Well folks, this is it.

I have now watched all 144 episodes of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Took me about half a year, but I managed to get through all of it before the year was out. I was refraining myself from posting on this specific section of the community until I've seen everything of it so that I'm not going "Huh??" and "Whaaa?" What follows is my season by season breakdown of the series. What I liked, disliked and general thoughts and highlights.

#1: Even thought at times it was a bit cheesy (TEACHER'S PET in my opinion was the worst episode of the whole series) and they were still finding their way, the had a surprising number of good ideas and episodes and had a clear idea of what they wanted to be. I thought The Master was a great Big Bad and Jenny Calendar was a good contrast for Giles. I liked how with eps like "Puppet Show", they went down one way with a supposedly predictable storyline and then subverted it to make it something unique and very funny. I wish they didn't kill her in the finale, even if it was for a few seconds so that the whole second Slayer issue would come up. By the time they brought her back from the dead again, it was stretching it a bit that she would have Lazarus beat by one. But all in all, a promising start.

#2: Like the first season, they were still finding their step, but the good eps outweighed the bad, and there were a few. "Inca Mummy Girl", "Bad Eggs" and "Go Fish" were some dumbass ones, but "Halloween", "Lie To Me", "Ted" and the three two parters were all very well done. I wish Kiara lasted longer than she did. I'm a sucker for rastafarian accent. Coredlia became less annoying and more enjoyable. I liked Spike and Dru as villains, although I'm still out on the jury about Angelus. I know Angel was supposed to be an integral part of the show, but the whole dark and broody act got to be a bit boring, so it didn't really hit me or affect me when Angel became Angelus and then him becoming Angel in the few moments before Buffy killed him to keep the Apocalypse from happening. I always thought Angel became a better character once he left and got his own show.

#3: This season is what I call the SGT. PEPPERS year. This is when the show hit it's stride and didn't look back. Not a single weak episode of the whole bunch. The Mayor was a really odd but very compelling villain and Faith was an interesting addition. The intro to Anya was incredibly well done and it's fun to see the paralle verse of evil Xander and Willow and then evil Willows displacement into our verse. Spikes only ep in this season, I think, is his best episode, if only just seeing him mope with Joyce and ask her if she has any of those little bitty marshmallows. And the ending was pretty kick ass.

#4: Continues the stride that they hit in 3, with exception of "Pangs", "Beer Bad" and the annoying roomate at the beginning, which you could see her being a demon coming a mile away. The Initiative and Riley added an interesting dimension in that there are non-magic people fighting demons and how their involvement, which well meaning, ultimately doesn't work since they can't see the shades of grey that comes with the job. Adam was a unique villain in that he was basically the Frankenstein monster with the brain of a philosopher. "Fear Itself" was my personal favorite episode in that you had a really good haunted house, Giles with a sombrero and a chainsaw and the payoff of the "actual size" demon. One bit that I disagreed with is the disintegration of Oz and Willow. I liked them more than Buffy/Angel. And even though Tara and Willow made a great couple, like Xander said later on the series "I miss Oz". One thing that I liked overall was how Joss became more experimental with his narratives and made more what I like to call "avant garde" episodes. "Hush" comes to everyones mind, and while it was an incredibly well done ep, I lean towards "Restless", the season finale. One could analyze that ep in a film class and find lots to work with. And how could you not like The Cheese Guy. "I wear the cheese. It does not wear me."

#5: The whole Dracula ep seemed a bit off, Glory wasn't that compelling of a big bad, Dawn was at first annoying, but I liked how they explained her sudden appearance and how she tied in, although some powers would have helped. But there were some very funny individual episodes that I dug (the troll one and the Xander double one being my faves). Joyce becoming more prominant was a wise decision, which lead to "The Body" which I feel is the single best episode of the whole series, and its follow up "Forever" was equally powerful. "Family" I think shows an intersting motif in Joss's work which I'd like to debate. I think Joss prefer's made up families over real ones. In his work, I see characters that do not come from strong families and have good ties with at least their parents and would rather be with a group of random misfits that call themselves a family. Think about it. Buffy's from a broken home, Xander's family is by all accounts horrendous, Tara's family is evil, Angel and his dad never got on well, same with Wesley, and of course we have the Tams in FIREFLY. The only time in any of Joss's work where the biological family of a character wasn't dysfunctional in one way or another was with Fred in season 3 of ANGEL. When you see her avoiding meeting her folks, you think that her folks abused her or something. But you find out in the end that she was avoiding them because she was trying to make her time in Lorne's verse an illusion. And that to see her folks after all these years would mean that the horrendous place was real after all. And that her decision to stay with Angel Investigations wasn't a "Fuck you Mom and Dad, you sucked as parents so I'm calling these people my family." that Tara and Simon/River faced, but a proper "I love you Mom and Dad, but I've finally found my place in the world."

Joss doesn't like biological families, does he. But I digress.

If they had ended the series with "The Gift", they still would have had a great show.

#6: You can start to see that the show was getting long in the tooth, but still had that inescapable quality. The Troika I liked because they added a lot of humor to a very dour and depressing year. "Tabula Rasa" is one of my personal favorite episodes of the whole series. "Once More, With Feeling" was a good stand alone ep, and I'm glad Joss made it, but it didn't really do anything for me. Like Joss, I'm a real music geek. Unlike Joss, I couldn't write a song if my life depended on it, and my musical tastes run more towards "The Commitments" and Cameron Crowe than Stephen Sondheim. Willow's grappling with magic as if she were a drug addict was one of the better metaphors for the series. And when she went bad, evil Willow was a lot scarier than evil Angel. And that Xander was able to save the world because of his ordinariness was a great twist.

#7: I thought this was a pretty good last season. They were able to resolve some of the overall themes, arcs and ideas of the show and give the whole thing a satisfying end. "Same Time, Same Place" was a very good Willow centered episode. And "Selfless" is one of my faves since it finally gives Anya an episode to herself. And any time you have her and D'Hoffryn in the mix you have gold. I didn't think Kennedy was too annoying or "Tara-lite" and I was glad to see Jonathan have one last shining moment, although I wish it was him that was at the end and not Andrew who got to be a bit irritating. It was weird to see Nate Fillion's Caleb being the comeplete opposite of Mal, but it still worked. And the finale was incredibly satisfying, if not a thing of beauty like the SIX FEET UNDER series finale, which is now my litmus test for series finales.

So those are my thoughts on this cultural monument. I really enjoyed it. Not enough to buy, but have specific eps of it downloaded on my computer. I'll do this again when I get through seasons 3,4, and 5 of ANGEL.

I don't think Joss hates normal families, I think it's more that he finds the created family much more interesting from a story perspective. It's much messier than a normal family because there's no easy way to tell who's in and who's out and it's easy to change places.

Please do get around to finishing Angel, some of the best stuff comes near the end. (Season Five is my personal favorite)

Actually the original Creature (as written by Shelley) also had a philosophical bent. He was more of a Tragic Socratic figure than the slow-witted Boris Karloff movie version.

and I think if you drag out 'Pangs' to watch around Thanksgiving day you'll find it is a riot...
SMG has never been funnier (IMO) as when she is channeling Martha Stewart and forgetting about her responsibilities.

I loved 'Pangs' too. Spike comming to Buffy for help was great. Im suprised that 'Innocence' wasnt mentioned after watching S2, or even 'Passion'. Then again...if ya dont really dig 'Angelus' then I guess you wouldnt dig those epis. Those were the two episodes hooked me and made me say 'holy crap this show is amazing'.

I also thought it was odd that the reviewer said they enjoyed it but wouldnt pay money for it. I dunno how you could watch 144 episodes of something and not be somewhat passionate about it.

I have only watched through season 4 of Buffy and through season 2 of Angel. I also agree with a previous poster that Innocence and Passion episodes were the reason I was hooked on Buffy. I'm probably one of the few but I like the first 4 seasons of Buffy in this order:
season 3 I liked season 3 and 2 almost the same.
season 2
season 1
season 4.

I really was a little disappointed in season 4 but I still liked it. I'm just starting season 5. I ended up buying the chosen Buffy collection after watching the first 3 season.

The reason I said that I wouldn't pay money for it was because I have way too many shows on DVD that I have, and that even though the whole series I can pick up for $250, I have other shows that I want to pick up as well for shows I'm more passionate about, like season 4 of 24.

That, as well as owing $400 to SGI because I got into an accident that happened because I forgot to put on the parking break ("D'oh!")

As to the whole Angelus thing, I understand that some people thought it was a real high point for the series. And even though the metaphor attached to it (girl has sex with boyfriend who turns evil afterwards) was what made it potent, it just seemed like him going evil was too much of a red flag to not notice that something was wrong.

Like I said before, I never really got into the whole Angel/Buffy relationship. People make it sound like they can give Romeo and Juliet a run for their money, but like Spike said in season 7, "Angel's duller than a table lamp." So him tunring into Angelus didn't have the impact that, say, finding out Nina was the mole in the first season of 24.

If you doubt the validity of that statement, rent the first season of 24 and watch it from beginning to end. By the time you get to the final hour, your heart and lungs feel like they're in a vice, you're about an inch from falling off your seat and you are heavily addicted to the whole thing.

BUFFY is like really expensive chocolate. It's sweet and goes down easy, but you can taste the rich subleties to it. 24, on the other hand, is like cocaine. One snort and you're addicted to it and ravenous for more.

Personally I thought this was one of the worst metaphors, particularly in terms of execution. The viewer could not have been clubbed over the head with it any more and survived...

I didn't rent the first season of 24 but watched it when it first aired. I thought it was pretty good but not good enough for me to watch any of the following seasons. I'm not trying to start a agrument about which is better just saying everybody has their favorite shows. IMHO even after only watching the first 4 seasons of Buffy I would rate the series as one of the top ten all time TV series.

OK. That's cool. But I think that if you were to watch the first 23 hours of it and see the build-up and the conspiracies and how it just builds and builds, you'd think the final hour would have a bigger impact, as opposed to watching it out of the blue without knowing all that had happened beforehand.

Just saying. It would be like me jumping into BUFFY in season 4 or some later season without seeing the build-up and mythology, which is part of why I waited for all 7 seasons to be out on DVD before I jumped into it. If I didn't I'd be really confused and lost.

Uh, ReginaRoadie, Tortimer didn’t say he’d watched the first season finale, he said he “didn't rent the first season of 24 but watched it when it first aired.” As in, he watched all twenty-four hours with their twists and turns and cul-de-sacs, and still was not interested in watching any more.

And I, too, watched the first season of 24 when it first aired and have watched all subsequent seasons, but I would never buy the DVDs. It just doesn’t have any rewatchability value for me. I find it only suspenseful and shocking the first time through, after that it doesn’t really hold my interest. But I have ever season of “Buffy” and “Angel” on DVD, which I watch over and over again and constantly find new layers and complexities. For me, 24 is a passing interest, but “Buffy” and “Angel” are, with “Firefly,” at the very top of my list of all-time greatest shows. What can I say? Some people juggle geese.

My bad. Sorry. Didn't realize that he had seen all prior eps leading up to it.

I actually find that 24 has re-watchability. Knowing the twists and turns, you can go back to see the subtle hints towards the twists, and also specific moments that really stick out. I often put on the 1st season finale by itself to get an adrenaline rush. And 24 is a lot more complex than you'd think. I heard it described once as "Greek tragedy with bullets" and I agree with that. Jack Bauer is far more of a tragic hero than Angel. Here's a guy who can save the world over and over again, but he can't save the ones closest to him.

Sweet lord, I'm hijacking my own thread. The whole thing about families that I mentioned above. What do you think about it?

All the way through, ya did it! I ended my fling with The Gift. I may (probably will, that is) pick it back up with the last two seasons, however, someday, if the Chosen Collection comes down slightly in price...or netflix...

Buffy was a wild ride for me, discovering FF in late Feb. 2005 prompted me to start the Sunnydale journey, and I did five seasons before the BDM came out (averaging 1 season per month).
I even worked in the first two seasons of Angel also...
"Gee Chris, you look tired, did you stay up too late last night, and the night before...?"

At this moment I actually only own season 3 (The only one I just COULDN"T let go of; I was buying and then selling to continue my oddessey), but I picked up the season 1 two-parter ($5!!!), Best Of Spike, and Curse of The Hellmouth for booster-shots' sake.

Joss likes to explore dysfunction, in government, families, the world in general. It's not just about surviving, it's about living while you survive, that what I love about his work.

Chrisisall, still kickin' himself for lettin' go of 4, he liked it so...

Warning: if you have not finished Buffy there could be spoilers in this message.

I just finished the entire series myself...I tried Buffy after I found FF in December 2005..A few years ago I watched parts of some Buffy episodes and was unimpressed and even began to use it as an example of bad shows that should not be on TV..I am a great example of why you need to see some TV shows from the first episode..After finishing the series I am now a huge fan...

I did think season 1 and 2 were somewhat weak in comparison to 3 - 7..Each episode after Season 2 seemed to get funnier and funnier.. I think how young an inexperienced the actors were is why the early years are not as compelling...I also thought it was fun to see the actors grow , see their timing improve in the comedy parts and to see them hit there marks in the dramatic scenes..

I was somewhat annoyed with Buffy in Season 6..It seems to me that a hot 19 year old with great friends and family would be a little more grateful for being brought back to life then being a crybaby..I know she was in heaven but she was 19 not 99 when she died...I felt Xander and Willow lost just as much as Buffy did in Seasons 1 - 5...After Season 5 I never felt Buffy,Xander and Willow were that close again and it was because of Buffy..In fact while I have been writing this I have come to realize I love the show, love Willow,Giles,Anya,Xander,The Mayer, All the principals,Tera,Oz,The Super Villians,Spike,Sweet and most of the characters..I did not like Faith,Angel,Cordellia or most of all Buffy by the end but like I said I still loved the show and felt that the actors who played these characters did there job I just did not like the characters...

I thought the way Joss made Xander kind of Super hero by being the only one of the main three characters to not have super powers was brilliant...

Thought the Musical episode and "hush" were outstanding episodes...

I have never laughed as loud as i did when Giles,Xander and Andrew are playing D&D on the eve of the final battle...

When I first found this board and could care less about Buffy I remember some posts about Whedons next projects being possibly Wonder woman or a return to the Buffy verse...Does any body know anything about a possible return of Buffy?

Also read interview with Nick Brendan that said the show ended because Joss couldn,t do Buffy,Angel and FF at the same time(plus they had not signed Gellar)...He also said he was annoyed that he had lost a lot of screen time in season 6...You have to figure that most of these actors would come back because they have not become any bigger then they were during the show..

By the way I am going to start Angel tonight. I am a little scared because I heard it was not as funny and I am not a Big Angel or Cordellia fan..

I didn't like Angel as a character at all when he was on BTVS. Once he got his own show, he was able to be much more complex; he is a very layered character who has a lot more going on for him than being Buffy's boyfriend. I love Angel so much because he's a complete bastard who so desperately wants to be good but just can't keep going on consistently. I also liked the show because it's about a demon who lives in a demon world who just happens to have a few buddies who are human. Buffy used demons as metaphors for humanity, but Angel is so detached from life that he has a completely different perspective.

Angel is a more serious show, but it's definitely funny. Angel himself is a dork, but he's oblivious to pretty much everything. So the humor doesn't come from jokes as much as actions.

I watched disc 1 of season 1 last night...I think I already agree with you..In just 4 episodes he is clearly a different character(much more likeable) I guess it was Buffy that made him a somewhat dull character...I also like the way they make fun of his moodyness in the show...I think making him somewhat of a detective puts the show in a different genre then BTVS which is important being that Angel is a spin off..

I saw the season 5 cover and Spike is on it...Didn't he die in the final BTVS ? How is that possible? Which show do you like better Angel or BTVS?

You've seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer and you still have to ask how it's possible for someone to come back from the dead? ;-) It's a little complicated to explain the whole storyline thingie, but the short reason is that the purpose was to get to Angel. You haven't yet found out the psychological errrrr... "reactions" Angel has to his wacky vampire family.

Which show do you like better Angel or BTVS?

That is so hard for me to answer. It totally depends on my mood when I'm asked that question. And right now I'm in the mood to be indecisive.

I realize it's been a long time since you posted that, but I'm also wondering if you have had second thoughts about Buffy, and have you finished watching Angel?

This is a perfect example of how people can agree whole-heartedly about one thing (Firefly for instance) but disagree about others. I never got into 24 when it originally aired, but recently borrowed season one from my brother. It was okay, but certainly not anything I am anywhere near addicted to. In fact, after I returned it my brother asked if I wanted to take season two, and I said no thanks, not interested. Also, you don't have to believe me on this, but I suspected Nina as the mole very early.

In response to this as well as chrisisall's follow up post, I gotta tell you I havn't thought too much about BUFFY. Actually, I made a recent thread called "Joss has daddy issues (all three series involved)" and it's kinda me talking about Joss' ouvre and one specific theme of his that bugs me.

As for ANGEL, I've gone through seasons 3 and 4 now and waiting for 5 to come in from the library. I gotta say, I actually liked Angelus more when he was brought back for ANGEL than his first appearance on BUFFY. My comments about Angel in season 2 still stand, but Angel himself became such a better character when he got his own show. So when Angelus does return, he's more of an actual menace, partially because this time, they intentionally brought him back. They had him in the cage in the basement and brought him back to pump him for information and even though they knew what to expect, they still wern't prepared for him. I loved that moment where Wes and Gunn are fighting each other over Fred, and you see Angelus in his cell listen, smile and say "Well, that didn't take too long." So Angelus's second go round was better than his first because I actually liked Angel this time.

As for seasons 3 and 4, I was glad that Lorne became part of the group than just a regular like he was in season 2, but not to big of a fan of Wes' trip to the dark side. I was glad that he toughened up and became less of an idiot, but it just seemed out of character for him to have an affair with Lilah. And even though they abandoned him, I knew it was only a matter of time before they let him back in. And when they did let him in, it was such a cool moment. And him a few minutes later pulling out the two .45 and firing at The Beast was just the cherry on top. I was so glad that for once they used actual guns and not the usual swords, stakes and medieval paraphinalia.

As for the two season arc, it worked more or less. Amazed that Connor was even more of a whiny teenager than Dawn. That's all I really gotta say.

Don't tell me anything about season 5. Will get DVD of it from library soon.

And 24 is still IMHO a way better series. Was so glad that it won Best Dramatic Series at the Emmys last night, as well as The Office for Best Comedy Series. My two favorite shows on the air winning the two highest tv honors. Pretty good early birthday present.

I do not agree that Once More with Feeling was a "stand alone" episode. The genius of this episode was that it fit into the show's many story arcs and wasn't just a novelty.

I feel the same way. OMWF was amazing because it furthered a number of storylines all at once without feeling rushed or confused, and had some really catchy musical numbers to boot. :)

America loves a winner!

Blockbuster has screwed my endeavor up completely. Discs coming out of order, sometimes entire SEASONS coming out of order ( SE 4 before SE 3 )

The 1st season was only like 12 episodes, right ? I've still not seen Buffy's senior year, and am having to piece bits together in SE 4.

I think I'm just gonna have to buy the whole damn series.

Well, he had too, didn't he? He had an entire show based on him, so he better become a multi-dimensional character. Angel was never much more than a supporting character on Buffy. He was Buffy's Oz. We only got enough character information needed for story and then attention had to be paid to the starring roles.

I've never seen 24, and don't really care to. But I do love The Office.

Auraptor, they're selling the condensed box sets for $24.99. Not a bad price. Once again I feel punished for being a long time fan. Not only did I pay the $45.99 for every season, but I then bought the Chosen Collection when it came out. I could've waited and just bought the Collection...or waited even longer and paid half of what I did the first go round. Grrr. Argh.
