America loves a winner!

Somehow, I missed this one. Is this a prequel, to the current XMen stories, or a complete reboot ?

Yep, seemed like that from the trailer. I'm really out of the loop here though... I guess my question is...

Are we caring about this ?

I'm inclined to think so, but lack of info leaves me a bit suspicious here. Any fan boy type info would be helpful.

Sarcasm?

I'm not caring about First Class. It sounds like it pretty much departs from the comics and might as well be an alternate universe. No Scott, Gene, Bobby or Warren in the "first class"? Oh but at least they brought in Scott's brother...wait no he's not going to be his brother cause who cares about continuity, right? Apparently Xavier is a young horny version of himself. The whole thing just sounds ridiculous.

I'll wait for them to sell the rights to X-men over to Marvel studios. They seem to be the only ones who can do Marvel comics any justice.

I'm caring about this! As long as it has Professor X in it I care about this, he's my favorite one in X Men movies, him and Magnito, so I'll eagerly watch.

Agreed. This "first class" is NOT the first X-Men and seems a mix of several generations of teams and is totally out of continuity.

mm well at least they finally bothered to introduce Pixie. she is one of the 'lesser' Xmen, but is still a great character. if we're very, very lucky, we might even get more than a walk through of Jubilee, but I doubt it.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that Patrick Stewart isn't playing Professor X? That would be _really disappointing for me since he's the whole reason I got interested in it in the first place. I like it now for more than just him, any story with meta-humans in it is cool, but no Patrick Stewart? Even a cameo would be nice.

Seems highly unlikely that there will even be a cameo. It's set in the 60's. Xavier isn't even in a wheelchair in this one. Unless they do some weird cut to the future or have him play Xavier's father, I just can't see a cameo happening.

Im looking forward to it. Ive liked all of Vaughns movies so far, liked most of the X-Men movies so far (only really disliking Wolverine) and like the cast. I have no particular attachment to any of the characters in this one, but that's fine. I don't mind a mostly new set of characters.

The continuity is a bit wonky with Mystique and Emma Frost, but I can live with that (it being particularly easy to do with Mystique.... Frost's age makes no damned sense - she was 16 fifteen years later in Wolverine - but I'll live).

But I'm about 10 year past worrying that it doesn't follow the (overly convoluted) comics continuity.

And I like the period setting. The visuals have looked great in the trailers (though the print campaign has been terrible). I'll definitely check it out.

Given that it's set about 40 years before she'd be born...

Strange that you seem upset about continuity with another medium, and then want them to do things in the film that would be completely out of continuity with the actual films... And Havok is Cyclops' brother in this, just older instead of younger... to fit the film continuity. Sure, they're waaaaay off the comics at this point, but I personally prefer that the films hold on their own, and not just es extensions of the comics.

And FOX keeps the rights as long as they keep making any X-related movies. Marvel doesn't have the option to take them back unless Fox lets them.

I don't know if the movies can be considered to have a "continuity" when they break it so much already. We've already had like 3 different aged kittys and other similar issues. That's why I'm giving up on the ones produced by Fox. They're clearly not concerned with these issues and they drive me bonkers. So, I'm more or less done with them.

If they reboot and turn over a new leaf then maybe I'll consider giving them a second chance. However, I expect their next movie will have Wolverine flying and shooting projectile claws at the rate they're crapping on the X-men.

Unless it's change Singer apparently said they're not brothers. http://movies.ign.com/articles/114/1149195p1.html

Kitty was played by three actresses, sure, but she seemed the same age, or a natural progressing of age, in all three. So I don't see a problem there.

They've botched the ages on Cyclops and Emma, but that's all I really see as a huge inconsistancy in the continuity of the films.

Hmmm, I can't open IGN links from work, but according to the dude playing Havok, he is his brother:

But I'm also seeing the character called both Alex Summers and Alex Winters in various places. So who knows.

Well I'll probably see it eventually because its X Men, one of the few comic-based stories that I actually like. But I can't say I'm super excited without at least a cameo from Patrick Stewart. I liked the Wolverine movie, and it had a little cameo at the end. Maybe this one could be told from old Professor X looking back at his young manhood. that would be cool, but no one else understands life like I do so I don't think that will occur to them.

I thought Wolverine was enjoyable. Now I preface that with saying that I've never read the comics so I don't really have a problem with continuity issues. But I understand the idea of being frustrated when continuity issues come up, it makes me feel like the author/producer/director thinks that the audience is stupid and won't notice so its okay to fudge details. that is indeed annoying. So I can see why it bothers a lot of people.

To me they are saying they think the source material is stupid and they know better. Well if that's the case then leave the source material to someone who appreciates it. I know a paycheck is a paycheck but I don't have to like it.

Changes are necessary for an adaptation, and X-Men continuity from the comics is massively convoluted, so I don't mind deviations from comic continuity at all. Messing up the continuity between films is just lazy as hell though.

With Wolverine, the continuity stuff was annoying, but not a deal breaker. It was the incredibly shoddy and hackneyed script that killed that movie for me.

I understand that, but to use that excuse that actually needs to be the reason for the change. I don't see why they need Emma Frost in the role she's in for this movie. I don't see why they need Havok as a member of the first class. I don't see why Moyra McTaggert can't be Scottish for the movie.

They seem to have made changes without necessity.

To me a necessary change is ditching the Shi'ar from the Phoenix storyline in X3. Changing the Phoenix to Jean's inherent mutation not so much but it's borderline and I can let it slide. Including Juggernaut without any mention of his relation to Xavier and then not giving him any real role in the film is not acceptable. They didn't need him in the film. So, they didn't need to change his continuity. It was just shoddy story telling.

That's where the line is for me at least. I'm sure it's different for everyone.

Id say that just comes down to needed some known mutants, but most of the big names are used up. And who knows - maybe they just fit the actual story.

As for Juggernaut, not being a big fan of the character anyway, I thought he worked fine. Given that in the comics he's not a mutant, and they don't have a component in place for that in the movies, and Ive never really read a story where his relation to Xavier had much bearing on the plot, it worked for me.

Apparently he is a mutant. I thought that too and then it annoyed me that the mutant cure was a danger to him. So, I went to read up on it and it sounds like he just had a dormant x-gene that was activated by magic. I thought his powers were all magical.

So, then my question is what's the point of using known characters if you're going to go and change the character? Having just some random big strong mutant would be fine by me.

Hadn't heard that. I wonder if it was a ret-con that came along after I had stopped reading the comics.

Two things there. One, a random big guy isn't the Juggernaught, who has been in cartoons, video games, and other non-comics media for decades, and is one of the X-Men villains to most consistently appear in non-X-Men comics to boot - so has a LOT more recognition.

And two, I don't see there being all that much change to the character - especially in light of that info you just shared. The magic angle doesn't fit with the movies, so that seems just as natural of a change as nixing aliens from the Phoenix story. His character was essentially unchanged. Changes to his backstory are at worst implied - and never spelled out explicitly, so I really don't see much change at all. The core of the character is there, only the minutae that had no bearing on the plot of the film was ignored.

Unless one is just a huge Juggernaught fan - I don't see the big deal with those changes at all.

Good call on Wolvie - ya didn't miss anything.

I wouldn't apply that logic to First Class though. New writers, a director with experience in the genre who was given more control (Wolvie director Gavin Hood had never done action, and was removed from the film several times during shooting) and many of the producers have been replaced. And it's getting pretty decent advanced buzz, whereas the word on Wolvie was rather toxic far in advance.

Dunno, but the more I see of this ( via trailers ) , the less intrigued I am.

Might be cause I'm not all that well versed in original X Men, the characters, etc...

I'll still go see it, though.

Anyone actually catch this flick yet? Been told by a semi-x-fan that it was good... and more importantly better than Wolverine. How could it not?

I was harsh on the X films and can appreciate them a lil more now. The ending of 1 and 3 made my brain explode. ...and well, Wolvie, it destroyed the brain containment unit I later aquired after the first incident. I mean super Ryan Reynolds (i do not even care what he was actually called in the film, weapon x something I am sure). Gimme a break!!!! WE do not need some "super" battle to make wolvie cool/bad assed/awesome, etc! I'd rather have him fighting normals in great numbers than that.

I am hoping this film will at least have a good script/plot/acting. ...and yes I saw the glaring continuity issues just from the trailer. Give me something to believe in.

Wloverine origins was on tv again. Still strikes me as to how the time line got shredded in the 2 movies...

Xavier gets crippled in the early 60's, but can walk again in the late 70's, among other things.

While watching Wolverine, halfway through I suddenly realized that I needed a beer. Then another. Then another.
It still sucked.

Ha, ha. A beer! That's what I should have done! Sat and watched it with my nieces and nephews and even they weren't impressed.
Not a fan of the X-men films in terms of a saga but I did enjoy the third one for some reason?
Just out of curiosity are they called 'X-men' because they're Xavier's men/women?

No. Supposedly X is the "X for unknown" (as in solve for). The gene that causes the mutations is an unknown gene or X gene.

I watched it fer free the other day...I thought it was mildly entertaining( and free didn't hurt! ). Acting wasn't anything to celebrate or whinge about. There were some definate cheeeeezy parts, but some fun parts as well.
I haven't seen Wolverine...and I'm not sure I want to. I think the group action is half the fun.

I miss Gambit. He was my fav...Mon Chere...

Thanks for that Wish. Figured I was being a little simplistic about that. Cheers.
