Well, all seem to admit Joss has a fixation on female charaters who can kick butt, oft of teen vintage. I was thinking about the source material for some of this. Can anybody help me fill out a list of female characters who can kick butt? Human mostly, but part feline, wolf, vampire, werewolf are ok, but android or robot are a sub-category, and dependant upon weapons and tools another (like Ripley in Aliens). Witchcraft or magic doesn't count, nor cartoons. This will be from film and TV.
Since I won't be familiar with some of the entries, please mention if they fit one of those categories.

I'll start off with River, Buffy, Catwoman, Batgirl, Aeon Flux, Resident Evil, Witchblade, Underworld, Star Wars, Bionic Women, T:TSCC, Terminator 3, Aliens, Blade Runner, Dark Angel, Ultra Violet, Bones, Blade Trinity, Matrix, Long Kiss Goodnight, Last Legion, LoTR, and King Arthur.

I will add to the list as more are given.

There are other threads here with similar themes, but apparently none of them in the Cinema Forum.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Angelina)
Species
Stargate SG-1 (Amanda Tapping was brainy and kicked ass)

Kelly kicked butt in Weird Science?
Don't remember a Lindsey in Abyss -ed. don't recall her kicking any butt. You sure? Who's butt did she kick?
I thought the Starship Troopers chicks were weapons-dependant like Ripley.
Didn't know Jolene was a butt kicker in Enterprise.
Didn't think of anybody in Road Warrior as butt kicking except Mel.

You're right Kelly used a gun
Lindsey used some non-weapon to knock out one of the Marines
You're probably right about Starship Troopers-I can't remember if there was any martial arts type butt kicking
Jolene definitely did some martial arts type stuff

They all received the same training as the men, and had to meet the same performance requirements, armed and unarmed.

I believe T'pal was a trained martial artist, but I don't recall ever seeing her make use of it in actual combat. She did however shoot a few folk in various episodes.

Yeah, Starship Troopers didn't seem to have much butt-kicking of anybody there, and unless Jolene did some, not that impressive.
But I'll try to fit in the others as I get the details.
Thanks, and keep them coming, and tell me which are not really fitting. I wouldn't have included Barbarella - maybe as cartoon, but not as Hanoi Jane.

Are those BSG chicks humans?

I'll go with bridget Fonda as Le Femme Nikita.

Is Jen Garner a butt kicker in Alias?

Well, are we? The series implied that we are descendants of Cylons/human hybrids.

I'll go with bridget Fonda as Le Femme Nikita.

T'Pol was a former Vulcan Intelligence Agent (with all the Black Ops Badassitude that entails).

And off the top of my head, she went hand-to-hand with a few Klingons (consecutively, not all at once) in one episode (after demonstrating on Travis as a sparring partner).

I recall being surprised by how little she used the nerve pinch --I only recall her using it on fellow crewmen who were under hostile influence (i.e., people who needed to be kept alive). She clearly wasn't the technical pacifist Spock was.

All these ladies are weapons-familiar to some extent or another, but I wouldn't call them weapons-dependent. They are all at least primarily human, with the possible exception of Ziva David, who I suspect may belong to some category of angel or similar celestial being.

Even Purdey (Joanna Lumley) in the New Avengers could kick butt.

Actually, Lumley is still kicking butt today: I don't know what she did to this guy off camera, but he's obviously been broken:

Okay, back the truck up. Padme/Amidala is a butt kicker but Ripley is weapons dependent? Padme used a gun in Episode 1, and fought a bit in Episode 2. In 3 she whined a lot and died.

Ripley didn't have much for weapons in Alien - she managed to survive when everyone else was killed, and killed the alien by blowing it out the airlock. In Aliens she took over the whole outfit, drove in to rescue to Marines when the Lieutenat had a meltdown, defended herself and Newt when a face crawler thingy attacked them... the list goes on. She only uses weapons at the end, and even then, she kills the queen using a loader and the airlock once again.

Sorry - I love Ripley. Didn't mean to rant

Does Jennifer Garner kick butt in Alias? Hell yeah, and she rarely uses a gun.

Starbuck in the new BSG is human. And kicks all kind of ass.

I would add Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) from Chuck, and Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss) from The Matrix.

I believe VeraSamuels mis-typed. Black Canary is a DC comics character that has been in several series; Justice League, Smallville, Birds of Prey, Arrow, etc.

If she was talking about two characters from Watchmen, they would be Silk Spectre 1 and 2, played by Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman respectively.

You saying she was actiony as Silk Spectre 1?
She did a bit in Sin City. What else?

I never saw the short lived show, but she played the title character in Karen Sisco.
That was based on the US Marshall played by Jennifer Lopez in the movie Out of Sight.
She tussled a bit in that movie.
