I was about 5 when The Prisoner ran on TV, and one of my earliest childhood memories is of the white bubble "Rover" sucking people in, and their faces pushed against the membrane, trying to get out.

Gave me such nightmares!

Years later, in my twenties (around 1989), I was working in a store at the Westside Pavilion and Patrick McGoohan came in!
I told him about the impact Rover had on me as a child, and he shrugged and said, "Yeah, well, they're still out there!" before strolling off.
How cool is that!

—————————————————

AMC's remaking the series, starring Jim Caviezel & Sir Ian McKellen, and they're streaming the original episodes.

All my adult life I've tried to watch the complete series, but could never get past the third or fourth episodes for some reason (although I've watched the first episode about a dozen times!).

Now I find that the episodes were shown all out of order! (Sound familiar?)
Yet nobody really knows the correct order, it seems. Theories abound.

Kinda hard to believe nobody here ever heard of The Prisoner.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Oh, no, I'm a huge Prisoner fan and I'm sure there are lots more of us around here. It's just that I didn't see this when you originally posted it. Some days there is so much activity that a thread can drop off the homepage pretty quickly and get buried.

I was seventeen the first year CBS ran the show, then IIRC they repeated it the following summer. I've also seen it in syndication a couple of times since then and now own the dvd set, which I treasure almost as much as I do Firefly.

Big fan here as well.
The Village is where we all live. We are all prisoners of our own making. Freedom is a journey, not a destination.
That's what I took from that series as a kid.

Yep a big fan here too.
A show that was way ahead of its time.

I've got the DVDs and have actually visited the village (Portmeirion in north Wales) where the series was filmed. Saw a live chess game being played which was cool and also kinda weird to watch.
No.6's house is a gift shop and it was great trying to spot all the locations and standing on the stone boat.

If you're in the area I recommend visiting.

Awesome show, awesome concept. Too bad about Patrick McGoohan. One of the very few shows I had people record for me. Also Avengers, Dr. Who, Blake's 7 (hard to watch now) Twilight zone. No TV of course.

You are number six. I thought this was a great show. It hass been years since I have seen it. I remember a few episodes and of course the weather balloon that chased him around when he tried to escape.

It's a truly wonderful show: intelligent, bordering on intellectual, brilliant characters in every episode and yet prepared to go utterly mad.

There's a splendid remastered version out now, complete with tonnes of extra features. If you haven't seen the show, it really is worth it. The themes behind the show (how far can we trust the Government, state surveillance, what price privacy, etc, etc) are possibly even more relevant today than they were back then.
