America loves a winner!

The Hobbit is such a different sort of story than LOTR. I'm thrilled it's FINALLY a go, and I trust ( HOPE ) Ian McKellan (rumored ) and Christopher Lee ? - will be included.
According to IMDB, the characters from LOTR appearing in The Hobbit include Elrond (Hugo Weaving ),Gollum ( Andy Serkis ),Galadriel ( Kate Blanchette )

Curiously, the wizard, Radagast The Brown, is credited in the 2 parts of The Hobbit, though he was only mentioned by name in all of the stories of the Ring.

Well, my hope is that they get Smaug right, hoo boy I loved that scene, cause Smaug was every bit as vain, obnxious, and yet frightening, as a dragon really is - as I recall he talked some EPIC smack in the animated one.

But then, they did such an excellent job on Treebeard, I think it's quite possible they might pull it off.

A dragon is NOT just a big lizard, too many filmmakers roll with that, and it just demeans it - if you aint *quakin in your seat*, it just ain't done right.

I'll admit that my current knowledge of the books is a little dated as I haven't read them for many years and I'll stand to be corrected if this is wrong but....

I thought Radagast featured in one story where he met up with Gandalf? It may have been in one of the appendices. I know the two blue wizards were never seen and only mentioned. And I may be confusing matters further but I thought it was Radagast that helped Gandalf escape from Orthanc by sending the eagles to him after Gandalf contacted him with that little insect/bird. This may be the bit where he gets a mention.
Can anyone clear it up for definite?

I too am really looking forward to seeing these movies and being back in Middle Earth. It is a fantastic story that appeals to all ages. Personally I'm looking forward to seeing Riddles In he Dark and the spiders in Mirkwood.

Yeah, you're drawing from info from the appendices, mostly. In fact, I'm trying now to recall if Radagast was even mentioned at all in the Ring stories proper. My best guess would be that he did get mentioned in The Hobbit, but it's been a few years since I've re-read it.

I've read The Hobbit and LOTR trilogy several times over. I was interested to find that Christopher Lee was such a fan of Tolkien, that he'd re-read his books constantly, over the years, and long before the movies were started. He had hoped to play the part of Gandalf. While Ian McKellan did a great job, Lee actually fits more into the image I've always had for Gandalf. Kinda wish they had reversed their roles, but oh well.

I did a little more research afer my last post and ended up on wikipedia (yeah I know, not the most accurate) and apparently Radagast does appear in LOTR and Unfinshed Tales and is mentioned in The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.
Saruman never liked Radagast and in Fellowship uses him to lure Gandalf to Orthanc. Later Radagast sends Gwahir of the eagles to Orthanc with news for Saruman and Gwahir instead rescues Gandalf. The little insect thing is apparently a movie invention.

I remember an interview on TV from many many years ago (the early 80s) with Christopher Lee talking about the Hammer movies. I had just finishing a reading The Two Towers and he mentioned then that he liked the works of Tolkien, although I never knew that they'd met each other until the LOTR movies came out. Even back then I always thought he'd make a good Saruman. Never saw him as Gandalf although I think I can see what you're getting at.

As a slightly off point when I saw Forever Young with Mel Gibson and Elijah Wood I thought that Elijah looked a lot like a real version of the animated Frodo from Bakshi's LOTR. I always thought he should play him if they ever did a live action version. You can imagine my amazement when his name was announced for the films.

Geeze! when was the last LOTR film released? Its got to be five or six years now,...and I agree with the statement about dragons,...Hollyweird doesn't do them right at all.

DAMN ole Smaug could talk some smack, couldn't he ?
Gotta give it to Bilbo too, he played it smart, dragons are vain as hell, and quite fond of riddles and puzzles, lording their intellect over the puny mortals, and Bilbo took full advantage.

He did get kinda stupid at the end, taunting a dragon is ALWAYS a bad idea.
