Once he got his own show, he was able to be much more complex; he is a very layered character who has a lot more going on for him than being Buffy's boyfriend. I love Angel so much because he's a complete bastard who so desperately wants to be good but just can't keep going on consistently. I also liked the show because it's about a demon who lives in a demon world who just happens to have a few buddies who are human. Buffy used demons as metaphors for humanity, but Angel is so detached from life that he has a completely different perspective. Angel is a more serious show, but it's definitely funny. Angel himself is a dork, but he's oblivious to pretty much everything. So the humor doesn't come from jokes as much as actions.

So him tunring into Angelus didn't have the impact that, say, finding out Nina was the mole in the first season of 24. If you doubt the validity of that statement, rent the first season of 24 and watch it from beginning to end. By the time you get to the final hour, your heart and lungs feel like they're in a vice, you're about an inch from falling off your seat and you are heavily addicted to the whole thing. BUFFY is like really expensive chocolate. It's sweet and goes down easy, but you can taste the rich subleties to it. 24, on the other hand, is like cocaine. One snort and you're addicted to it and ravenous for more.
