America loves a winner!

Never once thought of seeing it in the theatre, or even renting it.

And yeah, it wasn't.....well, it wasn't good.

But I've seen worse. A lot worse.

Marky Mark errr.. Mark Wahlberg wasn't horrible, but his part sure was. He did with it what he could, imo.

And Zooey... mmmm. Always nice to see her perty face in close up.

Does anyone know if there's a protest group out there against naming characters Zoey? I know I know we've got a Zoe of our own, but really it's the most overused name in cinema. I don't know if they think it's unique or that it won't offend anyone cause there are really only two actual people in the world named Zoe or what. They're freaking everywhere these days in movies and TV. Whether it's supposed to be unique or PC it's just dumb. Just use a normal name. Sheesh.

That being said what's her name is really good looking in the movie. I really like her hair like that. It was the only good thing about the movie.

That is her real name.Zooey Dashenelle.

In the movie, her character's name was Alma.

Not real sure what your issue is.

I know of the characters by that name -

Zoe Washburn

Zoe Carter

Zoe Graystone.

I'm guessing there are more, but that 3 " Zoes ", in sci fi shows, does seem a bit much.

I get 33 matches of characters named Zoe on imdb just in the 2000's. 9 more for Zoey. That seems like a lot to me.

That it does.

I was unaware of its popularity. Interesting.

Good to hear - I just ordered it from Amazon yesterday. I saw a bit when I was flipping through the channels and saw that weird wood beast-thing and thought, "what the hell is this??" It didn't look like anything else I'd seen, in a good way.

So you're saying they should use the name of Zoe/Zoey less?
Why isn't it a normal name?

My opinion would be that most writers want a name that is easy to remember for viewers so they pick common names, just like most sensible parents. Occasionaly someone comes along who wants something a little different so they pick a name like Zoe. It's still easy to remember but isn't hugely common either. At least they're not naming their characters like some 'star's name their kids.

And I did a couple of searches on IMDB using names that I thought would be overused and came up with these results. This is just for the straight name and DOESN'T include variations like Ann, Annie, Katie, Katherine etc:

Kate = 326 characters
Anna = 340 characters
Sarah = 439 characters

That's a lot of characters with these names.

I too liked The Village although I gather it's a bit of a minority group to be in.
As for The Happening is was a pile of rubbish. I felt sorry for the actors as they have both shown that they can act but when you are given nothing to work with what can you do. I have wind more powerful than that film.

Well personally I don't know a single person named Zoe in real life. I know a bunch of Kates, Annas and Sarahs. I don't see anything wrong with choosing realistic names that you might encounter normally.

Another point about my imdb search. They have 43 total Zoe characters. If 33 are from 2000 on that means that there were only 10 in the entire TV & movie history before the year 2000. That just makes it show even more how it's just a trendy name that writers think is hip to use for some reason. The problem is that everyone is using it. It's not original when everybody does it. Then it just becomes annoying.

That was already answered - writers will lean toward what stands out, rather than the generic. Regardless of whether or not you know anyone with that name.

Also, it's generally frowned upon in scriptwriting to have characters with names that start the same. So, generally, only one character with an "A" name, one with a "K" name and so on. Not a lot of overlap with a "Z" name.

Go back and read it again. You're clearly wrong if there are 43 Zoes and 326 Kates. Apparently they don't lean toward what stand out at all.

At the same time when they do try to pick something that stands out they are picking the same name everyone else uses. Which means it isn't standing out.

So, if they're trying to stand out then they're failing and need to find something original that will actually stand out. That's the point.

Also on the actual topic, The Village wasn't awful IMO. It did actually come off as creepy quite a bit when I saw it. The acting wasn't very good though IMO.

Jeez, pedantic much? My point wasn't that every writer will use it.

This is the dumbest conversation I've been in in ages. Who cares about your silly hang ups on names?

I get 11 matches for partial results on characters named River.

That's not worthy of a protest, is it?

Probably not, unless it was all in a couple years' time.

So you didn't like Happening, and won't check out The Village.
Have you seen Lady in the Water, or Signs?

Not a sci-fi, but the best story I've seen on film in a long time was "The Secret in Their Eyes" which I just picked up from Redbox. Subtitled, Spanish, takes place in Argentina, no action, either. I'd be interested to hear if anybody doesn't like it. After some reflection, I wanted to watch some Firefly, but finding all my sets are loaned out, I watched Green Mile again instead.

Haven't seen Lady, but did see Signs. Signs was a bit better ( more watchable ) than The Happening, but not by much.

Noted on TSITE. I'll keep it in mind.

Green Mile as a Firefly substitute?

Huh.

I'd have gone a different way. Like a Riddick movie, or The 5th Element.....

In terms of "A really good story captured on film/DVD" Firefly was a top choice, and barring that, Green Mile outshone my copies of Riddick, Transporter, 5th Element. I had just repeatedly viewed my newest version of Galaxy Quest, which I must admit did not have quite the depth of story, although a very good story it was.

Speaking of which, have the GQ fans acquired the 2009 Deluxe Edition, with all the deleted scenes and interviews with the cast in 2009, 10 years after the film was made? Well worth it, to me.

What Would Mal do ?

Signs was quite good..a bit dark with his wife..but that's MKS. own it

Unbreakable was a cool story line...slow directing..but good movie overall. own it

Village..cool story...scarey in parts...lousy directing of long standing actors..when I see someone like Sigourney suck that bad..I know I've got to blame the director....thought about owning it

Lady - um...sorry I spent the money and 2 hrs of my life that I can never recover.. I mean I had been waiting to see Opey's daughter in something less than a dress from the little house on the prairie wardrobe box..nice enough legs...but nuttin to hit the pause button over...

Happening...WTF !?! he pushed me so far away from anything with his name on it...sick..stupid..slow...sick....I didn't get it at all...other than to be disgusted by the graphics of it all...kept waiting for it to get better and kept thinking..no..he won't actually show the next scene..he'll leave something to our imagination right?...uh...nope.

Heck, I didn't even know there was another edition released...off to Amazon I go! Theres a few movies I don't mind double dipping for and this is one of them. Thanks!

It's funny, I avoided GQ at first because I wasn't a big Tim Allen fan...but I finally got forced into seeing it and it is now one of my favorite movies.

So, did anyone watch M. Night's Airbender movie?
