Meaning like, in this century.
It was the highest rated TV Movie Of The Week ever...HALF of all TV-watchin' folk in 1972 tuned it in (includin' Lil'Chrisisall- can't believe my parents let me watch stuff like that!!).

So, with all the lightning fast editing & CGI these days, do you think it still holds up? Or is it a relic?

Loved the show when it was on, and that MoW in particular - and yes and no on the holding up part. The movie still holds up as a stand alone piece - very well in fact.
The series is still excellent because of Darren McGavin, but some of the "effecks" have become, as you hint at, a tad dated and thin. One ep I saw recently had an incredibly bad "man in an alligator suit" lumbering around, and all the dark, moody lighting couldn't make it work or scary i the least.
But, that was never what made it successful for me - the writing was always well done and the casting was always unique. McGavin and his boss Simon Oakland ("he'd turn Buddha into a chain smoker") were great - in the right show at the right time.

John Llewelyn Moxey directed lots of stuff like Kung Fu, Shaft, Genesis II, Mission: Impossible, etc. But that was his shining moment, IMO.

Loved the series, and McGavin in it. He had some ongoing bits of business -- I remember best the issues with food, which would be rejected silently as stale or distasteful -- back into the bag, back into the fridge, etc.

I think he'd have been great in Firefly, actually.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and of the silly.
Man could deadpan his way through anything.

Now about the FX, guys, we always *knew* they
were cheesy beyond belief but we made allowances
and dreamed of the day some of us would make them
better. Right?

There is a remake in the works? Are they having Richard Anderson in it?

Loved Darrin McGavin in anything, one reason Raw Deal is among my fave Ahnold flicks. Also having Oscar Goldman made Night Stalker quite a classic in it's own time. Wasn't much else to compare to then, and the emergence of the slasher genre of films a few years later owes allegiance to Night Stalker for the template.

Too bad Darrin insisted on staying in New York, we missed out on some great acting.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I loved the original Nightstalker shows. Saw them all and wish they were out on dvd. I've been reading the NS comics put out by Moonstone Comics. They have been really good and have kept the feel of the show.

I didn't care much for the new Nightstalker show. It just didn't look or feel at all like the original.

Just watched The Night Strangler (it was included on the disk), and man was that some good writing! Not as scary as the first, but way more character. Matheson could really write 'em!!

It's on DVD? Nice, rich edition with extra features, commentaries? I should put in a
request with Santa or possibly even the Midsummer
Fairy?

TQVM for link. I read the reviews, etc. but
notice it's mentioned there isn't much in the
way of additional material.
(Snivel, snivel, snivel. I'm spoiled, I guess.)
