I was reading Empire magazine article about Close Encounters Of The Third Kind the other day where it mentions that Gene Hackman, Steve McQueen, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino were all considered for the role of Roy Neary that eventually went to Richard Dreyfuss.
It's no big secret that Tom Selleck was originally up for the role of Indiana Jones.
Viggo Mortenson was cast as Aragorn in LOTR after shooting had begun, knocking out Stuart Townsend.
Bruce Willis was originally up for Andy Garcia's role in Ocean's Eleven.
And in Whedonverse Sarah Michelle Gellar originally auditioned for Cordelia, and Willow was recast from the pilot.

All roles that I personally couldn't see anyone else playing now.

This made me wonder what other famous roles/characters have been recast or had other famous stars in the running for. You know the big iconic roles that just wouldn't be the same without the cast actor playing them.

humphrey Bogart was 3rd choice for Casablanca after George Raft and someone else.

Morena was actually the 2nd Inara!! hard to believe but true.

Sean Connery was not the first choice for Bond - they tried for Cary Grant and Patrick Macgoohan from Dangerman.

* i wish Nathan had replaced Andy Garcia in Things To Do in Denver when You're Dead'. *

Kate Mulgrew was not the original female captain of Voyager. They hired a French Canadian actress named Geneviève Bujold who buckled under the pressure of her role so badly that they actually cast a male for the role just in case they could not find a woman to fill the role.

I thought that would be interseting here considering Joss's views on equality, and how that series where they live in an enlightened 'Verse actually thought a woman might not be capable to be a Captain for a while.

Ronald Reagan was the original choice for Rick in Casablanca.

I have to admit Casablanca is one of my favorite movies. I think I can quote most of the lines.

If you can find it Nathan made an Outer Limits episode before Firefly that really a rehash of Casablanca. He's great, the woman really annoys me though, especially when she sings.

Gunsmoke couldn't get John Wayne to sign on, he was too busy. But he suggested his friend James Arness.

Ridley Scott tried getting Mel Gibson for Gladiator. Mel thought he was too long in the tooth, but suggested some younger dude named Russell Crowe.

Harvey Keitel was the Captain in Apocolypse Now. During filming he was too crazy, so they recast Martin Sheen in the role and reshot the scenes.
Kim Basinger was cast in Boxing Helena, then reneged and was replaced with Sherilynn Fenn. Mrs. Baldwin was sued and lost.

Leo DiCaprio and Freddie Prinze, Jr. were considered to play Spider-Man. John Malkovich turned down the role of Norman Osborne, though I think he'd have kicked butt.

That's not exactly true. Genevieve Bujould was originally cast as Janeway, true. But the reason she ended up being replaced wasn't that she buckled under the pressure of her role. It was because she wasn't used to the quick production schedule of a tv series. She's a classically trained actress whose used to working on stage and screen, where there's tons of time for rehearsal and getting inside a character. TV, on the other hand is a constant rush where it's "Actioncutlet'smoveon." And while some actors may thrive on it, others just can't take the pressure and quick turnaround.

So there wasn't any misogynist agenda going on behind the scenes. It was more of a back-up plan done out of necessity.

And as for famous bits of alternate casting, Gary Cooper was once considered for the role of Rhett Butler in GONE WITH THE WIND. He was so against the movie that he said that it was going to be the biggest flop of all time and famously said "I'm just glad it'll be Clark Gable who's falling on his face and not Gary Cooper.

I bought the dvd series of Voyager seasons 1-7 and in the extra credits they say the original actress could not handle the pressures of the show.

Yes, but was it from the stress of working on a tv show, or the cultural significance of being a Star Trek captain. The way I read it, it was the former and not the latter.

Oh, and for GONE WITH THE WIND, practically every actress in Hollywood in the 30's was considered for the role of Scarlett. Here's what was on imdb.

Jean Arthur, Lucille Ball, Tallulah Bankhead, Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert, Joan Crawford, Paulette Goddard, Katharine Hepburn, Olivia de Havilland, Carole Lombard, Norma Shearer, Barbara Stanwyck, Margaret Sullavan, Louise Platt, Tallulah Bankhead, Linda Watkins, Adele Longmire, Haila Stoddard, Susan Hayward, Dorothy Mathews, Brenda Marshall, Paulette Goddard, Anita Louise, Margaret Tallichet, Frances Dee, Nancy Coleman, Marcella Martin, Lana Turner, Diana Barrymore, Jean Arthur, Joan Bennett and Vivien Leigh.
