Before that lame Jack Bauer, Jack Ryan was OUR James Bond!

Which movie(s) was the best in your opinion?

I happen to like all Jack Ryan portrayals. ( Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. )

However, my favorite character is John Clark, and the only one whose done justice to him is Liev Schreiber. William Defoe was an abomination beyond words.

Yeah, I liked 'em all too, but I think my favourite movie was Patriot Games, like they said in Jaws 2, this time it's personal

Alec Baldwin for a younger Jack Ryan but Harrison Ford did kick A*S as an older one and it was too personal in Patriot Games.

I don't think Executive Orders could be made, the sight of a plane diving into the Capitol building would bring back too many memories og 9/11.

While Ryan is a Marine, he's main line of work isn't in the field. A better comparison would be Clark vs Bond. Clark wipes the floor w/ the Brits spy guy, no contest.

I thought that exact same thing, when I read it. Brutal and graphic, in some parts. Especially the iron lung bit.

Ouch.

Now that I think on it, it was a stupid question. Different characters, franchises & movies work on different operational realism levels. Bond movies range wildly from like 60% to 10%, while the Ford Ryan flicks are closer to 75 or 80%, so direct comparisons of physical abilities are problematic at best.
If one were to equalize the operational realism of both characters, my guess would be that hand to hand, Ryan might win just on the health factor, he seems to take better care of himself than Bond. Of course, realism aside, Bond would win, because, hey- he's Bond!

Clark>007>Ryan

Agree Without Remorse should be made. Also
cardinal of the Kremlin could be made, set it the original time period. The Prequel to Hunt for Red October, right?

HfRO was a great film - despite Baldwin, I think a better book. Was that Alec's last decent film? And when will he leave America like he promised so mamy times?

No idea why they went with Afleck. Ford sold it, but really was a 45 year old playing a 30 year old.

Remember destroying Congress was BEFORE 9/11.
Clear & Present Danger was the falling off point, when Sherry Lansing stiffed Clancy, and then Clancy gave bigger parts to the character Sherry killed off.

Don't get me started on the "Ryanverse"

Before Firefly, I was heavily into Tom Clancy's work.

AS for the books that could be made in today's climate.

"Rainbow Six"
"Without Remorse"
"Cardinal of the Kremlin"
"Red Rabbit"
"Bear and the Dragon"

Out of the Ryanverse, I'd Say SSN would be a good movie as well as an expanded version of any of the short stories he wrote to go with his military series.

I liked Alex and Harrison in the role, but Ben Affleck was a horrible Jack Ryan.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Rainbox Six would just be a fun movie to watch. Especially with so many rabid anti-human groups about.

Age Liev Schrieber and call in Ray Cruz to continue as Ding Chavez. Rare is it for Hollywierd to get the characters right. THose two really knocked it out as Clark and Chavez.

Schrieber is the right age to play Clark in Without Remorse.

Bourne is badass, but he is not of the body.
Bond & Ryan work within the system.

Still waiting for a less tongue-in-cheek version of Derek Flint myself.

Bourne was within the system, until the system was corrupted and decided to take him out, and then tried to do so. Bond is not that much different, except that he works outside the system sometimes, and then within the system when it is convenient. Much of Bond's outside the system is apparently just to peeve his bosses, or Q.
Bourne is our Bond, and eats Bond for lunch. Bourne and Bond are Agents. Ryan is not an Agent, but an Analyst.

Yeah the Ryan movies are great and whilst they are all good I think Ford wins out (but he did get more of a go at it).
Patiot Games is the best of the bunch, then Red October, Clear And Present then Sum Of All Fears.

My favourite character is the one the great James Earl Jones plays, especially the bit when he shows his ID, stops the button being pressed and says he was never here.

Put Ryan, Bourne, Bond and Flint together and no-one would dare to do anything. That would be a formidable team. As to whether they'd be able to work together.....

Jack Ryan is America’s James Bond? That’s a little sad, but okay. Yeah, I like Jack Ryan, but there’s too much drama and too much politics. James Bond was a covert British assassin. Jack Ryan is a CIA analyst. That’s just kind of a sad comparison. I like all the Jack Ryan movies, but I’m never thought of him as America’s James Bond.

Actually, it's a comparison purely because of the movies where Ford gets to kick ass, he doesn't have a license to kill or anything.

Only one I liked was the HfRO. Other movies were sad and getting sadder as time went by. I like the books, all except Without Remorse, which I was glad to read once but probably will never read again.

I know they're from the small screen but as to an American Bond what about Napolean Solo (Man from UNCLE) or James West (Wild, Wild West)?
