Some late breaking news on EW.com.

The starship Enterprise will be waiting an additional five months before docking in theaters. On Wednesday, Paramount announced that it is postponing the release of the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek reboot, from December 2008 to May 2009. Does the change in plans have something to do with script rewrites or budget overruns or other production snafus? According to Variety, the studio arrived at this decision while reshuffling its release schedule now that the strike is over; the walkout caused shooting on several films to be postponed, thus creating gaps in the movie calendar that needed to be filled. Also, apparently, studio insiders claim that the film stands to gross more money in the summer than it would have in the fall.

The movie is the 11th feature-film installment in the Gene Roddenberry-created franchise, and it'll be the first to explore the central characters' early careers. Chris Pine will play Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto is set for Spock. Leonard Nimoy will also return as an older version of the Vulcan he made famous starting in 1966.

Kinda sucks to hear this, but also can't help but feel glad to hear this. I had read an earlier story on how because of the writer's strike, they weren't able to do some on-set writing or improvising to make things better. Like they had come up with a great idea for a scene on the bridge, but because their hands were tied, they couldn't do anything. So now with the writer's strike over, I think they'll be doing a lot more re-shoots to improve the overall quality of the film

As much as I was looking forward to taking my dad to see it on Christmas Day I'm willing to wait. If only for an overall better film. I sometimes wonder, after watching a particularly horrible film or playing a obviously rushed game, why they didn't just take more time and get things right. This always seem especially true with near cult status, fan beloved franchises. I think in most cases it's that they just don't care if it's good or not, just as long as they make a buck. This shows Abrams and co. are committed to producing a quality film and not just cashing in on the Star Trek fanatics willingness to see anything attached to their beloved franchise. I am not even half as interested in Trek as I am the 'Verse but it's Scifi and looks good, and my Dad is a Trekkie so I care. I can wait.

Totally agree with you on that. I'm always baffled when a studio announces a release date for a blockbuster even before they've written the outline or the first page for the screenplay, let alone a frame. And how these massive films always have jacked-up production schedules and deadlines to meet before these arbitrary dates they have to make. I of course can see it from the studio's POV where you have to have your big film done by either summer or Xmas so that a sizable source of income can come in so that you can finance all these other movies and be able to give the thousands of people in your employ money for food on the table. But yeah, maybe a little extra time given to your tentpole flick would make the overall film better.

Also in the same boat. Was looking forward to seeing it with my brother (the teaser was I think the only part of CLOVERFIELD he liked) when he comes back home for Xmas.

FOLLOWMAL

I was looking forward to seeing it with my daughter and son in law and dragging my husband along. He's a "reluctant" fan. He'd say he wasn't a fan, but we say he's just not seasoned enough yet.

Christmas 2008 or Summer 2009, matters not. We'll be there.

I expect there will be some more announcements like this as schedules are shuffled and things are thought of in the light of improvement.
I'm glad the Writer's Strike is over and I'm sure all of them are too.

You could describe me that way as well. I do not like a handful of aspects of Trek. And will laugh uncontrollably anytime I hear anyone say how great an actor William Shatner is... even his most recent stuff. Still I have to admit I enjoy TNG and Voyager sometimes. I'm very glad to see Leonard Nimoy returning as the Elder version of Spock. He's a great actor with such an amazing voice. Zach Quinto has quite a pair of shoes to fill.

I never understand the attacks on Shatner. Yes, at times he has over acted (the same can be said of Stewart, and Mulgrew), but at other times, he has been subtle and brilliant! Sorry, but what other Trek actor has gone on to win two Emmys, a Golden Globe, and a Saturn Award?

He has reinvented his career better than any other TV actor. He's starred in three hit series (TJ Hooker, Rescue 911, Boston Legal), has written several books, and like Stewart, is trained as a classical Shakespearean actor.

Laugh all you want, but most actors can only dream of a career like his!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

I'm with you on that. If you want to see a side of Shatner that you'd never expect, rent JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG. It's this old Stanley Kramer movie from the early 60's about one of the Nuremberg trials with Spencer Tracey in the lead. And even though there are a ton of other acting heavyweights in the film, Shatner holds his own with a small part played very straight as a military liaison for Tracey's character. He also did another episode of the original Twilight Zone as one half of a newlywed couple who match wits with a demonic penny machine.

So while it may be hard to see Shatner as a straight actor with all the bad impressions and the bran commercials and priceline.com ads, if you dig deep, you can find the hints of a real actor within him.

In a way, I like to think of Mal as sort of a byproduct of Captain Kirk. Yes, Joss has said that Mal is sort of his version of Han Solo. But you can see a bit of the Kirk swagger and amused look on his face on occassion. When Mal smiles, it's almost the same way Kirk smiles. And I think Mal flying directly into Reaver territory would have been something Kirk would have done as well.

I totally agree with this.

I like Shatner. Not just as Kirk, but in most of the roles I've seen him in. I love it that he has a sense of humor about himself too.

Totally. I saw him do a bit at the Just for Laughs comedy festival where he did a parody of the "I am Canadian" Molson Canadian beer commercial that was all the rage a few years ago where he debunked all the cliche's about him. My favorite was "And yes, I have gone where no man has gone before. But she was of age and I had her father's permission!!"

And to continue the TREK analogy with FIREFLY, Mal is Kirk, Simon is Spock and Jayne I think is a more vulgar version of Dr. McCoy. They both kind of have that acerbic personality. And the bantering that he and Simon have is kinda like the arguments that McCoy and Spock had on the series and in the movies.

I always thought that if FIREFLY had lasted for years and years, that they should have done like what HEROES is doing and have some of the famous TREK actors on the show. Like Shatner would be Mal's estranged father and they have a relationship like the one between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery in LAST CRUSADE, and maybe right before he died, James Doohan could have been Kaylee's dad. Or at least base the character of Kaylee's dad on Scotty or another TREK engineer.

I dunno. As a sci-fi geek I always like little fan homages here and there. So I think it would be cool for some veterans of sci-fi to do guest bits and small but integral parts on various sci-fi shows. Like who here didn't get a rise when it was revealed that Hiro's dad was played by none other than George Takei?
