I have just been to see the new Hitchhiker's film and loved it so much I went straight out and bought the book, I also watched the first episode of the series and am trying to find out where I can hear it on the radio. IT'S BRILLIANT!!!!!!! And so totally mad! Douglas Adams is now my hero! WOOHOO!

...and we will call it...this land...

Well in that case you HAVE to come to the Exhibition!!

I was actually a teeny bit disappointed with the film - I had fond memories of the old TV show and watched it again the week before I saw the film. Maybe I'd have enjoyed the film more if I hadn't done that - I was also thrown by the ending of the film. Not having read the book I didn't realise that the TV series actually covered the first two books.

I've now read the first four books - defintely recommend 1 & 2 but it goes a bit downhill after that.

But dontcha just want to give Marvin a big hug?

It was cute.

I saw a miniseries when I was about 12 or 13. The miniseries must have been made on a budget of $12.50. Still, I think it was cuter.

The books are cute, too.

I'm afraid I'll always weigh everything against the $12.50 miniseries. There were some bits from it that I missed in the movie. Important bits, even.

Though the Point of View gun was funny as heck.

I've read the books about a biilion times AND I liked the movie.

i thought they did a good job picking and choosing what would transfer to the screen. I can't get that song out of my head. I've been singing it non stop.

LISTER

I was a big fan of the books growing up. I was concerned how something as abstract as the books and DNA's writing would transfer to the big screen, but I think the reason I liked the movie was seeing one of my favorite stories in movie form.

And I definately think this movie is for the fans instead of the masses. I never laughed out loud because I've heard the jokes a million times, and I liked the original story arc better than the movie (ie, not as much Vogons), but the gun was original and funny and I liked Malkovich's charaacter so it evened out well. I can't wait to see the Guides' offices if they make a sequel.

SMITH

Like most others who've seen this movie by now, I'm a huge fan of the books. If I hadn't read the books beforehand I think I would've liked the movie alot more, but instead I spent my time thinking: "Why'd they cut that out?", especially when it came to the great scene at the start of the book where Arthur notices the bulldozer: "Yellow." Or the fact that the plans for the by-pass were in a disused toilet with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the leopard.' Classic.
Then again, I think the choice of actors was great, and the flyswats that attacked anyone who had an idea were hilarious! All in all, I think the movie standing alone was very funny, but in comparison to the book, it just doesn't cut it. But then, you can hardly expect it to, really.
Oh how I miss Douglas Adams!

What a strange coincedende. I just saw the movie today. By myself I might add. There was NO ONE in the theatre. Gotta say I was pretty disappointed. I loved the books, but the movie just didn't click for me. Of course, I might've been in a bad mood because they didn't show the Serenity trailer.

That song pops into my head at all sorts of times. Catchy thing, isn't it?

I LOVE the books. I thought the movie was okay. I really liked the casting and I thought Sam Rockwell was a great Zaphod. It was just hard to get DNA's language onscreen; it's the descriptions that make it so memorable. And of course they had to gut so much to make it fit into a movie running time. (As the previously mentioned "Beware of Leopard" exposition.)

So I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I'll probably go see it again just to pick up any references that I missed before.

Admittedly as a die hard fans of the radio, books and TV versions, this film left me a bit disappointed.

Although I have to say it was miles better than I thought it would be when I heard about it going into production.

I think the major highlights were the visual design- fantastic look for the Heart of Gold, the Magrathea planet builders (god that looked nice), even the Vogons looked like I pistured them though I felt sad thier ships were not longer "yellow." Also Nighy as Slartibartfast was great, Rockwell's Zaphod was a miracle find, and it was nice to have an on-screen Trillian I liked (although a character departure but I didn't mind that - sorry Sandra Dickenson is the only part of the TV cast I thought didn't work at all.) The Point of View gun was a great addition as well. Not to mention the original Marvin and Simon Jones cameos.

Part of me understood why extra structure and romance was grafted onto the story to make it into a proper film that held together better than a straight novel adaption. But by doing so it seemed to take away some of the uniqueness that is in Adam's work. so I'm conflicted on that one.

I do think the Vogons were overused and Anna Chancellor had a thankless role. They seemed to cut out so many of the good bits of the Guide and other dialogue that it almost seemed a waste.

And as a non-fan of muscals i wasn't amused by the opening Dolphin song. Like some of the Vogon buearocrat bits it felt like they were straining too hard to be Monty Python and not Douglas Adams (though I know they aren't light years apart).

But overall it was entertaining and had enough faithful and new bits to keep you laughing. Although I can see this is definately for the fans and less for newbies. It really helps if you've read the novel or heard the radio version (the definitive cast IMHO).

Anyone see the documentary on BBC1 last week? The people who made the mini series commented on how proud they were of their special effects - and then someone in America told them how great it was that they'd made the effects deliberately cheesy!

FANTASTICLAUGHINGFAIRY

After reading the book, I'll admit I am a little disappointed with some of the bits they missed out, although I still think it's great. The whole Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy thing is very me - I love the random weirdness of it all. DNA has to be the most brilliant genius that ever existed (although Joss is also very genius-like). I just love everything about it. I have to admit though after seeing more of the series I definitely prefer the film Trillian (the TV series one was so annoying) and Marvin (his brain is actually the size of a planet and Alan Rickman is just brilliant - he brought the manic-depressive robot to life and he actually sounded depressed - as opposed to just robot-like).
Anyway, that's just my opinion.
Oh, and Sam Rockwell was amazing!

METAPHORE

As a long time fan of the Radio broadcast and then the books and then the mini-series, Id have to say the movie was a bit of a dissapointment.
Was it bad? No, im sure if i had limited exposure to DNA's work i'd have thought it was hilarious. (and they did add some stuff that had me laughing pretty hard)
The casting was great and the effects were fantastic, but it all felt a bit rushed to me. And I really could have done without the love story element.
There were a few nods to the old fans, enough to keep me happy.
(did anyone notice that the robot in que at the Vogon office was Marvin from the mini-series? I was laughing my butt off with everyone staring at me during that one.)
