For me, this is an easy choice.
Moonraker.
One of the better books twisted into an unrecognizable mess of pop-culture sci-fi ripoff & tongue-in-cheek nonsense. It made the the 60's Flint movies look rather serious by comparison.

What's YOUR call?

My second choice is Die Another Day, which started out deadly-serious, then degenerated into utter foolishness with an invisible car, a big bad living in an ice castle, & Bond swimming in FREEZING water (and not getting hypothermia).
Oh, and the Diamonds Are Forever ripoff with a killer laser, and the Logan's Run ripoff with a fight amongst surgical laser beams...

So sad that Brosnan's otherwise excellent run should end like this.
He must have been jinxed.

Die Another Day was a bit naff, I'd have to say that was one of my least favourites. I liked some of the car chase stuff though, if I remember right I'd been playing a lot of Stuntman(PS2) when I saw that.

A View To A Kill was another suckfest that really should have been better, given the talent...
Christopher Walken squandered... who would have thought?

And Live & Let Die... great boat chase, excellent Bond girl (Jane Seymour), best Felix (David Hedison)- all to be lost on the *STUPIDIST* kill of a big bad ever...
*POP* goes the movie.

I personally think that the James Bond films, much as I enjoy them one and all, suffered more than one instance of being too closely linked to the decade/era they were released in, with 1979's Moonraker tapping into the space battle craze that Star Wars: A New Hope started in earnest 2 years earlier.

And I have to say that I had high hopes for Die Another based on it's start with Bond getting capture and imprisoned, but the attempt to do a darker 21st century Bond got frittered away when they switched gears to make a cinematic version of a money-saving clip show! Aston Martin sports coupe with a completely insane trick to it? Evil villain using laser-armed satellites? Insane enemy hideout in some remote or exotic location?

I have to give it to Duran Duran for the most original theme song in quite a while. And once upon a time...well..they were my band.
I am anxious to see some of the really early Bond movies. Made a few years before I was born. The first movie was in 1966 or '67. Yes?

Dr. No- 1962...

Moonraker actually is my favorite. But that's because it was the first theatrical movie my Dad brought me to. I know what a crappy Bond movie it is...

My worst five list, in no particular order:

Die Another Day
A View to a Kill
Diamonds Are Forever*
Moonraker

The Man with the Golden Gun

*ETA: I actually meant to put You Only Live Twice.
I can't really explain it, but I guess it was a bit too over the top for me.

What about "Licence To Kill" or "The Living Daylights"? They were pretty bad and have got nothing to save them like "Live And Let Die" has got that awesome theme song.

Nuh-uh!

Alright, I'll admit that it ain't that bad. But it is the worst of the Connery films.

Are you marathoning the whole series, Chrisiall?

WHAT???
I submit that there ARE no bad Connery films, but I will say that DAF is better than You Only Live Twice. They didn't dress up a 6'2" bodybuilder to look like a small Japanese fella in Diamonds...

Dr. No---> Goldfinger---> Thunderball---> Diamonds Are Forever---> Tomorrow Never Dies. I have On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Goldeneye & The World Is Not Enough, but they seem a tad too 'adult' for him at this time.
Maybe next month.

Never Say Never? Yes, I know that doesn't count. Thank God.

And Gorramit...I was confusing DAF with You Only Live Twice for some damn reason.

Its hard to explain my reasoning but I expect a Connery movie to be Great! so when it isn't it seems really bad. A Moore movie is expected to be a bit cheesy and not so serious, so when one is actually pretty good (For Your Eyes Only), it really stands out.

You gonna start a "best action sequence/stunt" thread? I'm thinking about it but don't want to step on your toes...

As much as I want to like it (at the time it was a welcome relief from Moore), it's not very good. It's better than Moonraker & View To a Kill...

Y'know Chris, I'm not absolutely sure but I think I'm feeling a anti-Moore vibe from you...

Do you like any of the Moore films? I think that For Your Eyes Only and The Spy Who Loved Me were pretty good and put them alongside an average Connery movie. The others? Not so much.

And I guess I need to justify my fondness for Moore. He is the Bond I grew up with and until the advent of VCRs (Sundays was a no TV night for my family), he was what Bond was supposed to be. That has changed, of course. But he still is a fun and fond part of growing up for me.

A bit late to the party aren't I?

Well the worst for me is easily Die Another Day.
Worst theme, worst car, worst 'big name' guest role.
This would be followed by Moonraker who's one saving grace over DAD is that it didn't have Hagdonna in it.
A View To A Kill would be next although I really like the theme to this and consider it one of the best themes.

And I'm picky about this but Never Say Never Again will never count as a Bond movie IMO in the same way that Niven's Casino Royale won't either because neither is official. Plus NSNA is a remake, they could have at least made something up rather than do a re-do.

If CIA is against Moore then I'm with him. They're fun movies but Moore never seemed like a real James Bond to me. I do have a soft spot for The Spy Who Loved Me, it was the Lotus that first got me interested in Bond movies, up until then I'd ignored them.
Plus Live And Let Die has the best Bond theme with Dr No (i.e. the main James Bond Theme) coming a very very close second.

George Lazenby.
Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Maybe it was so bad you all forgot to remember how bad it was.

I bought DAD on DVD the day it came out having missed it in the theatre.
I sold it to the used CD/DVD store the next day.
Yeah, I can easily say there has never been a worse Bond movie. At least Moonraker KNEW it was tongue in cheek.

Care to share your reasons for why On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the poorest of the 22 official James Bond films, jewelstaitefan? Did George Lazenby's take on Bond leave you cold? Plot seemed too fantastic, even for a Bond film? James Bond getting hitched too out there? I'm honestly curious

I thought it was one of the better films, actually.
Telly Savalas wouldn't be my FIRST choice for Blofeld, but hey- whatever.
