With 2007 drawing to a close, what movies this year did you love or hate?
What were you surprised or disappointed with?

I think with Transformers, Spider-man 3, Fantastic Four, etc - it was the geekiest year of films in a long time

Only 3 geekies?
Not much competition with past years, I think. F4 was effectively an Alba vehicle, Transformers was much too widely appealing for strictly geek classification, and the first Spidey was much more geeky.
The years of LOTR, SW, would have more geek clout, and almost each year had a Harry Potter.

Bridge to Terabithia was perhaps the biggest surprise. This wasn’t a big budget film, didn’t bring in a lot of money, and wasn’t really one I expected to be really good, certainly no where near as good as it was.

The worst movie I saw as Norbit. I’d rather have had toothpicks shoved under my toenails, but really I wasn’t expecting it to be good and tried to get the group I was with to change their mind about it, but they were set on 2 hours of raw stupidity. This movie wasn’t much of a disappointment. I kind of knew it was going to suck.

The biggest disappointment of the movies that I saw was Transformers. Okay, a movie about 80s toys that I didn’t even play with as a child can’t be all that great, but I expected more then I got. It wasn’t a terrible movie. It was big budget and if you fall into the narrow demographic of those young enough to appreciate the movie but old enough to have played with the toys, then it was probably a lot of fun, but for me, I just wanted it be over.

All in all, I mostly enjoyed my movie experience this year, but then I’m pretty selective of the movies I see.

SINGATE

Disappointments:

Spiderman 3 - Not up to par with the first 2.

Transformers - Too much about a guy trying to get laid when it should have focused on the Transformers.

Not bad but not great:

Zodiac - A bit unsatisfying because just as in the real case there is no resolution. The movie seems to go on forever. Robert Downey Jr. steals the show with his performance.

Halloween - A very different take on the original, delving more into psychological makeup of the villain. The bad thing about this approach is that it almost turns Michael Myers into a sympathetic character.

The good:

Grindhouse - Totally blew me away. This one needed to be seen in a theater to be appreciated. The contrast between the 2 films was just right. Throw in the mock trailers and this one is a masterpiece in my book.

Superbad - My brother talked me into this one and for once I am grateful for it. Sure it's low brow but who cares? Not every movie has to be complex or sophisticated. The story is funny, though it's nothing we haven't seen and the characters are all hysterical.

I didn't see as many as I had wanted to with a demanding full time job and now the preparation for a big move but those that I did see:

Stardust: Horrible, mindless crap. Perfect example of the horrible treatment great stories suffer when adapted to the big screen.

Spider-man 3: Also crap, did have a handful of cool moments and a couple ok character moments but otherwise major disappointment, especially compared to the first and second films.

Ghost Rider: Slightly entertaining yet still bad. Complete waste of talent across the board. One or two bad casting choices and the rest were either ok or great only poorly used.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Definite improvement over the last terrible adaptation yet still not very good.

Transformers: Entertaining to a degree but with enough inexplicably pathetic moments to keep you from enjoying it more than well anesthetized dental surgery.

Bridge To Terabithia: Not only the best movie I saw all year but in a very long time. Also a great adaptation that should be used as a template for other similar works.

The Last Mimzy: Not as great as Bridge To Terabithia but another of the better movies this year.

28 weeks Later: Captured a bit of the essence of the first but was too dark with few light moments to bring it back up, which was what made the first such a good film.

The Astronaut Farmer: Nice entertaining fare, not the best movie of the year but far from the worst.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End: Not a complete flop but so much so compared to the other two it can hardly be called a great movie. It is entertaining on the small screen since you can use the worst parts for a bathroom break or to get a snack.

All in all I had a mostly bad experience in the theater this year. Going to see National Treasure: Book of Secrets with my family and friends on our movie day right after Christmas. I'll let ya'll know what I think of it.

PROTOTYPE7

Nobody mentioned Oceans 13!! I thought it was a great continuation of the story. It just reflects an idea of family among friends and I think that's why I dig it so much!

Alot of people mentioned The Last Mimzy. People might say I'm to old to be watching that since I don't have kids but I liked it. I thought it was cute and reminded me of my day dreams as a child.

I'll admit, Norbit wasn't as good as the Nutty Proffessor movies but it was still pretty funny. Had slow points but I laughed.

Bourne was great. I guess that's all I'll say on that one.

Transformers I liked. I wasn't a die hard fan in the 80's and really didn't watch the show all that much... just played with some of the toys. So I guess that's why it was easier for me to like it.

Next... eh... I'm still not sure about that one.

Aqua Teen movie... dissapointing. I think the episodes are better.

Pirates... I dug it. Especially all the Jacks!

I know there's alot more I'm forgetting about but the memory is tired.

Don't worry about being too old to watch a movie, the truth is your never ever too old to enjoy a movie. The Last Mimzy was a great movie no matter what age you are. Also now that I think about it the Last Mimzy was release in 2007 but I'm pretty sure it was shown at film festivals quite awhile ago. It just took it's time making it out. Anyway it was still released in 2007 so it counts.

Also I should have added Pans Labyrinth. It was an amazing movie and one of the most chilling films I've seen in years. Smart, original and well cast I was hard pressed not to enjoy every minute of it. I know the foreign language puts some off but there are subtitles and my mother who'd also seen it and does not speak Spanish had no trouble following or enjoying the story.

EDIT: After reading what I just posted I realized how much I sounded like a bought out movie reviewer. HAHA It's really true about Pan's Labyrinth though.

For me that’s a wait and watch on HBO thing. It’s only real redeeming value is all the big names attacked to it. If you replaced all those big names with no-bodies who could act just as well - no one would watch it. I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, but I would enjoy it a lot more watching it one night lounging on the couch in my pajama bottoms with a Scotch.

You should have read my glowing review of Pan’s Labyrinth. I couldn’t find enough adjectives to describe how good that movie was.

But it was a 2006 film, not a 2007. That’s why I didn’t include it. I saw it in 2007, as I think most people did, probably on DVD, because it didn’t hit the box office that hard. Made plenty of money, but not a lot of people saw it.

Surprisingly good:
The Last Mimzy was great, I thought, for it's genre. The kid actors were excellent, and I thought it better than Bridge to Terabithia, and I recommend both.
Mr Brooks - Better than expected.
Super Fuzz.

Transformers - never saw the cartoons, other than the references in "Big", but enjoyed it despite the teen kid romantic interest stuff.
Grind House
Awake - really liked it.
No Country for Old Men - although the last couple Coen Bros fliks I've avoided, this one was better than I'd hoped.
Pan's was 2006 according to references, but I saw it in late spring 2007 in cinema, and it was better than I'd hoped.

Good, as expected:
Bourne
Die Hard 4
Halloween - actually better than expected, and Gump's Jenny was HOT here.

Dissapointing:
POC 3, but I didn't expect much.
I am Legend - although I didn't expect much, I was still hoping.
Messengers - with the Leslie Robb from Bridge, the cast was good, but it didn't come together as well as it should have.
The Last Legion - had hoped for great, epic, so was dissapointed it was only good. Still recommend it, though. Much better than most.
Pathfinder - had really high hopes. Decent, but not what I'd hoped.

Bad:
Beowulf. I want my money back.

Spoiler alert for Last Mimzy: I loved how, although the girl was the last hope of saving the human race, she needed a brother to accomplish her goal, whihc was why all the other Mimzys failed. Plus, when the molecular logo was identified, I had no problem believing the Mimzys had a history of failure.
