The year was 1994, two years after the show's cancellation.
Mac was lifted right out of the show & placed in these two TV movies that had little to do with the original series except for the main character. And know what? It worked.
Indy & Bond-Light, thanks to Richard Dean Anderson.

Pure cheesy fun, and my Son even likes the longer hair carried over from season 5 (not that he had anything against the full-on mid-series mullet).

I only ever saw one of the movies. The one with the nuclear bomb I think. May have been set in London and it had the pretty, cute girl from Highlander (MacLeod's first wife) in it.
Don't ever remember seeing the other one although I knew it was around.

Macgyver was one of those shows which I liked but nobody else around me did. My mates all thought it was silly and couldn't see that it was kind of the point of the show in that it wasn't taking itself too seriously.
Plus RDA has a certain charm and personality (and sense of humour) that makes him always watchable. I think he's one of the main reasons why Stargate SG1 was such a success from the start.

Aside from being cheesy fun, how do the movies hold up these days?

I've been thinking for a while about watching some of the old pilot episodes from 80's TV shows that I liked back then. Thought I'd see if they're still as good as I remember and then watch the full series if they are.

I already have Airwolf, Miami Vice and Street Hawk. My brother is more into it than me as he has ALL The Incredible Hulk, Knight Rider, The Fall Guy, Dukes Of Hazzard, TJ Hooker and more.

After your post I downloaded the MacGyver pilot overnight and have just watched it. It's still brilliant and doesn't seem particularly dated except for some of the tech. RDA was great in that way that only he is.
I'm now going to get the rest of the series and will look forward to watching it.

Remington Steele was also a fave- I got season two (my favourite season) on DVD.

FYI: Season four was the coolest one from the research I've done, but in season five, they ended the narration that I liked so much. Season five is also where the series begins to feel a bit recycled as well. Don't get me wrong, any MacGyver is good MacGyver, just be prepared for the change in tone after four.

Consider me warned about season five.
I think I had stopped watching by or during season five of it's original run, although I can't remember why I stopped. Maybe for the reasons you stated of recycled plots and no narration. I always liked the narration as well. It added to the show in the same way that Michael's VO does in Burn Notice - it wouldn't be the same without it.

Yeah, I dropped off at that point as well (1989), the charm had been reduced & replaced with a more standard TV-type narrative.
I was an infrequent viewer after that, but still enough of a fan to catch the last eps, and the TV movies.
And MAN did Mac's hair get long!
