I`ve just recieved a copy of this film on DVD and whilst it will never win any major awards, it is much more faithful to H.G.Wells' original book than films previous to it.

The 2x things that stick out of this film as poor - are the acting & the CGI work, however the production is execllent.

I feel that if this film was given a full budget, it would be more than a `B-movie` (said with some affection, as it isn`t a kind description but an acurate one)

Anybody else seen this version of War of the Worlds & would like to comment?

As a fan film this is excellent, as a professionaly produced film it`s mediocre, however I like the contrast with the latest blockbuster filmed with 100x times more budget

I've ordered a copy (from a slightly dodgy seller on eBay as it seems impossible to get it in the UK otherwise). I haven't received it yet. Hopefully it'll arrive soon and I can comment on it then.

Where did you manage to get yours from Zol?

Ebay too, wasn`t going to spend too much on it but it was just over £14 and the seller posted it the next day 1st class delivery.

If you are a fan of the book (and I`ve just read it for the 1st time) then this is a good representation of it (with some minor changes for film)

p.s. the film is 3 hours long.

I've just finished watching my copy, and I'd have to agree with your assessment with a couple of additions:

[Slight spoilers for those who might be concerned about such things]

1) It didn't really seem convincing that we were in turn of the century southern England. Things like the town houses stuck on their own in the middle of a field (though very Monty Python) and the representation of Woking station really don't help. Also, don't get me started on the trains!

2) The film seemed to be very tedious in places, and rushed in others, particularly towards the end.

3) The 'Thunder Child' scene was rather disappointing, the CGI almost looked like it had come from a computer game, and didn't seem nearly as dramatic as in the book or musical version.
The scene on the Great North Road could also be better.

4) The accents, now I'm not good on accents, but a lot of them sounded like they were from the wrong side of the world. Pronounciation of place names also seemed a little off.

5) It would be nice if they could decide whether it is going to be night or day and stick with it.
Combining both in the same scene just doesn't work.

6) The colour, personally I'd have preferred if they'd stuck to one hue all the way through, preferablly not the 'sepia' one.

Having said all that, it is, save for bits around the end, very accurate to the book, which I read a couple of weeks ago after seeing the 'new' film. However, had I not read the book, I'm not sure I'd have understood what was going on (e.g. the purpose of the black smoke was never explained).

I think I'd have been disappointed if I'd paid full price to see it in the cinema or buy the DVD, but with this film I had a pretty good idea what to expect and it's always interesting to see another perspective on the story.

I`m supprised you didn`t notice the diesel shunter pulling the carriages of the train too

I think as I said, as a fan film this would be impressive, but as a comercial venture, I would say could have done way better with better CGI/SFX & English actors.

btw, this is faithful to the book, so those slow periods you speak of, come from HG Wells & not neccesarily the film version.

All the best,

regards,
