Quite a few fans here I believe, so just wanted to Squeee here :) I haven't been this stoked for new episodes of a show in a LONG time.

If you're not familiar with the show, see the thread about the Season 1 (out this week on DVD): http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=8&t=33902

I love the whole cast but especially Bruce Campbell and Sharon Gless. They are both so good and funny in an "unintentional" way.

One BC bit that comes to mind from last season is when BC and Gabrielle Anwar are paying cops...they state their names as "Detectives Cagney and Lacey".

(For those youngsters around here, Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly starred in "Cagney and Lacey". The first and highest rated female lead real cop show in the 1980's)

And Sharon Gless"s turn as the hypocondriac Mom is just understated enough not to be whiny. But she is...

She had a great funny moment in tonight's premiere. After Michael explains why he could not call or visit when he was an active spy she replies, "you couldn't write?". It's such a perfect mom thing to say, made even more funny because it seemed they were about to share a touching moment of honesty.

I so knew that girl was her--she had the same voice! Poor Michael. I hope the whole season isn't just Clare getting one step ahead of him because that'll get old. But I'm pretty sure Michael'll keep putting the pieces together. Although, since she's (or "they" are giving him these jobs, wouldn't they realize that he's trying to get info. on them through the jobs? They're clearly not stupid. Maybe they're letting him find what they want him to find?

Anywho, I didn't like Michael's accent at all, seemed way too fake to me.

Fi and Michael's "talk" :( "You don't mess an asset's scent when she walks out of a room". And his mother...wow. It reminds me of MY mom and how, regardless of what the conversation is about, she'll steer it back into a subject she loves to criticize me about.

Oh good! I'm glad we are discussing this here, because I am head over heals about this show!
I've watched it all through renting the DVDs...
and I'm still kicking myself for not noticing that they reran the entire first season in a marathon yesterday!!!
(how could I be so stupid?!?!)
but I have now ordered the first season DVD set, so I'll hope to get that pretty soon....

I loved the first episode of the 2nd season,
it was very funny to have Michael back w/Fiona (I love Fiona!), Sam, and his Mom...
but now the situation is a little different, and actually a little more dire... I'm sure he'll learn more and more about this puppet master

This is SO much fun!

I had a lot of fun watching the first ep of season 2. I loved the two brief scenes with Michael and his Mom (rich and layered without overdoing it). The last scene with Fiona was a piece of lovely melancholy with a touch of bittersweet humor.
It was great to see Sam, too--brief but great scenes--funny too. Loved the machinations of getting into the target's building and the logistics of going through the floor, and the voiceovers on how spooks kill time during interminable waits and on the relative merits of various kinds of bullets for different applications (the one for trashing the server vs. the one he uses for blasting the window ) :)

I guess my quibble is I didn't see enough wheels turning and intensity about the meta-story taking up from where we left off last season. And the light cat and mouse act at the end with Claire doesn't quite jibe with the utter ruthlessness of some of the tactics we've seen.

Still, loving it, and I wants me some more :)

LETOV

I loved the episode although I was dissapointed in some ways. It really bothered me that after all the lead up, the driving off to be loaded up in a truck destined for goodness knows where and all the goodbyes, he's back in two days with nothing having changed.

That for me was a major letdown. As my wife pointed out, it is kind of in keeping with the show though since thinking he was getting further than he actually was has been a theme throughout.

I'm surprised nobody's commented about this but it was kinda neat seeing Tricia Helfer on this. Honestly, if I hadn't read the name and seen a video interview I wouldn't have recognized her from BSG.

Oh I had heard some reviewers who were also really bothered by this, but I felt it was pretty clever...
from my POV it is just another way these people (the govt? or some one connected w/the government?) are jerking him around!

Nothing changes, except now they expect him to dance to their tune : risk his life for them without pay or any hope of getting the burn notice lifted!

Now he has a voice and a face to search for....
so it is more personal and more intense...
while we still get to enjoy Sam, Fiona, and Michael's Mom!
(all good in my opinion)

Second ep of the new season did NOT disappoint! This show is golden- not a bad one in the bunch!!!

don't you just LOVE the relationships?

His relationship w/his Mom, so much past baggage...
so much pain on his part and denial on his Mom's part...
very few shows even think of going there (how childhood abuse nurtures a competent spy!) - it is funny and real...

Oh man, and I REALLY love the relationship w/Fiona! She is practically insane w/the love of violence thing... while he is pretty much a paranoid loner with a lot of charm, it makes for a lot of heat in their relationship but it makes perfect sense that neither one of them will ever make each other (or anyone else) happy...

in the commentary the creator said that in other shows (like Moonlighting and X-files) they worried about having the leads hook up, and they were right: it sucked the sexual tension out of the relationship. But he said "I know people like that, they sleep together all the time, and it never helps anything... it just makes things worse" ! LOL

I really love this show!

They're handling it exquisitely IMO. It's very fresh.
I can't believe they're making this show work on such a limited budget; it must make the producers work hard to be creative (hint, George Lucas).

no, I don't see any easy answers or break throughs...
he was raised to be a paranoid loner, and he has a job that reinforces that that is all that works...
it is why he can't connect w/Fiona (well... and also she is violent psychotic and kinda unstable...)
I don't think Michael will ever let down his barriers...
and I don't think his Mom will ever really get past her 'denial' (where she remembers her children's abuse as though it was spending quality time with their Dad!)

I'm pretty much thinking that this show isn't about happy endings.

But we shall see!

If they kill Fi, I'll hate the show forever!!

But I don't see this series taking the Joss route that way...it's somewhat lighter than that...I mean, when Sam took that beating and still cracked wise...c'mon, he would have been crying like a bitchy little girl in real life, WITH a broken jaw, most probably...I like the fine line between drama & comedy in it...for REAL spy TV I'll watch Smiley's stuff.

Michael is definitely wrapped a bit tight. If he does suffer a break I think it would be more interesting if he lost his cool and went all mad dog. He's so calm most of the time, even when committing violent acts, that it would be interesting to see him lash out, perhaps at one of his comrades. Imagine how Fiona or Sam would react to Michael taking a shot at one of them.

As far as happy endings go I get the feeling something bad is on the horizon. It would not surprise me if Michael's new employers make an example of someone close to him before season's end. The most likely candidate has to be his brother. I just can't see the writers messing with Fiona, Sam, or mom. There just aren't enough characters for them to pull a Joss.

Yeah, that one line of Michael's, after Madeline was telling him he should trust people, really stuck with me: "Where would I have learned to do that, Mom?"

(Since I'm one of those who haven't watched broadcast TV for about 10 years (just DVDs of shows I hear a lot about, like Firefly), I only just discovered Burn Notice last week on Hulu.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

I've gotten a little bit impressed with the technical direction of the show. Recently, there's been some issues and plotlines surrounding a Russian sniper rifle, which I correctly identified from the "x-ray" that Michael took of it as a Dragunov SVD. Turns out that it is indeed a Dragunov. My feeling is it's significant because fewer than 100 of these were legally imported into the U.S., and there whereabouts are known to the ATF - so if you wanted one that wasn't traceable, you'd have to smuggle it in.

It is a very highly-regarded sniper rifle, with accuracy reported at within 1 minute of angle (MOA) at 1000 yards. It's also quite distinctive looking.

I'm currently saving up for its "little brother" - a Romanian clone version called alternatively the Romak III, FPK, PSL, or SSG97, that's still allowed to be imported to the U.S. The Romanian version uses a larger, beefed-up version of the AK47's action mechanism, where the Dragunov used a longer-stroke system and is supposed to be quite smoother to shoot.

I just found it interesting that they were pretty darned accurate about something which is pretty arcane to most viewers, and found it a happy coincidence that they mentioned something I've been researching for myself...

I've been really impressed with all the insider info in the voiceovers since the beginning, wishing they'd put it all in a How-to book, sorta like the "Worst Case Scenario" books.

Turns out, they're gonna be putting out a series of novelizations...

Yup, dragunov.net is what I refer to as "gun porn" - I have no reason being there, but I can't stop looking and drooling!

The voiceover "instructions" have impressed me, but I never really knew for the most part whether they were BS or not. And I'd love to see them in a handy-dandy little Worst-Case Scenario handbook.

Thanks for the heads-up on the novels. I may have to check 'em out.

One thing I really detest about the show - and pretty much ALL TV shows that use it - is the way they depict tailing and surveillance, having them follow about 20 feet behind the car they're trailing, and parking right out front of the building they're surveilling.

That one bugs me to no end, but only because they seem to get other details so right.

Then I tell myself that it's a FUN show, not a Frederick Forsyth book, and I can pretty much let it go...

Yeah, and there was that one episode with the kidnapping ring, where Sam's peeking in the window of the kidnapper's hideout in broad daylight... wearing a bright red shirt!

I'd always have to shake my head when watching magnum, p.i., as he was tailing somebody in his bright red Ferrari.

They made a joke out of it in the Starsky & Hutch movie, cuz they're taking pictures of the Vince Vaughn character from the trademark candy apple red Torino, and Vince Vaughn's looking right at 'em with a curious look!

This was the most recent episode. He posed as a twitchy lab geek. One of the few times I can remember when Michael provided a major portion of the comic relief.

All I gotta say is...I'm really glad they play Burn Notice marathons occasionally so I could catch up :)

So, who saw the season finale?

Man, I *hate* how they always do those stupid cliffhangers! The commercials kept saying that he'll finally find all the info. he needs, but that was such a lie.

And I knew it would be like that because when there was like 10 min. left, I knew they couldn't wrap it up in time so I was just waiting for it to get to the "arrg, I can't wait for next season!" thing. Well, they sure know how to make a person want to see the next season :p

I love, love, love this program and the first book is true to the series. I hope they can keep that up. I find the irreverance bringing me back every week.I find Micheal's attitude much more believable than many a more "serious" spy chacterizations. He is a disfuntional person (and aren't we all to some extent)who does his job with few illusions.....ie Sometimes we do the right thing for the wrong reason or the wrong thing for the right reason. But in the end he does what needs to be done.

Actually, it was only the half-season finale. According to TV Guide,* USA Network likes to break up their shows so that they don't have to compete with the fall programs on the other, bigger networks.

It's a bummer we won't see what happens next until January, though.

Yeah, I know...but still. Though, I was surprised it'd be back in the winter because last time they made us wait a whole year. So, at least we get it sooner :)
