My memory of the mid-eighties is a little hazy (college, you know

), so my recollection of V from back then (the only time I saw it) is that the first mini-series was absolutely excellent, except that it kinda ended on a cliffhanger, the second one was action-packed, but had a kind of silly ending, and the series was so cheaply done as to be basically a waste of time.

Are these memories accurate?

I keep seeing V & V: The Final Battle at stores for nice, low prices, and I feel totally tempted (except for the series...).

Help me, my peeps! Would I be wasting my time/coin going for one or both mini-series?

Also, how is the new series doing? I can't see it 'cause I don't have cable...

Yes, they are.

No you wouldn't - but if yer gonna go for it, get both, they really weren't half bad for the budget they were on, especially the second mini-series.

Don't bother with the TV series, it was abysmal.

Oh, and you forgot the awesomeness of the rebellions own WMD prior to the Red Dust...

I give you Ham Tyler, master covert operations, communications, and bad relations.

I loved this guy, he actually ENJOYED the fact that everyone hated his guts.

Hell, half the best dialogue involves him somehow, lol.

I was probably at the right age to watch V back in the day. 13. I remember it being totally awesome! I loved the plot and I remember my brother and I watching it together late at night. It really added to the atmosphere!
The characters were great! Michael Ironside in particular but also Diane and Elias! Elias was my favourite - I remember him particularly because he was the hero who didn't want to be a hero. There was genuine conflict in that character.

Anyway I bought them about three years ago. And I still love them! Granted It's more out of heavy nostalgia but still there is enough going on in there that you can overlook the now dodgey effects. And really they are way better than the curent V being shown - which is so rigid you just don't care about the characters (at least I don't)

The TV series that followed was for most of the time a let down. Except for the actress who played Elizabeth. She was gorgeously sweet!

Anyway be interested in what you decide. My instinct is that they'll not quite do it for you.

Hey Chris.
I have both mini-series and the TV series.

V: The Mini-series is easily the best and will always stand up well despite it's onvious dated look these days. I really like The Fnal Battle as well, probably more so than some others. I believe at this point it is where it left Kenneth Johnsons hands and the plot was changed.
The TV series on other hand is pretty bad. It's not terrible but it doesn't hold up too well. Lots of bad overacting and terrible plots.

I kinda like the new show. It has some great bits in amongst the poorer stuff. Sometimes I do wonder why I watch it though. I think it may be because it's V, if it didn't have the name attached then I wonder bother. But it's not all bad.
I'd wait and see what happens to the show, see how it ends especially knowing that you don't like unfinished endings. It may not get past it's shortened second season and it depends what they do with that.

I have a slightly different opinion than most.

Don't buy them. Don't rent them. Don't watch them. Just let your memories be--because your memories are much better than the reality of it.

Having said that, if you simply can't resist, go whole hog and watch the entire saga.

The original miniseries has, arguably the best concept, but the execution is, in my opinion, quite poor. Very little actually HAPPENS. Despite the heavy topic and potential for nuance, the plot itself is very slight. It could be that I've been spoiled by seasons and seasons of Whedon, Abrams, and even Carter, but when I re-watched the original mini-series a year or two ago, I was struck by how little WEIGHT there was to the story and action. If it were done today, the entire miniseries would probably be done in a standard length episode.

The second miniseries suffers by being in the middle. It's a better story, with more substance, but in some ways stands on its own better than as a sequel, in that it disregards some stuff from the original miniseries and has some lame twists that seem to be set-up for an ongoing series.

The series, I think, is far better than most people give it credit for. The style changes significantly twice, and unfortunately gets worse each time. The first iteration is very interesting and well-done, but unfortunately ends abruptly when the story changes direction. The series gives the writers the opportunity to explore some of the depth that the two miniseries gloss over, but they never get to settle for too long. Still, I would argue that the first 6 episodes or so are far superior to either miniseries in terms of story (although the special effects budget is terrible).

Ultimately, though, I would say don't pick the scabs of your memories. Just let it be a fondly remembered half-truth.

RIVERLOVE

Original V movie had many great characters on both sides. When it aired it seemed fairly real, and when resistance fighters started dying, the emotional connections became more intensified.

V The Final Battle was extremely exciting to watch when it came back. It was like a gift from ABC. I thought it was great, and the introduction of Ham Tyler made it more real and better. The ending seemed hurried to me, but it was satisfying nonetheless.

V The Series was another gift from ABC. There were good and bad episodes, and I felt it could have gone on a bit longer when it got cancelled quite abruptly. Blair Tefkin, who would give birth to the half-Visitor baby, became somewhat of a cultural icon at the time, and she was seen in Fast Times at Ridgemont High doing her best Pat Benatar wannabee act.
