Outland, man, i had to look that up cause i was so sure that it pre-dated Alien - but, not - it did indeed come 2 years after that great Sigourney Weaver, edge of the seat, nail biter...

Alien was the first sci-fi movie, (for me anyways), that really gave a glimpse of the vasty nothingness that is space, and that dealt with some really nasty life forms (other than that crowd down at the Shoot & Spit Saloon just down the street).... and i enjoyed that movie very much.

Outland was pretty much on track to be that same sort of alien feeling flick until it fell back into the same old rehash of many a good guy, bad guy sorta film. I did enjoy it, and in fact have an old VHS copy proping up the corner of that ratty table over there. As with many movies i see, the lack of imagination by the screenwriters leads me to believe that many of films we are subjected to are simply reruns of someone elses ideas.

I would be happy to purchase a good dvd copy - but like you said... not available. I am looking forward to a film coming out in December, I think, Children of Men with Clive Owen... it looks very interesting...

The 88 cent video store I frequented had a running list of movies I'd rent throughout the year.

Outland was on that list too many times, but I barely remember it now. I know I love it as I love all things Connery.

Outland was just High Noon in space, an extravagant visual-fest cloaking a simple inevitable gunfight.
But Connery, Sternhagen, and all the set designers and FX crew (not to mention Jerry Goldsmith- which I just sorta did...) made it a golden guilty pleasure.

Every time I hear that word, or the phrase "Outlander", I think back to my favorite quote from CHILDREN OF THE CORN (and from SOUTH PARK, from one of my favorite episodes).

Said by either a red-haired kid with an overbite, or Eric Cartman, it's a pretty kick-ass line, up with "Warriors, come out and play-ay."

I had to come back and mention another fine piece of work by Mr. Connery. A truely inspired example of cinéma vérité that would have made Timothy Leary proud... i'm referring of course to Zardoz... a quirky little ditty that was known not so much for it's Giant Floating Stone Head as the bare naked tatas that were scattered throughout the film... at least that's pretty much all i remember about it (the bare naked tatas, that is)... course i was just a teenager at the time and bare naked tatas were very high on my list of desirable film attributes...

does anyone even remember what that film was about...?

Yeah, the tatas were a draw, definitly...

Zardoz was John Boorman's (Excalibur) acid-trip take on a future run like The Wizard of Oz.

Top two foot chases of all time (just by chance both backed-up by Jerry Goldsmith magic?) are Shamus (1973, Burt Reynolds) and Outland.
Warriors had a good one too, but not in this league.

Plus, Peter Hyams is a HELL of a cinematographer.
I'll say it again; Outland is a flimsy idea, executed with style and precision. It's criminal that a really good DVD is not available...

They put out the official Nostromo cap from ALIEN, the Federal Security Agency & ConAm 27 caps from Outland... I had 'em all!

Just picked up the DVD of Steve McQueen's last movie, The Hunter, and found it had been co-written by Peter Hyams!

The point was driven home, though, when a character named "Spota" was introduced near the beginning of the picture!
