Comes out Thursday, the 14th. Who's going, who's waiting?

I've heard that "Jedi" is pluralized in other languages advertising.

I didn't like the last one. I think it was that I didn't particularly care for the cast. This looks like more of the same.

The same thing happened with the original series. I hated Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker. He really sucked.

The first reactions to The Last Jedi are in, and they’re universally glowing. Those who have seen the film say it’s one of the most unique entries in the Star Wars universe, filled with truly unexpected moments.

Disney has embargoed full reviews of The Last Jedi until later this week, but audience members were allowed to post their spoiler-free thoughts on social media.

The pattern is clear: The Last Jedi is unlike any other Star Wars film to date. Many of the people who have seen it sound like little kids who’ve watched a Star Wars movie for the very first time.

I’ve seen THE LAST JEDI. It is the funniest STAR WARS by leaps and bounds, and the most interesting visually since the first. Maybe even including the first!

I didn’t think Star Wars movies could make me cry, but The Last Jedi did, not because of nostalgia but because it felt big-hearted in a new way

I don't think a perfect cast would have saved the first set, it was bad plot and marketing hulabaloo. And like the Titanic, you knew how it was going to end and that it would end badly. You can hardly blame the actors for THAT.

Hayden wasn't a perfect actor in it but if you compare the acting to other young adults at the time, he wasn't the worst either. Most straight men aren't great actors in their 20's.

I still think he's good looking, and maybe that's all that they wanted... eye candy. He married the chick from Jumper that he co-starred with (Hart of Dixie's Rachel Bilson), had a couple kids and they just recently split up.

Several at work have been talking about it every day. At 2 1/2 hours, my local cinema does not have an early enough Showtime for me to see Thursday. Some from work are taking the day off so they can watch it.

Sounds like it only compares to Episode IV: A New Hope.

The director said it refers to Luke and should be singular. Which makes sense because in the crawl for Force Awakens they call Luke "the last Jedi".

The real question to me is "Does this mean forever or just at the current time?". I really really hope they aren't ending the Jedi order. 1.) The Jedi have always been the heroes of Star Wars 2.) they need force users with lightsabers so they'd likely just replace the Jedi order with something else and it would just feel like only a name change which to me sounds dumb.

I never even watched Episode III. Like the Super Hero burnout, I was burned out on Star Wars a long time ago. To each their own, but I have no interest in seeing any of the new SW/Disney cash grab. Not even for free on my Kodi.

I am as shocked as anyone that a Star Wars movie found its way onto my Best Movies list — but I was bowled over by The Last Jedi. www.vox.com/2017-in-review/2017/12/15/16751138/best-movies-2017

The Last Jedi is beautiful to look at and keeps its eye on the relationships between characters and how they communicate with one another, in addition to the bigger galactic story. The same characters are back, but they seem infused with new life, and the galaxy with a new kind of hope. The movie’s best details are in the strong bonds that develop between characters, and I left the film with the realization that for the first time in my life, I loved a Star Wars movie. Now I understand the magic.

I knew literally nothing about THE LAST JEDI going in. And if I didn’t like it, I probably would have been very quiet about it. But then a thing happened that only happens when your brain is caught on fire by a lovely movie… I couldn’t stop talking about it. And suddenly I was talking with people who had some different reactions, but also complex ones. And in those discussions I found that there was nothing less at stake then the entire meaning of STAR WARS all together… So let’s get spoilery and into this shit, shall we?

2.

I’ve made my feelings about The Force Awakens quite clear before. http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/06/28/star-wars-the-force-alluded-to
To sum them up, I think J.J. has always been a talented filmmaker with an incredible casting eye, quite adept at imbuing a given moment with energy and emotion, but it’s always just that: a moment. There’s never a larger context. Carol Markus will scream as her father dies then the entire movie will go on as if it never happened. It’s all bits of affectation that excite and delight, and as far as meaning goes, it’s all promise and deep questions and lingering intrigue that pull you in deep, deep, deep… but, you know, never amount to anything. And it’s not that the “answers” are bad, it’s just that they were never set up to be meaningfully answered in the first place. That’s the mystery box. That’s literally the design. He doesn’t think it matters what’s inside as long as he makes you think it’s important. He’s literally said this. And that’s what it’s always been. It’s a grift. A con. A charming way of storytelling that whispers sweet nothings in your ear and is out the window before you wake up. And in making a Episode 7, I was hoping he’d cast it aside, and in some ways he did, and in some ways doubled down on some of his worst story habits of “momentary effect” over building to a coherent point. And the lack of that point is all symbolized in that final moment, Rey standing there to hand a lightsaber to Luke. It’s not a story beat. It’s not really anything. Just someone waiting to hand a baton to someone who can figure out a way to have any of this make a lick of sense.

There’s a reason this movie begins with Luke throwing it off a cliff.

In fact there’s a number of moments in the film that seem like direct refutations to the mystery box questions that were vaguely teased as maybe kinda sorta being deeply important. Why did we think they were? Because destiny! Because Skywalkers! Because Luke I am your father! Because mysteries and answers! And so for two years the internet does what they always do with J.J. and trying to solve the unsolvable questions that were never meant to be answered in the first place. So for two years they’ve been speculating about Rey’s parentage, or Snoke’s origins, or the Knights of Ren, etc. And what does the film do in response? It definitively takes those mystery box questions and throws them off the literal and proverbial cliff. Sometimes it’s done in a funny way, sometimes in an incredulous way, but it’s always in purposeful way. Because in the end, The Last Jedi is actually about something really, really important.

And it’s going to lay the groundwork to get us there…

One critic thinks it did have a point that was not in the previous 7 movies: Rey and Rose and so many others are everything important about this movie. They are people who aren’t the sons or daughters of legends. They are people who have been discarded and stepped on. But that doesn't make them any less capable of the force, any less a jedi, any less powerful…

The Star Wars series’ focus on lineage and the way some all powerful family who are the most powerful force users basically controlled the fate of galaxy was… super gross. It’s everything I hate about the notion of "destiny” and “why I’m destined to be a hero!” That psychology only leads you to the kind of place where you are the asshole kid screaming DO YOU KNOW WHO MY FATHER IS!?!?! at nightclubs.

And I am ALLLL for empowerment. But...STAR WARS. The thing that always attracted me was "the force" idea. Always made a hell of a lot more sense than most religiosity. Rey goes down the hole of evil and does an infinity party trick?? Maybe there is a deeper meaning like "everything is a circle" or "you and life will go on" but it was just hollow filler for me. WHAT DOES THE FORCE MEAN, to ANYONE HERE??

Nothing really was learned and I have sooo many questions...

(((MILD SPOILERS HERE))))

WAS THE REST OF THE MOVIE AFTER THE HOLE REY'S WEIRD DAYDREAM???

WHY all the plot twists that basically just piss on fan theory??

Maybe Luke is just afraid of heights and that's why he thinks the hole is evil?

Maybe drinking green Snuffalufagus milk has made him senile or really weak??

Maybe if Luke just said to Kylo "sorry, dude, I was just stroking my light saber and it went off, you can go back to sleep" think of all the deaths that could have been avoided???

What WAS Yoda trying to say??? I'm dead and incoherent, WHEEE!

Did we REALLY need Snoke to monologue until Kylo finds some balls? STILL an emo loser! And the shirtless scene??? Put the helmet back on and I'll think about it, honey

Why Phasma...What is the point of her?? Perpetually shiny loser? Is she Snoke's concubine??....I can't imagine any other reason to keep her useless rear around??? Does the shiny suit chafe her boobs??

Were the AT-AT drivers drunk or blind??

Why did Leia think they have what they need to restart a rebellion?? They put out a distress call and *crickets*

Maybe after losing the 34th villain and 90th ship, maybe both sides eventually say "this is kind of pointless, the only winning move is not to play..."

Maybe Kylo just needs to smoke some space weed and stop being a tool for thirty seconds??

WHO THE HELL IS SNOKE AND WHY SHOULD WE CARE?????

And it's really darn good luck to travel around w/ one of these things in the trunk of your Star Cruiser, just because...

I mean, seriously ! Who thinks to build and then carry around a massive hypersonic battering ram when they're flying around in space ? The Resistance literally had no idea they were going to make a run for a Helms Deep style hidden base until they happened to stumble across it while trying to figure out their next move ! And don't tell me the N.O. carries around industrial grade battering ram rays as standard gear. No freakin' way.

Oh, and bombers ?? Really ?? That have to fly directly over a ship, so close that the explosions take out the bomber itself ? Ughh! This movie made no damn sense.

Three out of eleven critics agreed that Space Mary Poppins was the least favorite part, but it didn't bother me because I had seen it before on the TV show Dark Matter when Two was blown out into space, and yet The Force was with her. She would have died when her blood boiled in the vacuum if not for her nano-bots. Leia's blood would have boiled in outer space if not for her midi-chlorians, which are magical nano-bots under a different name. www.imdb.com/title/tt4159076/

What was your least favorite part of the film? from www.theringer.com/2017/12/17/16788228/star-wars-the-last-jedi-exit-sur
vey

* Yoo: Space Mary Poppins.

Gruttadaro: That Kylo didn’t keep the mask for just a little bit longer, because his voice was really sounding like the end of “Runaway” and I was into it.

Baumann: I thought Ghost Luke’s intervention in the movie’s last battle poured it on a little thick.

Uggetti: Rey’s I, Robot clone dream.

Fennessey: I think Casino Planet could have been avoided entirely, thus removing about 20 minutes of runtime.

Herman: The runtime? There’s a lot of unnecessary plot in this movie, probably born of a Disney-imposed requirement that Star Wars must be all things to all people. Internal contrast is the bread and butter of this franchise, which places sci-fi war stories alongside Buddhist-adjacent space monks. Even by those standards, however, certain elements here felt grafted-on or disjointed: cutesy animals for toys; cutesy kids for sequel protagonists; Marvelesque one-liners for levity in what’s objectively the saga’s darkest chapter to date. And while I loved the overt populism of the casino plot line, that entire detour felt like one complication too many.

Kram: The payoff to the Laura Dern subplot is tremendous, but the buildup—in which her character hides plans from Poe and he leads a mutiny—isn’t. In a movie already full of surprising twists and real stakes, there was no need for this extra bit of manufactured tension, and Dern’s sacrifice would have worked just as well without it.

* Kwak: Leia floating through space. C’mon, son.

Lindbergh: The Canto Bight detour was mostly a mess. Admiral Ackbar’s death deserved more fanfare, and Captain Phasma was still lame. But I’m the guy who was hyped for the soundtrack heading into the movie, and if anything, The Last Jedi’s score was even more reliant on references to past movies and devoid of new and noteworthy themes. Maybe I’m the only one who’s still expecting enough from octogenarian John Williams to feel let down when he doesn’t deliver at the level he used to, but as exciting as The Last Jedi’s throne-room fight was, it would have been twice as adrenaline-inducing with a track to rival “Duel of the Fates,” “Battle of the Heroes,” or my favorite snippet of Star Wars music ever: the 40 seconds or so that accompanies the end of the last Luke-Vader duel.

* Samman: Leia flying through space was a case of “right idea, poor execution.” It’s cool that we got to see her use the Force; I just wish it hadn’t been as cartoonish as it was. Also, the casino scene, while a beautiful critique of unregulated capitalism, was kind of unnecessary.

Surrey: There’s only one correct answer: Chewie killed and roasted a porg. I don’t care if he didn’t eat it on-screen, Chewie went to the dark side.

Oh, and Benecio Del Toro WAS OBNOXIOUS...could you imagine if MAL had that part??? Would have been EPIC!

There are 20 stories about how characters, scenes, dialog got added to the movie. Here are three, including why Benicio del Toro was directed to be more Elvis Costello than Mal:

www.thisisinsider.com/star-wars-the-last-jedi-making-of-details-2017-1
2

The "DJ" in Benicio del Toro's character's name stands for "Don't Join." The phrase comes from a 1978 poster for Elvis Costello and the Attractions' third album "Armed Forces." Director Rian Johnson said he "loved that phrase."

Captain Phasma wasn't originally supposed to exist at all. Her costume was a sketch for Kylo Ren's costume. "It was a design for Kylo Ren that I had hanging up in the design room even after J.J. said, 'I want him totally different. He's not leading the stormtroopers as one of them,'" said costume designer Michael Kaplan. "I guess it hung there long enough that I got attached to it. Then Lucasfilm president Kathy Kennedy walked in one day and said, 'What is that? That has to be in the movie!'"

The simple design of the porgs was to make sure they were easy for kids to draw. "If a child wants to draw a porg, how easy is it to draw so that you instantly know it's a porg?" said creature and droid effects supervisor Neal Scanlan. "That pushed it to two eyes and a little head on a stubby body with little legs." A million times a million toy Porgs will be Christmas gifts.

Snoke doesn't have much of a backstory...he's Nowhere Man.

After the Battle of Jakku, what was left of the Empire fled the galaxy to the Unknown Regions where it slowly became The First Order, re-emerging with Supreme Leader Snoke at its head. Logically, since Snoke was not a known member of the Empire prior to it fleeing into the Unknown Regions, he would have come from there himself, and more evidence from Pablo Hidalgo’s Star Wars the Last Jedi the Visual Dictionary lends credence to that theory.

Does OUR military today have a battering ram ? Seriously, no modern military has one. And we fight exclusively on the planet. Battering rams are what... 16th century tech ? Shaped charges or bunker busters do the job better. And cheaper, I'd imagine.

And speaking of explosions, the impact of the ordinance that took out the bridge on the rebel / RESITANCE ship alone should have killed Leia. The incendiary effects, the shrapnel, the concussive forces of 1. blowing up and 2. explosive decompression , and oh yeah, the vacuum and cold temperatures of space ... she dead. Sorry. That SHOULD have been her final scene. That she lives and Luke dies... just ridiculous.

OK, so Wishy actually had a good idea here.
If the next film opens with the revelation that TLJ was just a daydream, the franchise could be saved.

If you say so. lol

That was a worn out trope before I was born.

Keep churning out the crap though, Disney (and Marvel and DC and everybody else). Tons of great material for great channels on YouTube.

Yanno... maybe when I'm in the correct mood I should just take the plunge and watch these new Star Wars movies. Maybe they're not so bad if you can watch them through the eyes of a child.

It's not as if the original Star Wars movies didn't have political ideas behind them. It's just that when I watched them I was around 8 years old and I didn't see the world through the eyes of a jaded adult.

I'll only watch them at a time where my mind is clear and the politics of the world aren't in the back of my mind all the time.

Maybe next week. I'm definitely not in the right mood tonight. :)

Not to come to dingleberry's defense or anything, but he was talking about himself as a child and not in reference to you, Brenda. I think.

Yeah. Wishy had it right. Ummm.. thanks for that I guess.

No Brenda, lol. I wasn't calling you a child. I was just saying that I might personally actually find enjoyment in the movies if I can strip away years of adulthood and all the crap that comes with it and just enjoy the movies as pure fantasy and entertainment without the politics.

I don't know if that's possible anymore. I can hardly watch anything new from Hollywood these days. It makes it worse when good acting is ruined because I know who the actor is and what they believe and preach in real life.

I pretty much just watch indie stuff with unknowns or actors and actresses I know little about in real life. Or TV shows that I just think are infinitely better than the movie format these days.

Sorry you seem to have taken that the wrong way. I had no idea when I posted it that it would come off like that. I only even entertained the notion because you posted that you just saw it and liked it.

'Episode VIII' leans heavily on references to the originals, and that doesn't play with young audiences in the world's No. 2 market.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi suffered one of the worst second-weekend declines the Chinese box office has ever seen. The film's debut of $28.7 million was already viewed as disappointing, but its 92 percent plummet to just $2.4 million in weekend two was arguably alarming.

"The Last Jedi has already been completely pulled from cinemas here," Jimmy Wu, chairman of nationwide Chinese cinema chain Lumiere Pavilions, told The Hollywood Reporter by phone from Yancheng, a mid-sized city representative of the sorts of towns where the bulk of China's box-office growth is now generated. "It's performed much worse than we could have expected."

Given the rigid control the government has over the media over there, one has to wonder how true any of those statements are other than the box office numbers.

We've given China a ton of financial power and that now extends to making or breaking blockbuster movies. It didn't save Ghostbusters 2 in 2016, which SONY desperately needed saving when the Chinese government banned cinemas from even screening it because it had ghosts in it. (Notice how it didn't mind showing TLJ with Ghost Yoda burning down a tree with lightning.... curious).

Maybe China didn't kill TLJ in the end, but you can bet that Disney was assuming a much larger payout on the back end that hasn't happened.

This may actually be an attack not just on Disney by China, but on the struggling Hollywood Industry and what I'm sure China believes is a large part of the American way of life.

Hollywood has always been preachy, going back to the first Star Trek...which were basically morality plays.

Only difference now is women play bigger, more commanding leads and they add in 37 extra plot twists to try to keep the A.D.D. people awake.

That's what it was for me. A couple of hours of hours of getting out of my own head.

No problem. We rarely don't see eye to eye and I didn't want a misunderstanding like this changing that.

No need to justify why you watch Hollywood movies to me. I don't look down on anybody who does. I actually admire it. I wish I could go back, yanno? Maybe that's part of being sober too? I really don't think I can shut off the analytical part of my brain off enough to watch something like TLJ anymore without my brain ruining it unless I got drunk or high.

In lieu of that, I have to spend my free time working on projects that are pretty OCD driven and most people would probably find unbearable. In order for me to maintain my sobriety, I have to indulge my brain's natural tenancy for overworking by throwing a lot of repetitive tasks its way. Drowning it worked, but at the cost of all of my relationships and a quickly deteriorating body that I don't think is ever going to recover fully from what I did to it.

Hell... except for certain types of them heavy on puzzle elements, I can't even really play video games anymore which was a very enjoyable experience for me for a long time. They just can't put my brain in that idle state like they used to be able to do.

I'm glad you enjoyed TLJ. Maybe one day I can too. I know that I'm not going to watch any of them until I feel there's at least a chance I can maintain the right frame of mind for a few hours beforehand though.

Sad to say that those of us who were lucky to catch the original SW in movie theatres will find little to cheer for w/ this franchise as it moves forward. The production model for making these movies is die casted. " Story telling " comes a distant 2nd behind marketing to the next generation of gullible consumers , err... ' fans'. Honestly this is why I was so drawn to Firefly , is that it was so damn different and adult, but didn't take itself too seriously. I swear by my floral bonnet... ugh.

I've had periods in my life especially a while after the brain surgery where I felt like I was running out of time. Not sure how long that lasted but it faded.

My life in the last few years has had a few ups and downs and at times now I feel like I have too much time. So I am trying to find ways to fill spaces. Whether it is this part time job, playing mah jong or booting around the internet on this stupid computer.

I can do alone when I choose it but having it sort of foisted on me by circumstance sticks in my craw.

I hope you do get to see this Star Wars movie as it was enjoyable.

Oh... I don't think I have all that much time left myself. I'm alright with that. I'm actually in terrible pain after a shift of work, and I often find myself getting light headed while doing a lot of heavy lifting. The price you pay for destroying your body for years I guess. No use crying over spilled milk. I do keep hoping that it will get better, but after two months of this I don't really see any forward progress. I think this job would have literally killed me already if I hadn't quit drinking a year ago and lost all that weight because of it.

I do need to get in touch with my Uncle who can write up a will for me, just in case. I wouldn't want to stick the family without a plan of what to do with my stuff. The father of my niece isn't getting anything, but he'll have to handle the sale of the house and setting up a trust for my niece and my disabled brother. It's nothing personal to my other Bro, but he and his wife are set to be pretty well off when all the student debt is paid off, and what I leave for my niece should take care of a nice chunk of her college education.

Had some bad spells, but I put in a good run overall. Still have a few projects I'd like to finish before I go, so I hope it's not really any time all that soon.

Not sure if the new Star Wars movies will make my bucket list, but ya never know what I might do when I get tired of working on my projects in my free time. All those movies are free and just a few clicks away on KODI.

Glad to hear you got your head on straight and you're thinking positively, Brenda. I hope you get a chance to see all of those places you still want to see.

I'm actually not depressed anymore. I've set goals, I've immersed myself in my hobbies and I'm even trying to figure out the best way to monetize them. There's just some things that have happened recently that I don't want to go into detail about that tell me that there's no going back. The damage was too much, and I'm too old to bounce back from it now. If anything, it's kind of liberating, and my perspective on just about everything is changing now that I know I'm living on the clock.

For instance, I really don't ever want to work full time again, and at this point I don't know if anybody could ever offer me enough money to do it. I've already got a pretty good thing here to leave the two people I want to when I go, and they're both not hurting for anything even without that. Short of a few big ticket items I really need to make life more comfortable and less stressful, I've already got it all. My free time is actually extremely valuable to me now, and after paying the bills and putting a little bit away for these big purchases, I really don't even want to put a dollar value on it anymore.

Who knows... Maybe one day if the mood strikes me, I'll give some of that free time to Disney and watch their Star Wars movies. :)
