinerator" nametag, they've been using decoy/non-final names):

Blackout's toy prototype:

Toy prototype for Starscream. Yes, Starscream.

Scorponok. Can't tell if this is a toy proto or CGI. I'm guessing CGI, used to design the toy's gimmick. It's just too detailed.

There's also a pic of a practical mockup for Bumblebee, but It's been dismissed as an incomplete pre-viz (just something they can set up on-set for the actors to establish scale), so I'm not gonna post it here.

Here's a discusion thread over on the Allspark.

And here's Michael Bay's third-hand commentary.

The fandom seems pretty evenly divided about these. Some people love them and think they're the greatest thing to happen to TFs since Beast Wars, and others think they're abominations and the people involved with making them should be banned from ever working anywhere again. Not really any middle ground.

Personally, while I can't say I'm in love with the new style (way too busy and overly-detailed), I can kinda understand the logic behind it; Decepticons are war machines, and would optimize themselves for the most effective combat tactics (reverse-articulated legs for running and jumping, talons instead of hands, faces that look like things conjured from Hell, etc). Autobots would be more diplomatic and general-purpose in their choice of robot modes (humanoid, sleek and agile, human-like faces, etc).

I just wish Bay/ILM hadn't felt the need to go all cliche on us. The bad guys don't need to be monstrous to be scary --they can carry that off in facial expression and personality (note Joss' comment about making humans scarier than anything you can put in latex. That also applies to CGI). Unfortunately, Bay seems to be of the mind that "writing" is basically stringing the action scenes together. He's promised that it'll be like all of the action scenes of his previous movies all rolled into one. Which probably means that we won't actually see anything more than random strobes and flashes of colour, punctuated by ever-larger explosions.

He's also "assured" us that the action scenes will be bigger than the dialogue (namely that five pages of dialogue can fly by like nothing, and a two-line action sequence can be much bigger and more spectacular than it seems).

Also, the movie designs are obviously just ILM showing off how intricate and detailed their mecha can be. They aren't remotely practical (no armour, no covering, just fully exposed pistons, wires, and gears). I'm keeping my expectations low, hoping for a half-decent "giant alien robots" movie (which is not in any way to be confused with a "Transformers" movie).

I agree about Starscream. He looks like he'll be a great little toy, he just doesn't look anything remotely like Starscream.

Too bulky and powerful. He looks like a serious brawler --Starscream is more of a "sidle up beside you with a smile and slip a shiv into your back."

(And he does have claws; it looks like the missile launchers can fold back so he can bring his graspers into play.)

That said, he'd make a great upgrade for Landbullet (or Crumplezone as he's called in NorAm).

Ok, I like Blackout's prototype.

Starscream is okay except for the total lack of hands.

I would like to see a prototype of Optimus. The CGI they did of him is not inspiring much confidence that they will do the big guy justice.

Blackout is made of solid awesomeness. As observed on TFW2005 before they locked up:

Blackout is a star.

He's got a movie coming out, he's surrounded by controversy, he's in talks for a new series, and he's recently been spotted snuggling with Lindsey Lohan.

UPDATE:

We have a Megatron:

This may be the worst of the bunch. He's just so generic. No bigass cannon, no alt-mode kibble (his alt mode is that Cybertronian jet in the first pic), not even any colour.

He needs some flourishes.

Yeah. I think it's the lack of kibble that does it (and the monochrome look doesn't help either).

Really, every incarnation of Megatron has had some distinctive feature that sets him apart and serves as an immediate visual shorthand.

G1: Big honking gun on one arm, mullet-shaped helmet.
G2: Heavy camo-pattern plate armour, huge artillery piece on shoulder.
Beast Wars: T-Rex head-cannon and tail/cyber-T-Rex tail-cannon/dragon head cannon and gold wings.
Beast Machines: Vorlon-style control harness, disembodied & possessing various hosts.
RiD: 10-changer, featuring great violet bat-wings
Armada: tank treads on shoulders, hip-slung minigun-style cannon.
Energon: shoulder-cannons, wings, hand-held tank (!!!).
Cybertron: Unicron's armour, spikes in useful places (knees, elbows, forearms, shoulders), pompadour-shaped helmet, Batmobile alt-mode.

Not really a "design" per se, but I'll throw it in here to avoid another thread:

http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/728/728564p1.html
(contains traces of spoilers)

This confirms the vehicle modes for all the Autobots (as of what appears to be the climactic battle):

Bumblebee: yellow/black Camaro.
Ironhide: souped-up GMC 4X4 truck.
Ratchet: emergency-rescue vehicle, "modified humvee."
Jazz: Pontiac Solstice.

We know from set photos that Bumblebee will likely reformat(*) mid-movie from a beat-up '70s Camaro to the glossy 2007 model. Optimus, as we saw earlier, is a flaming truck.

Thus far, the Decepticons are:

Megatron: Cybertronian jet/possible reformatting towards the end.
Starscream: Earth jet (exact model unconfirmed, rumoured to be a JSF).
Brawl: ???
Bonecrusher: A minesweeper vehicle (I saw pictures of what must be him a few months back, I'll hunt them down momentarily).
Barricade: Police car.
Blackout: Pave Low helicopter (you met him earlier).
Scorpinok: Unknown alt-mode, rumoured to be non-humanoid (from ???-to-scorpion), or at least not to transform in the film (???->scorpion->robot)
Frenzy: ???

Soundwave (a.k.a. "the guy with the cool voice") won't be seen, but will likely appear in a sequel. Further data is unclear due to glaring grammatical incompetence.

My favourite part:
Quote:

Jazz is a curvy silver coupe, the latest Pontiac Solstice. It seemed like one guy's entire job was to buff the car and make sure it remained shiny during the carnage.
That's Jazz alright.

Do it with style or don't bother doin' it.

(* "reformatting" is what it's called when TFs adopt a new alt-mode/body.)

EDIT: Pics of Barricade, Bonecrusher, and Bumblebee's alt-modes: http://www.jbfans.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=778&sid=c03e3bb2f3d487a01

Not sure I like Optimus truck design too much, guess I could live with it. But, Megatron looks lousy. I hate when they alter a character too much. Where's his cannon and what's with the face?

WT is going on with Bumblebee? I thought he was a little subcompact, the new one looks like a musclecar.

This looks like it's going to be a wait to video.

One point I might make on Megatron. Actually more a hope than a point. I'm hoping that the image here is not the final textured version. Tecturing a cgi model is just as hard as modelling it, and you often use simple test textures in the early stages while modelling is incomplete. You wouldn't want to waste the texturers time and make him/ her redo the whole job.

I'm hoping this monochromatic shiny peice of crap is an unfinished version like the monochromatic global illumination renders of Blackout's toy prototype.

Well, the original Bumblebee was a superdeformed VW beetle (despite how it looked on the show, it wasn't a realistically-proportioned one). The fact that it was chibi was the only reason it could be produced --they didn't need VW's permission.

See, VW refuses to allow their name/image to be associated with war (which is both ironic and understandable given their history), and TFs is essentially a war story, so Bumblebee can never officially return to his roots.

Also, in the last three series, the "Bumblebee-type character" has been called Hot Shot (actually, he's kind of a cross between Bumblebee and Hot Rod --the token young, brash, audience-identification character), and has consistently been a sports car.

At least there's a logical progression to it.

And Bumblebee sees you:

Today (well, late yesterday, but I'm just seeing it now) is our first glimpse of the Bee's face:

(Courtesy of HOOKS over at the Allspark.)

This is from the physical model, which other sources have told us "isn't complete" (i.e., it's an on-set stand-in, lacking final detail). I'm hoping for some kind of CG mask over the mouth area. The eyes and forehead Autobrand are perfect, though.

UPDATE: Writer Roberto Orci has confirmed that all TF faces will have some CG elements overlaying the actual on-set model.

Also yesterday, a few new on-set pics popped up on LatinoReview:
Here's upgraded Bumblebee.

See that ginormous black truck in the background? Well, he's Ironhide.

And here's Jazz, hanging out with some "Section 7" peeps (Section 7 being the US government agency tasked with "handling" the Transformers. 'Cause, y'know, US = the entire world ).

And finally, here's Ratchet, hiding from the paparazzi with Bumblebee.

We also got a size comparison of the robot modes:
Jazz : 13 feet tall
Bumblebee: 17 feet tall
Ratchet: 24 feet tall
Iron Hide: 26 feet tall
Optimus Prime: 28 feet tall
Megatron: 34 feet tall

Yes, Bumblebee's not the shortest! Woohoo! Take that, Jazz!

*ahem*
Sorry. Fellow short-guy sympathy happening.

A new image of Optimus Prime has appeared, showing a more advanced design (which gels with earlier reports that the leaked designs are very early work). The differences are subtle, but they are there:

And one lucky geek managed to catch a glimpse of a highway scene:
Here's truck-mode Optimus, going the wrong way on a one-way street:

And here's Optimus, Bonecrusher, Ratchet, and what could be either Barricade or an actual police car. They look to be just hanging out between takes.

As much as I hate ItAin'tCoolNews, they've snagged some cool looks at the final optimus rendering, including a comparison shot of his face in "standard" and "battle" modes.

The "standard" face was explained long ago (before any design work had been done), explaining that "They" wanted Prime's mouth to be visible to better convey emotion. Kinda ironic how that turned out.

Hopefully this'll actually post this time.

Another day, another picture of Prime, and this time he's packin' heat.

EDIT: hotlinking doesn't work. Just go over there and look: http://www.tformers.com/article.php?sid=6474

Interesting that the gun seems to plug into his arm rather than being held by a grip. Maybe Prime just got tired of losing it (which might also explain the lack of trailer). If you look at his back, you can kinda see where it seems to stow (compare the view of his back here with the one I posted earlier; it looks like something's been rearranged beyond the "energy belt" plugging in).

This could also be reassuring for Megatron's arm-cannon. Maybe it folds away, or just isn't shown on the design sketch. Or maybe Optimus stole it.

The energy belt is a cool idea; it looks like it's a simple power conduit that happens to look like a belt-feed.

I should stress again that all of these pics are "early" design work (including the "final" designs I posted a day ago, mea culpa), and have probably already been greatly modified. Looks like nothing'll be final until we see it on screen or in plastic.

Current theory, from top left to bottom right: Blackout (you can see his spinny-thing sticking up behind Megatron's shoulder), Megatron, Possibly-Frenzy (to Megs' left), Ratchet (by the building), Optimus (in front of Megatron), Starscream (there're two others behind him, but we can't see who), Jazz and Bumblebee (standing fully exposed front'n'centre), and off on the left is someone we don't know, possibly Brawl (the tank) or Bonecrusher (the mine-sweeper thing). It's probably Brawl, given the colours.

Schroedinger's Frenzy could also be Ironhide (the size fits), which leaves Barricade and another Potential-Frenzy hiding behind Starscream. Scorponok likely isn't present.

It's hard to ID them, because this is our first glimpse of most of these robots. Jazz is recognizeable because of the car front on his chest, and Ratchet's colours identify him. As I said, the black guy in back is the right size and colour to be Ironhide, or maybe Barricade if I'm misjudging perspective, but we have no clue how Frenzy looks in either mode, so it's up in the air.

(These are shrunken to avoid freaking people out. The originals can be found over at http://www.seibertron.com/news/view.php?id=8350.)

And here's another pic of Bumblebee, soaking up some sun between takes. This movie star thing's really gotten to him.

Okay, technically the maquette's not fully assembled here (you can see his hands are disconnected, and I know from previous shots that he has some back kibble that's been removed to allow him to lie down), but you can get a good look at where the kibble seems to go. I see the corners of his front end on his chest, and he has wheels in his ankles. I like the license-plate-as-belt-buckle look.

Here's a shot of the blue-screen-like model frame for Optimus Prime's head & shoulder. Obviously, the scale prevents him from getting the Bumblebee treatment. You'll note that his face doesn't seem as gaunt here (more like his familiar G1 face), suggesting that the early designs have swung back a bit conservatively.

There are also some less-interesting shots there, mostly showing alt-modes and extras.

*SPOILER CONJECTURE AHEAD*
*READ AT OWN RISK, AND TAKE WITH LARGE GRAINS OF SALT*

And here's what looks like pieces of everybody's favourite badass copter, Blackout. These are being transported aboard the USS Shoup (yes, there's a vessel called the Shoup), for some (presumeably) second-unit stuff still to be filmed.

Main filming ended last week, though the CG has yet to be finalized, and they still haven't even cast all the VAs yet. Frank Welker (the original voice of Megatron, Soundwave, Rumble, Wheelie, and a cast of thousands) is still in consideration for Megatron, but nothing's been signed yet.

Fine by me; I like anime. Japan are the only people who've done giant robots right. (I mean, what has America produced? Robot Jox?)

'Sides, the original aesthetic needed two completely different character designs: one for the toy (which typically couldn't move) and one for the cartoon character (which looked like a human wearing foam armour). Trying to adapt the original look of them would result only in Power Rangers comparisons.

A bit "after the fact," given the big picture of him upthread, but we now have glimpses of Bumblebee's concept art.

Harbx has posted them as parts of a wallpaper: http://www.harbx.com/archives/2006/11/transformers_bu.html

I'm not gonna post them here 'cause they'd deform the thread even more than it is, but they're right there on the page I linked to.

We get to see all four of Bumblebee's modes (1974 Camaro, old-robot, 2007 Camaro, new-robot), as well as his battle mask (looks like just his helmet sliding forward), and his staggering array of weapons. Looks like the gun-arm is gonna be a standard-issue thing, and Bumblebee also hets a couple of racks of shoulder-mounted missiles.

You can't spell "badass" without the 'Bee.

(These are shrunken to avoid freaking people out. The originals can be found over at http://www.seibertron.com/news/view.php?id=8350.)

According to current-to-my-knowledge rumours, Scorponok won't transform in the movie --his big scene is apparently a desert battle with the army that serves only to establish that yes, the human military can kill TFs. It's also rumoured/speculated that this "Scorponok" is an animal-like drone, linked to Blackout (as Laserbeak and Ravage were linked to Soundwave).

I'm also skeptical of scripts, just 'cause there've been a lot of script-like fanfics, and we already know that this script has gone through at least three heavy revisions. Plus I'm avoiding it just on principle, 'cause I don't want plot spoilers.

damnit. just wrote massive paragraphss and accidently highlighted it and all gone. fuck.

well. fuck. erm.. crap. anyway.. completely off the topic now because i can't be pissed to rewrite it all

aparently that link to some script says there is a decepticon thats turns into a beat box.lol.
http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/726/726524p1.html
seem a little outnumbered the autobots. i wanna see what happens (OBVIOUSLY).

(bah. summarising my before-post. basically wha ok then scorponok can't transform? though he would atleast turn into a different mode, maybe a battle mode or something with arms guns etc. only in desert? i think bullets won't kill TF and military will get screwed on their first couple of tries then they find some energon or something and can use it against them cue big battle)

lol. imagine if there's a giant battle and lots of death/explosions and eventually its over and autobots are like "omg we are the l33t" then omnicron walks upto earth and says "yeea, i want my energon back" and swats TF into space and takes energon. is it just me.. OR IS THAT THE BEST TF ENDING EVER!!!1

my bad

EDIT: OH YEAH. and is it just me. or do most or their feet remind you of General Grievous's (from Star WARZ lol). they all look like gundam/lego bionicle. well i supoose its kinda better than big clunky thing walking round. alot better.

Bumping this thread with our first glimpse of an actual Transformer in actual action:

Brought to us by ItAin'tCool: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30809

It's Scorponok, chasing down a squad of soldiers in Iraq (where the Decepticons make their first appearance).

(Paramount blew the whistle, so I'm following AICN's lead and taking it down, though it's staying in my photobucket. Anyone wants to see it just let me know.)

Yeah, this guy's gonna be giving people nightmares.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Got to see the image before Paramount had it taken down. Not too bad, but the bots still look way to CGI when compared to people.

And we now have our first glimpse of Doc Ratchet:

(Swiped from TFW2005 'cause their server is made out of tinfoil and wet kleenex.)
