I feel like Mal looking up at that chandelier watching Beowulf. I understand how they made the movie (they story is interesting and worth seeing) But I just don't get why they decided to use CGI for the whole movie. It seems like you could have made the same movie with shooting the actors on film. Am I the only one that feels this way?

I saw this in IMAX 3D. The visual experience was breathtaking. I probably won't be buying the DVD because there is no way it will recreate the theatre experience but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie. Sure, they took some liberties with the story but what movie doesn't nowadays?

I think the converse of that is that, if you have a film that is going to have CGI in every scene anyway and where you want the human characters to fight, ride and get seduced by the CGI monsters then why not do it with motion capture?

(And although there isn't a monster in every scene - think of all the sets they'd have had to build).

Plus, of course, the film involved various characters getting their kit off - and the great thing with CGI is that you don't run the risk of the Great American Public catching a traumatising glimpse of Beowulf's dangly bits or Mummy Grendel's nipples!

Possibly, though, they went *too* realistic - giving the film a more unreal feel may have been effective - as it is in "A Scanner Darkly" (which was live action processed to look like animation).

They refer to that as the "uncanny valley". the closer animation comes to being lifelike, the harder it is for the human mind to accept it, because the closer the animatin gets to real life, the more the little nuances that animation gets wrong stand out. No one has yet been able to cross that "valley".

As for the why of doing it, as someone said above, just to try it. Zemekis has been experimenting with useing technology in film for a while now. Now, this wasn't perfect by any means, but it was a huge step forward for that medium. Another aspect that makes it appealing, is that the actors can play someone else entirely. Ray Winstone performed all of Beowulf's action, but he's a fat guy in his 50's. There is no way that he would have been beleivable in the role himself, even though I thought he did a great job.

The making-of on the DVD is very interesting. Even if you don't care for the animation style, it's interesting seeing how they did it.

I went and saw the 300 and was disappointed in that film so I stayed away from Beowolf. When a seven foot tall Xerxes showed up in the 300 I had about enough of that movie. I think I laughed.
