A year before Blade Runner came out, Outland was the first 'grunge' SF, borrowing and expanding immensely from Alien, it made life in space seem absolutly filthy (And I ain't talkin' about the table dancers!!).

Two questions: Any have any fondness for it,
AND
When will we ever get a decent transfer of it to DVD; I'm tired of having to watch the full-frame side of the present one!

Never heard of it. Which I suppose is why you called it a 'forgotten classic' in the thread title ;) I'll look out for it.

Not forgotten by ME! Sean Connery, yeah baby. Good flick. I like the echo-ey feeling to the passageways, the weird feeling of being that close to the vacuum of space.

ou contraire mon amie... i think you have quite the rapier-like wit about yourself...

Outland, man, i had to look that up cause i was so sure that it pre-dated Alien - but, not - it did indeed come 2 years after that great Sigourney Weaver, edge of the seat, nail biter...

Alien was the first sci-fi movie, (for me anyways), that really gave a glimpse of the vasty nothingness that is space, and that dealt with some really nasty life forms (other than that crowd down at the Shoot & Spit Saloon just down the street).... and i enjoyed that movie very much.

Outland was pretty much on track to be that same sort of alien feeling flick until it fell back into the same old rehash of many a good guy, bad guy sorta film. I did enjoy it, and in fact have an old VHS copy proping up the corner of that ratty table over there. As with many movies i see, the lack of imagination by the screenwriters leads me to believe that many of films we are subjected to are simply reruns of someone elses ideas.

I would be happy to purchase a good dvd copy - but like you said... not available. I am looking forward to a film coming out in December, I think, Children of Men with Clive Owen... it looks very interesting...

hows that? clear as mud... thank you very much

Oh, love that movie! I agree with the 'grunge' definition, too. I also have the full-screen of that...I'll second the request for a DVD transfer!

(Waits for a copy of DVD to fall on lap)

The 88 cent video store I frequented had a running list of movies I'd rent throughout the year.

Outland was on that list too many times, but I barely remember it now. I know I love it as I love all things Connery.
Other movies on the list:
Demon Knight
Gone in 60 Seconds (Original)
Full Metal Jacket
Billy Jack
A Bridge Too Far
To Hell and Back
Predator 2
The Crow
Highlander
Red Dawn
American Graffitti 1 and 2

I miss the days of VHS. Who else feels a little old without those days?

Outland was just High Noon in space, an extravagant visual-fest cloaking a simple inevitable gunfight.
But Connery, Sternhagen, and all the set designers and FX crew (not to mention Jerry Goldsmith- which I just sorta did...) made it a golden guilty pleasure.

Every time I hear that word, or the phrase "Outlander", I think back to my favorite quote from CHILDREN OF THE CORN (and from SOUTH PARK, from one of my favorite episodes).

"OUTLANDER, WE HAVE YOUR WOMAN!!! SHE STILL LIVES, OUTLANDER!!! OUTLANDER!!! HER BLOOD WILL SPILL OUTLANDER!!"

Said by either a red-haired kid with an overbite, or Eric Cartman, it's a pretty kick-ass line, up with "Warriors, come out and play-ay."

**************************************************
"We have five million Cybermen. How many are you?"
"Four"
You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?"
"We would destroy the Cybermen with ONE Dalek. You are superior in only one respect."
"What is that?"
"You are better at dying."

Trash talk between a Cyberman and a Dalek. It doesn't get any better than that.

I had to come back and mention another fine piece of work by Mr. Connery. A truely inspired example of cinéma vérité that would have made Timothy Leary proud... i'm referring of course to Zardoz... a quirky little ditty that was known not so much for it's Giant Floating Stone Head as the bare naked tatas that were scattered throughout the film... at least that's pretty much all i remember about it (the bare naked tatas, that is)... course i was just a teenager at the time and bare naked tatas were very high on my list of desirable film attributes...

does anyone even remember what that film was about...?

hmmm, bare naked tatas... (sorry - teenage flashback)

Yeah, the tatas were a draw, definitly...

Zardoz was John Boorman's (Excalibur) acid-trip take on a future run like The Wizard of Oz.

Not bad, if you can deal with the artsy-ambiguity of many scenes.

Back to Outland...

Possibly the greatest foot chase ever filmed!

Also the greatest ending to a foot chase!

When Spota's cornered in the kitchen, and eyeing that butcher's knife, O'Neil get's that "I'm too tired" look, and unloads his riot gun around Spota's head: "Think it over."

Bloody priceless!

Top two foot chases of all time (just by chance both backed-up by Jerry Goldsmith magic?) are Shamus (1973, Burt Reynolds) and Outland.
Warriors had a good one too, but not in this league.

Plus, Peter Hyams is a HELL of a cinematographer.
I'll say it again; Outland is a flimsy idea, executed with style and precision. It's criminal that a really good DVD is not available...

Yeah, I haven't heard of as many director/cinematographers as I have writer/directors.
How many of those have there been?

And you've reminded me of a great little company back in those days, called the Thinking Cap Co.
They put out the official Nostromo cap from ALIEN, the Federal Security Agency & ConAm 27 caps from Outland... I had 'em all!

Easily one of my all-time favorite movies. LOVED Mary Sternhagen. It does have something in common with Firefly--set in the future, but no incredibly advanced technology with a Big Damn Hero against the big company and government.

Didn't you post this a little while ago as well?

Of course there's a reason for it's western feel, it's based on High Noon. It's also supposed to take place within the Aliens Universe.

Just picked up the DVD of Steve McQueen's last movie, The Hunter, and found it had been co-written by Peter Hyams!

The point was driven home, though, when a character named "Spota" was introduced near the beginning of the picture!

Quote:

Hyams, Peter - Spota's the Name
http://www.eeggs.com/items/31677.html
The name "Spota" appears in numerous Peter Hyams movies, from the drugged out space worker in "Outland" to a thug in "The Presidio" to the name of a NYC bar in "End Of Days". "Spota" also appears in "Timecop", "The Relic", and "Sudden Death".
In the audio commentary of the "End Of Days" DVD, Hyams finally admits, after long standing rumors on the Internet, that Spota is his wife's maiden name, and he places it in his movies as a Valentine to her.

Also, the movie had a truly astonishing foot chase through Chicago!

(Plus, the apartment building with the glass elevator, where "Winston" lives, is at the top of my street! )

Yep, and the funniest thing about McQueen's character: He's the World's Worst Driver! ROTFLMAO!

Watch it back-to-back with Bullitt and/or Le Mans!

Here's a cool write-up about it, from a somewhat unlikely source:

It's out on DVD and at a quite low price. So is the semi-sequel "The Junkman" (ever seen a '83 Cadillac Eldorado fly?).

Hey, I'm using tape (S-VHS) instead of Tivo, but I don't miss watching the low-rez ribbon format anymore (too many rental fees for not rewinding the cassette).

No doubt. But I was in good with our video guy so there were no worries on that front. I did get the Gone DVD, but the omission of the Lois Lane Blues song and the addition in the score was a bit upsetting. Still, I had fun with it.
