Yikes! That's my kind of marketing!

As an aspiring videographer, I've been forcing myself lately to shoot video of scantily clad young ladies. Or sans clad. It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.

With a cable access TV show, I can broadcast almost anything. Except political cartoons, or antiwar music, or Barack The Magic Negro, which got me banned this week.

Just saw Dollhouse.

What can I say? Echo is a hottie! :) Other than than, I was really pleasantly surprised. I didn't get any negative vibe from any of the main characters (like I did with TSCC).

I liked the story. It's not Firefly, or Firefly-y, even. And with these 'dolls' swapping out personalities all the time, one could wonder how much depth it can really have (character wise). But Echo, at least (apart from being hot; did I already mention that?), acted well and plausible. There was a moment once, inside the Dollhouse, where she kinda walked a bit like River (when River was touching the walls of Mal's boat): that same eye of wonderment and reflection.

All-in-all, I could stand to see a little more.

I'm watching it tonight.

This is a critical episode. I'm hoping the viewership picks up, and it gets decent numbers.

I'll be there. At this point I don't see Dollhouse as a show that will ever grab me by the wossnames like Firefly did (I'm leaving the door wide open for being pleasantly surprised, of course)...but it's still at least potentially better than most shows, and then there's all the usual reasons...like it's Joss and most of us would watch a dramatization of one of his grocery lists if doing so might improve the chances of Firefly's return.

Two random...things, though: After a week's reflection, I've about concluded that the most intriguing character - with the possible exception of Echo herself - was the FBI agent.

The other thing is this: I've seen several references on this site to Joss maybe getting to tell some of the same story(ies) through Dollhouse that he wanted to tell through Firefly. Does that make anybody else feel just a little ambivalent? Like if Joss gets to get these concepts and such out through other vehicles, what use (beside nostalgic love for what might have been) would Joss have for Firefly? I mean, I know he loves the ol' girl...but at the same time, he's not without certain realist tendencies, is he?

It was like that when we got here!

You're right about that. With a show like Dollhouse, very much depends not on the pilot per se, but where you go with it from then. If it will just be a matter of "Doll gets new personality uploaded and is ready for her next assignment," then I can readily see how it has the potential to become no better than, say, Bionic Woman (which I also did like, btw; and starred some major BSG BDH's, as well as our very own Badger; but I weren't in love with it like I was with Firefly).

Could be that this was indeed Joss' intention. And feel free to chalk it off as daftness on my end, but I didn't see anything in the show that made me think he was trying to squeeze Firefly elements in there. Apart perhaps, in the broadest sense, from the existentialist issues both Echo and River are contending with (though Echo not fully yet, but I'm guessing dealing with what the Allia.. erm, Dollhouse folks have done to her, is a likely personality development path for her).

The plot from the second episode is from a movie made in the 30's. They just updated it. Now I won't rest until I find the title of that movie. Looks like overtime at IMdB. Don't think I have much of a chance. I don't remember the name of the film and the actors all date back to the 30's; so how do I trace them?

Gotta put the shoulder to the wheel to find that film.

In the meantime it was well done. At IMdB, someone said there was no continuity in the first episodes because of rewrites, but there they were. So we are going to have to be loyal and watch to keep up with all the plotlines.

the Most Dangerous Game (it was a short story originally)

but really that was NOT the story line of this episode, this was all about Boyd and his bond with Echo, everything else was subplot IMO...

They covered a lot of stuff, about Echo's different personalities (it is obvious she is holding onto this 'shoulder to the wheel' thing)
about Amy Acker's scars
about Paul Ballard's quest
about the mysterious 'Alpha'
but the real emotional arc was all about Boyd and Echo and their mutual commitment to each other.

Thanks embers.
That is the movie I am thinking of.
I probably would never found it on my own.

Yep, it was pretty good. :)

As expected and hoped for, round two weren't just Echo on another assigmnent: that would make our doll dull. Also, would appear Joss found a neat (and necessary) way to develop and deepen our understanding of who Echo is. The, erm, echo of River's "What am I?" seems hard to overlook.

Echo -- and I think I already mentioned this -- is very attractive. And a damn fine actress to boot (or reboot, as the case may be). Still, I hope we get to see some of other 'Actives', well, active. :) For now I'm perfectly happy with Echo, though.

From the get-so I've endeavored to think nothing but good of the show, because Joss, I believe, deserves our support on this. After all, like the man said, "Nothing is good or bad, but thinking makes it so."

Ok, Im probably the only one here who is going to say this...I couldn't watch past the first 5 minutes. I thought it was that bad. I know, I know. But it just felt....fake.

Firefly, Dr. Horrible...they both had heart. They were shows you could get into right away. This...? Not so much.

Well, as Our Mr. Reynolds would say, you gotta see past what she is, and onto what she can be. :)

Firefly was gripping from the first minute, agreed. And fake? Wasn't the lady's first opening line something like: "Nothing here is what it seems?" (boy, if that doesn't jolt Firefly flashbacks...) I think that's part what makes Joss special. At the surface, it may look like something trite and very main-stream: programmable girls for the perfect date, etc. Yawn. But already in the second episode it becomes clear that Joss obviously wants much more with it, and this is not gonna be just a silly show about girl sex toys.

Naturally, you're every bit as entitled to your opinion as everyone else. Still, judging a show inside of five minutes, that seems a mite on the short side. What was it again that Jane Austen said so eloquently? "It is particularly incumbent on those who never change their opinion, to be secure of judging properly at first."

You are quite right. We definitely need to look deep under the surface to find what Joss is doing. :)
