I thought Pitch Black, Dark Fury & Chronicles were a blast!
Any Browncoat love for Riddick out there?
(And try not to be f**kin' insulting...)

Pitch Black, I thought, was highly underrated. It is perhaps second only to Alien for the best suspense sci-fi. The Chronicles of Riddick I wasn’t to jazzed about. It actually struck me as Conan 2004. Not that it was bad, but it was just sort of more of the same.

I really liked Pitch Black, Chronicles I felt was very overdone and baroque but not as bad as most people seem to think it is, Dark Fury was pretty good too. Escape From Butcher Bay is supposedly a better game then Chronicles was a movie, it's on my to-play list but it's not very high so it'll be a long time before I get to it.

It did lack that lean meanness that PB had...but I loved that It didn't get a sequel- it ended perfectly!

Pitch Black is a lesser classic, to my mind. And I really liked Chronicles too - SciFi meets Greek Tragedy, journey through hell and a hero's battle with a god included. Never did see Dark Fury though.

Haven't seen Pitch Black.

Chronicles I found was confussed. Far too weighty with intent causing it to lose it's way. Art direction was stellar though, almost DUNE (1984) in epic scope.

When I first saw Pitch Black I didn't like it.
Thought it was trying to be too arty with different coloured filters on the camera, so it put me off.
I was also really tired whilst watching it.
But it nagged at me and I bought it cheap on DVD and absolutely loved it.

Chronicles was a good movie that expanded enough about who Riddick was without going into too much detail and ruining the character.
Plus I loved the ending where he found himself in a situation he definitely didn't want to be in.

Pitch Black I thought was half brilliant - the first half. At some point it seemed to get lost, like maybe someone's dog ate the script. Or maybe the budget ran out, I don't know. Still, I love the first half. Such a great horror concept - monsters that crowd up in the dark around you. **shudder**

Chronicles I avoided for a long time because I thought it looked kinda stupid. Standard sci-fi rambo-ish crap. I was so wrong! I may be giving it extra credit because my expectations were low, but when I finally watched it I really liked it. I love the hell/hot sun world, and Vin Diesel is quite entertaining. Sure, there's some silly stuff (How many times can a guy dramatically take off/put on his stylin' goggles to show his funky pupils?) but the effects are excellent and the storyline much above most Hollywood sci-fi. It's a good romp.

I haven't seen the other of the three. Really need to.

Darn, wish I owned Chronicles. I feel like watching it now.

It connects the two features, like the comic did for FF/Serenity.

You'd be slightly less confused by seeing the other two. And yeah- terribly Dune-like! That's one reason I like it so much!

Ever the promoter of alternate sci-fi, eh Chris?

I really like Pitch Black and Chronicles I didn't like at first, probably because it wasn't so much an extension of PB.

BUT, once I got over that preconceived notion, I found it actually painted a broader, richer picture.

Nothing wrong with Greek tragedy meets sci-fi. I like that concept a lot. Check out Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Not so much sci fi but a re-telling of the Homer's Odyssey (sp?).

Dark Fury is what I had hoped Joss would have done for Firefly Serenity bridging...

Some people here are highly opposed to the dual suns of Pitch Black. I liked all of the films, and agree they were greatly underrated, particularly Pitch Black. Rahdan Mitchell and Alexis Davalos have progressed nicely.

I really liked Pitch Black, because it was a reasonably small budget film that came in under the radar. The money went where it needed to go, on the effects. And the script made sure that not all the characters were even likable, far more realistic than the line-up of pretty people you usually get.

Plus, Vin Diesel. On the guilty pleasures list, alongside Jayne, and Jason Statham...

The Chronicles was in the bad-enough-to find-cult-greatness category. It blatantly pinched from Dune, and Giger's artwork, and certain Biblical themes, but it had pretensions to the epic which made it fabulously bonkers. I may have to watch it again later. (Yes, I own it. But I can't find my copy of Pitch Black.)

edit: somewhere in the BSR, there is actually a crossover with FF/Riddick. It wasn't bad, called something like Under a Blue Sun? (I think)

Pitch Black was a good cult film. It had the cultish feel down nicely, with interesting artistic touches related to the camera filters representing the the binary star system this planet is a part of. Riddick projected a great lean-mean air, willing to manupliate, kill, or get along with others all in an effort to survive. I enjoy how he was protrayed as the "genius savage". Reminds me of Braveheart.

Looking at it as a cult film, I give it higher than average marks. I must, however, knock it down a peg due to it's unique logical problem: if the creatures of this planet had fed on everything that lived there (Think about the boneyards the characters discovered) what exactly are they eating now? Each other? It's the same logic placed upon alien dominated worlds (alien franchise), once xenamorphs control a planet, they would eventually have to die off due to a lack of prey.

The Chronicles film was overblown. I had been expecting a more gritty firefly-like world but ended up with a high society dune-like universe. Here's a youtube Dune clip for artistic reference:

For me, the world of chronicles didn't jive with the rusty-metal look of pitch black. Not that I don't like a high society feel in my sci-fi...people that know me know I'm a dune universe expert....but I guess I just wanted to see more grit and less gold for riddick.

Hey, as a footnote, did anyone here play the riddick video game Escape from Butchers Bay? I understand it details how he broke out of prison prior to his re-capture transport in PB. I'm curious to know if the game went with the "grit" look of PB or if it was made more like chronicles.

Do not fear me. Our's is a peaceful race and we must live in harmony.

I haven't played but I have it and I've heard about it, most of the reviews I've seen say that it's much better than the movie. That probably means that it's more like Pitch Black then Chronicles.

pitch black, easily one of my top 5 fav films, love the camera work, love the story line, radha mitchell and vin diesel's chemistry was brilliant as was cole hauser as the dope takin bounty hunter, wat a brilliant film for such a small budget.ok am ranting.
dark fury, excellant link piece
chronicles, thought at first it was to lavish to over done, but it is the opposite of pitch black in that way an made it stand alone, excellant visuals again, clunky script i thought but idea was spot.not as good as pitch black but better than most drivel i've seen lately.

I love Pitch Black, one of my all time favs, along with Serenity. (Note to self: Do not say the name of the venue simply for appluase). I've visted the set to! Ate lunch on top of the ship they escaped in. Place called Coober Pedy in the middle of nowhere in outback Australia. Riddick is a helluva character.
Haven't seen Dark Fury, but apparently it is more of a mix between the two.
I've played Escape from Butcher Bay and it is very Pitch Black, but Riddick uses guns!
Chronicles, I like, but only bits. I wish they'd set the whole movie around Riddick going to Crematoria and escaping with Jack/Kiera. It was easy the best part.
Yeah I was reading that crossover in the BSR but I can't remember what happened to it. It was good.
Actually borrowing from that 'Verse (I'm calling it a tribute, which is a fancy word for stealing) in my own fic at the moment. Mal gets himself sent to a Bounty Slam to rescue a friend. The fic is a called "A New 'Verse" coming soon to a Blue Sun Room near you!

I think my only beef with Pitch Black was the insultingly obvious nature of Jack's "little secret". If you're gonna try that twist

Then either cast a girl who can actually pass as a boy - or a boy who can pass as a girl.

The ending was really refreshing - I was all prepared for the sappy ending which Hollywood conventions would suggest:

i.e. Riddick would have given his life (probably along with Imam) to save Jack and the female lead... anti-heroes are rarely allowed to survive their redemption.

...and anything which turns that on end gets my vote.

Problem with "Chronicles" was that I'd always envisioned the Pitch Black 'verse as a fairly "realistic" gritty frontier set-up (with hindsight, pretty Firelfy-esque) rather than the gothic Dune/Lexx/verging on Flash Gordon one that was revealed.

Possibly - but OTOH, taken on its own, it might have felt like a re-tread of Pitch Black. Also, without the goth/fantasy wrapper one might start to quibble about the existence of a breathable atmosphere (and lack of really, really strong winds around sunrise/sunset) on such a planet.

Richard B Riddick.

And I liked em all, Pitch Black was set on the arse end of the verse, and looked it, while Helion Prime was smack dab in the middle of civilization proper.

Select to view spoiler:

Some stuff... Dark Fury, the chicks strongman I highly suspect was a Furyan himself, his conduct and attitudes highly suggested it, and the voice acting in making him such a pompous ass was just downright great.

"told you that was comin"
Best Riddick line EVER.

Chronicles, I REALLY liked Aereon, she's like me, always got her own game in mind, same kind of outlook and philosophy.

Toombs - now, it's been mentioned Riddick has a military past... didja notice that Toombs is the only guy he COULD have killed, repeatedly, almost SHOULD have killed... and didn't ?

Two versions of his final fate exist, mind, one of which offers some chance at survival, as well.

But thing is, Riddick seems to have a history with the guy, and almost goes out of his way to not kill him, or at least not do it himself.

That comes off to me that they were originally army buddies, with Toombs getting into his current career from there, and Riddick taking a more criminal bent - just a theory, but it makes a lot of sense, doesn't it ?

Totally.
I liked the anti-hero thing, been done to death, yet Riddick seemed very original.
Plus- there's a very Firefly-like-vibe I get from these movies, something real and used, fantastic and familiar...
