America loves a winner!

All day long, back to back to back, the trilogy.

I'll never forget, watching the 1st movie, on opening night. It was a midnight showing, and full of older teens, college kids, for the most part, and several older folks , easily in their 50's.

At the end, when Sam and Frodo wander off toward the Dead Marshes, and the movie ends, some teenage girl, from the sounds of it, was all indignant, and uttered " Huh ? No way ! " as if she really didn't think that's where the movie was going to end. Even after nearly 3 hours, she was waiting for the whole thing to continue. Heh....was a cute/ funny moment.

Wonder how many times she's sat through all 3 movies now.

Ah, LOTR, I usually do watch them all back to back.

May I ask, is it the extended versions or not? Coz with those it really is a haul in one day - you'd have to start pretty early!

Unless it's a movie channel, of course they'll be edited. Gotta make room for commericals, after all. Naturaly, I've got all extended versions on DVD, but seldom make the time to sit down and WATCH the darn things. Now, when they come on t.v. ? Hell yeah, I'm watchin!

Go figure.

My daughter and I were watching The Two Towers and I commented to her, "You know, I keep expecting these movies to start "showing their age", even tho Fellowship is already almost a decade old." But we both agreed that they are holding up well, VERY well.

And no, unfortunately, they did not show the extended versions. To me, the original versions are "inadequate". But we have Peter Jackson to blame for that!

Actually, we can blame Peter for a lot of things.
1. Re-writing Farimir's character to have him sucumb to the ring's temptation when what set Farimir apart from his brother was his stronger will.
2. Writing in the unreal sequence of events on the stair to Cirith-ungol leading to Sam leaving his master, something that would have sickened Tolkien himself, since Sam is the recreation of Tolkiens own enlisted attendant during WWI who never left his side.
3. The lack of logic applied to the ghosts sweeping up the orcs in ROTK at the end of the battle of Pelanor Fields. The point in the book was that the Forces of the city AND the Riders of Rohan AND the men of the ships were BARELY able to turn the tide. The ghosts sweeping up the orcs like a vaccum cleaner made all previous sacrifices to be in vain. This is not what was written.
4. The warg battle in TT which never happened but was intended as a segway into more Liv Tyler screentime.
5. Cutting the head off the Mouth of Sauron: taking mysterous character from the book and making him suddenly lame for the benifit of a pop culture viewing audience.
6. In the extended ROTK: Witch King makes Gandalf cower...COWER! BS! And also breaks the white wizards staff. BS! BS! BS!

I love the Fellowship of the Ring. It is the only film that doesn't attempt to fiddle around with cannon. And audiences love it! Fans like it for it's truer protrayals and pop culture embraces the action. Coming out of Fellowship I was on a high the likes of which I hadn't felt since I was a boy after seeing Empire Strikes Back. I felt like something I cherished had been handled with kid gloves...and after Star Wars I, I really needed it. But then TT and ROTK turned aside and walked other paths. There are all kinds of good moments in those films too...don't get me wrong...but Fellowship was just so....good. It was so pure. If it had attempted cannon re-writes like TT or ROTK, I wouldn't have felt so bad later...having come to the expectation of a let down from previous bad films. But it gave me what I needed...a true movie! And that made the illogic of the other 2 more bitter to swallow.

Honestly I don't blame Peter so much as Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens. THEY are the culprits.

Actually, the changes PJ & co. did in LOTR was nothing compared to Queen of the Damned back in 2002. The story in the movie is nearly unrecognizable if you've read the books (The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned).

First, I've never read the books. Second, the books needed to be shortened to fit into 3-4 hours of film. Why the story changed the way it did, I'll never know. But, for me anyway, it worked. As did the other two LOTR movies. They are still THE standard for other fantasy movies to live up to.
