Biggest Buffy faux pas ever, this is very disconcerting...

In Smashed, one of the Evil Trio refers to the figure Spike takes hostage as a 'mint 1979 Boba Fett'.
We all know that Boba didn't exist for the fans until 1980 with the release of The Empire Strikes Back!
What am I to do? This ruins all of the Buffyverse for me...the lack of attention to geekdom...the disintegration of realism...
*busts out sobbing*

Help me

It isn't right, it isn't fair; there was no Boba anywhere Chrisisall

I'm pretty sure a Boba Fett figure was released as a special offer by one of the cereal companies prior to the release of Empire. I also recall that Fett appeared in the Star Wars syndicated comic strip prior to the release of Empire.

Edit - I actually think the offer was through Kenner...one could get the figure by sending in proofs of purchase of the available figures at the time. I seem to recall they had a similar offer later with another one of the bounty hunters (Boask?).

Yes, I was a child of the 70s....

Actually, Boba was first introduced in the 1978 TV program The Star Wars Holiday Special. He appeared in the animated segment of it.

Yeah, and you'll note that the trio's figure had the missile launcher backpack, a feature that was neutered in the official production toy for safety reasons.

Me = toy geek.

If this is your biggest problem in the world, I envy you. It just goes to show...Joss is human. And even geeks make mistakes (if it is a mistake at all: see above). Relax. Take a walk. Enjoy life. The sky is not falling.

The Trio made another mistake. I forget the episode, and which of the trio said this. but apparently they'd seen ALL of Doctor Who. Which, given their ages, would be impossible, because most of the early episodes have been lost or destroyed and basically no longer exist.
Conversely, they hadn't seen all of Red Dwarf because it wasn't out on DVD. Surprisingly, neither was Doctor Who.
Methinks the geeks werent as geeky as they claimed...

Thanks, Adam, you have restored my faulty memory, and my fear in the face of the Evil Trio! I should have remembered, the animated segment was the only really good part; I guess I suppressed the memory because of the rest, heh heh.

With Dr. Who and Red Dwarf slips I can deal; Star Wars goofs I cannot. They have a stong influence on the weak-minded!
Er, not that I'm weak-minded, I just mean, you know....

Don't forget the limited edition Babylon 5 collector plates that Xander was so proud of, which never existed in reality. These things happen. Even the geekiest of writers make a mistake here and there.

Not knowingly...I was eight years old in 1979, and pretty much oblivious to music still (my first audio cassette was Kim Carnes' "Mistaken Identity" in '81). Didn't attend my first "sock hop" until '83, and that was enough to convince me to spend a few more years in a friend's basement playing RPGs...

Well, with the destroyed eps of Doctor Who from the Troughton and Hartnell years I could point out one thing:

Mad science plus hefty magic skills could mean that the Trio could actually have watched them all. Come on, would early Hartnell look cool scryed through a crystal ball or what?

Actually, there was one. My limited workplace surfing doesn't turn up a photo, but there is a listing here, in a B5 price guide:

http://www.webcs.com/b5/priceguide.html

It's listed as very rare.

What others have said is true... The Boba Fett figure did indeed exist prior to Empire, and was introduced for the holiday special.

I also remember the toy offer and the whole hoopla about replacing the shooting missile on his back. I remember because I sent in for the offer three times to get the figure, but I had apparently missed the deadline! The first two times I got a Bossk figure instead, but the third time was a charm. Hey, I was like six, okay...

Guess I shouldn't tell you that my husband barbequed his 1979 boba fett action figure ( without realizing it's value and all) when he was a kid. He's kicking himself now of course.
