No, it's not random. I'm as big a FUTURAMA fan as I am of FIREFLY (maybe even moreso), so I've thought of the parallels between the two series.

Fry=Wash
Leela=Zoe
Bender=Jayne
Professor Farnsworth=Mal ("If anyone needs me, I'll be in the angry dome.")
Amy=Kaylee ("We're exactly the same, right down to the-Splech!! Is that pick nail polish?";"Is that NOT pink nail polish. The Professor's right. You are evil. And SHALLOW!";"I am not evil.")
Dr. Zoidberg/Kif=Simon (More along the lines of social awkwardness and being constantly put upon rather than medical incompetence.)
Hermes=Book (I imagine Book might have a bit of bureaucratic experience)
Zapp Branigan/Diplomatic Order of Plants (D.O.O.P)=The Alliance

It's that bibbling sound Zoidberg makes that cracks me up. My husband has taken to imitating it whenever DIY goes pear-shaped...

Guess River's too weird for even Futurama. Shame.

Actually, I would love to see the Firefly crew as Groening animations. Hell, if we can do South Park...

Yeah, FUTURAMA never really parodied any of the crazy, creepy "You're gonna die!" psychics you sometimes see in sci-fi, and any ass kicking women is Leela.

I think the closest thing they did to parodying psychics was the fortune telling robot in "Godfellas".

"Wait a minute. Bender's name isn't Bonder, it's Bender. You're a fraud!!!"
"You want false hope or not?"
"Only if you don't have any real hope."

But they have three more direct to DVD movies to go, so hopefully they can find a way to parody FIREFLY in there, although they got their venting their anger at FOX out of the way in the first few minutes of BENDER'S BIG SCORE.

Oh, and Mal's determination is the same as Fry's in the above mentioned episode. "You can't give up hope just because it's hopeless. You gotta hope even more, and cover your ears and go 'Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.'"

Nibbler would have been the eventual "man behind the curtain" that would have been revealed at the end of the series of FIREFLY lasted 5-7 years.

Yeah, I’m not too sure about this one. I have a difficult time seeing the Professor as Mal or vica versa.
