I will also have to go with I4, but I have to go with the space ship exploding. Hi boys, I'm back!

How about the best failed explosion:

The Italian Job (original) i.e. "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"

THESOMNAMBULIST

How about that Hotel exploding and collapsing in Oceans Eleven - made all the better by the fact that it all took place with George Clooney's back to the whole spectacle - Explosions and cool in one shot.

Also just a little mention to Angels office going kaboom at the end of season one. That was mighty!

The Petrol Tanker going 'poof' in James Bonds - License to Kill that was memorable.

The Klingon moon, Praxis! The explosion was cool enough, but what made it memorable was watching Excelsior get knocked around! "Don't tell me that was any meteor shower!"

BTW Star Wars fans. ILM did the effect for Star Trek 6, years before George added a similar effect to his "Greedo shoots first"
Star Wars special (buy more copies) editions!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

LWAVES

I can agree with all of these I think, especially The Italian Job and V For Vendetta.

But if you can count multiple explosions how about the shelling of the trees in Band Of Brothers?
When all soliders are down in their foxholes and the forest is just laid to waste by constant bombardment.

"I don't believe in suicide, but if you'd like to try it it might cheer me up to watch."

Ocean's Eleven (2001) when they blow up the hotel. That one's a funny explosion thanks to Don Cheadle... Well technically, it was an implosion. Does that count?

The opening sequence of Apocalypse Now. A treeline is lit up overlayed by The Doors "The End". So powerful and haunting.

3 come to mind immediately:

Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, either version, the destruction of the earth.

Dr. Strangelove, the ending shot.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, the explosion of the safe and Baggage car. " Think ya used enought dynamite there, Butch. " a truly Mal Reynolds moment.

I'll see you that, and raise you the Death Star II, explosion and fade into fireworks on Endor only. Not the new release with all the celebrations, the original, Sabastian Shaw WAS Anakin's ghost version.

I'd vote for the original radio version - although the way they "imploded" the earth in the movie was quite imaginative.

The BBC TV version was the usual "planet disappears and is replaced with a firework" thing - but then they'd spent the entire effects budget on failing to give Zaphod a convincing second head.

Best "earth going foom" sequence for my money is actually in a book (the effects are always better in books): "Forge of God" by Greg Bear.

DREAMTROVE

Is there a site which has the clips so we can peruse?

Off hand, I'm going to throw in Terminator, dream sequence nuke. That was awesome. Esp. for the day. with the playground and sarah getting shredded. That was just a brilliant scene.

Recently, I liked the day after tomorrow, visually, that was some good weather porn. Scientific nonsense, trite as hell story with plotholes you can drive a truck through, but who cares, it was awesome.

I like a lot of the kabooms mentioned here.

REGINAROADIE

Death Star II's blow up and Parliament Hill's destruction in V FOR VENDETTA are some of my faves as well. But one of my favorites was the locomotive plunging into the ravine at the end of BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III. After that insanely tense moment of the Delorean powering up just as it's about to hit the barricade with Marty in it and it jumping through time right before the Delorean hits it, the locomotive going off the tracks and exploding is actually the breather. When the audience can finally relax after what I personally think is the best action sequence I've ever seen. And I like the little foreshadowing of it earlier in the film.

"What about the locomotive?"
"It'll be a spectacular wreck. Too bad no one will be around to see it."

One classic one not mentioned is when Butch and Sundance blow up the rail car. They're only trying to blow off the door to the safe, but they end up blowing up the entire car inadvertently. When the dust settles, Sundance then says "You use enough dynamite there, Butch?"

Two recent explosions I liked were in TROPIC THUNDER when the explosion guy mistakes the signal and sets off the very expensive set-up way too early, thus ruining the day. And then the other one where Steve Coogan inadvertently blows himself up. "The chopper is God. You are my disciples, and I am Jesus Christ. Let's go make the greatest war film EVER!!"*turns around, hears a click* Hmmm." BOOM. Explodes right in front of the actors, but Tugg's so narcississtic, he thinks it's fake. "It's just latex and corn syrup.(tastes the blood of the director's severed head) Warm, blood flavored corn syrup, but corn syrup nonetheless."
**************************************************
"And it starts with a sentence that might last a lifetime, or it all might just go down in flames. If I let you know me, then why would you want me? Each day I don't is a shame. Each day I don't is a great shame."

Loudon Wainwright III - "Strange Weirdos" off the "Knocked Up" soundtrack
