My best guess would be that he did get mentioned in The Hobbit, but it's been a few years since I've re-read it. I've read The Hobbit and LOTR trilogy several times over. I was interested to find that Christopher Lee was such a fan of Tolkien, that he'd re-read his books constantly, over the years, and long before the movies were started. He had hoped to play the part of Gandalf. While Ian McKellan did a great job, Lee actually fits more into the image I've always had for Gandalf. Kinda wish they had reversed their roles, but oh well.
