CYBERSNARK

This is the sequel to the Transformer Movie Designs thread ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=8&t=23261). We have some Earth-shattering news that merits a new thread: Our first look at finished toys!!!

These are apparently "preview toys," to be released next May (the movie is released in July) to drum up interest among collectors. I'm guessing it'll be a single wave of "pre-movie" characters (well, movie characters, but pre-movie designs).

Possible oblique spoilers:

Select to view spoiler:

Certain authorities behind the film have suggested that Transformers don't use spacecraft (which is luh-suh, but that's another story). These toys represent the "meteor forms" the Transformers use to make planetary entry, and possibly to travel interstellar distances.

After making planetfall, they scan local hardware and reformat themselves to match local "dominant life-forms" (the default scan is set to silicon/plasma-based "life," for reasons that should be obvious). Apparently the reformatting tech is carried onboard which. . . requires some narrative explanation.

So no, these are not what they'll look like throughout the movie, though you may see these forms briefly at the beginning or in flashback.

(The site is in Japanese, but you can still see the pretty pictures.)

Of note are the in-package pics:

Explanation for the blurbs: their bodies are referred to as a "protoform," which, per Beast Wars, is what a TF wears before adopting an alt-mode. IOW, these figures are effectively naked (like some kinda "Trash" exclusive Mal figure ). The "Allspark" (in addition to being a messageboard ) is the MacGuffin for the movie; in previous canon, the Allspark is the "well of souls" from which all Transformers are born and where they return upon death --basically Heaven. In G1 (and since), Transformers have had a sacred artifact called the Matrix (or "Autobot Matrix of Leadership," or "Creation Matrix"), but we can't call it that on film 'cause Neo's lawyers will kick our butts.

I also like how both bios describe their "flaming, sparking" descents through the atmosphere. I can just see Starscream, haloed in flame, as ominous music swells. . .

*wh-clunk*

STARSCREAM: . . . What was that? . . Was that my port buffer panel? Did my port buffer panel just fall off for no slagging reason?!?

And I have some out-of-package pics, as mirrored by the Allspark:

So, yeah. Love.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Not too bad. I would buy them. Then again I have been collecting Transformers since I was in elementary school.

Looking forward to seeing what else they have in store for us.
