Did anyone catch the Dr Who special? What did everyone think about it? Plus i cant believe Catherine Tate is in the new season i dislike her that much that i dont think i will watch any of the new season and will probably stick with Torchwood because that looks really good

the air when she oughtta fall down. Tells you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens.
Makes her a home." Mal

I haven't seen the Christmas Special yet. I'll find in a couple of days I hope. However....

I don't think she's in the whole season. My info could be wrong but I think Martha returns after a brief stint with the gang at Torchwood. Torchwood will also be seeing James "Spike" Marsters.

LWAVES

I kinda thought it was average overall. Some good bits but let down by some really bad bits.

Pros.
Having the Titanic as a spaceship was nice but a bit obvious.
David Tennant was still great as the Doctor.
Kylie was good in her role (and I wasn't looking forward to her being in it coz I really don't rate her much in any way).
It's still Doctor Who.

Cons.
Did the Doctor and Astrid have to have an emotional connection in some way. Rose is the one he loves, no one else. At least with Martha it was one sided.
The whole Buckingham Palace/Queen/running out and thanking the Doctor scene. Just terrible. Worst moment ever in all the seasons.

As for the new series I've heard that they are toning and turning down the volume on Catherine Tate's performance. Make her a bit more likeable (I hope). Plus Martha will return.
The question is though, for us original series vets, will Catherine Tate be more annoying then Bonnie Langford? The race is on.

And in case you don't know.

After the next series there is supposed to be a series of specials marking Tennants last ones, in which Rose will return.

I think the XMAS specials are, intentionally, infected by the spirit of pantomime* and tend to be camped-up somewhat. (and for a series which has always registered 1.6 rows-of-tents on the camp-o-meter, that's pretty bad).

As for Astrid: (a) She kissed him (b) The (new) Doctor has always shown an immediate liking for anybody with that sort of get-up-and-go.

I think the future plans for assistants etc. from snippits on the BBC website are (no plot details but you may not want to know):

Select to view spoiler:

Catherine Tate will be the main assistant for the next series. Martha will be moving to Torchwood (due to start Real Soon Now) but the climax of the next series of Dr Who will involve Martha, Rose (+presumably Cap'n Jack) & possibly Sarah Jane (not so sure about the latter). There isn't going to be a full Season 5, but there will be several "specials" instead. After that, everything is rumor.

I wouldn't be surprised if the show were "parked" for a few years after that. Remember - this is the BBC, not a US network, and they're quite prepared to end a show while it is successful rather than keep on until it fails (think "The Office", "Life on Mars") - although I doubt that they'd "conclude" Doctor Who, I think a few years' hiatus would do it good.

* Not sure whether our USA friends have pantomimes (a chorus of "Oh yes we do!" will settle the issue).

To say that The Doctor can only have an emotional connection with Rose rings pretty damn false to me. Yes, he loves Rose in a way that's different than his other companions. But he still cares deeply for the other people he's traveled with, even if he is often incapable of showing it. One of the greatest things about The Doctor is the fact that he truly cares about everyone. It's the reason he constantly risks his life to save others. So the idea that he can have an emotional connection or even love someone other than Rose is entirely valid.

My family made me turn it off half way through! Something about being sociable and sitting down to dinner at the table. Honestly, those people have got to get their priorities sorted!

It's repeated on New Year's day but I'm at a party then so I'm in the process of downloading it.

What I managed to catch looked very good though. To be fair I'm never going to be at my most intelligently critical when faced with David Tennant grinning in a dinner jacket!

Me neither.

I quite liked it. It wasn't bad. It was cheesy. And I like cheesy

Hey! Happy Christmas Hobbleit!

What I like about Dr Who is that is revels in it's own cheesiness, it never tries to take itself too seriously. Just the odd roll of the eyes when they get attacked by a killer Christmas tree AGAIN, makes the difference betwen embarrassing and funny!

God helpme but I've also become somewhat hooked on the BBC Robin Hood series. Now that has some truley embarrassing moments where they seem to be trying for the same irreverent humour but fall short into cliched campness. And yet I still watch it. I guess there's just no hope for me! I'm a cheesaholic!
