The news is taken from the official Firefly board but the thoughts and words (unless quoted) are my own:

Upn has announced that they have ordered 2 new sci-fi pilots at http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2003-01/23/10.00.tv
The pilots are:

SF Pilots OK'd By UPN

UPN has ordered two SF-themed pilots, the Zap2it Web site reported. One is Weapon X, about a government agent who gains superpowers after having computer chips implanted in his body. Silvio Horta (the SCI FI Channel's original series The Chronicle) wrote the pilot and will executive produce with Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo.

UPN has also ordered Newton, from writer Craig Silverstein (The Dead Zone) and producer Joel Silver (The Matrix), the site reported. That pilot tells the story of a family that moves to a new town, which also happens to be the testing site for an array of high-tech gadgetry.

Fox has also announced their new pilots, two of which have a fantasy/paranormal theme at http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2003-01/23/09.00.tv

Fox Orders Paranormal Pilots

Young women with special powers are at the heart of two drama pilots just ordered by Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The first, an untitled project from 20th Century Fox Television and Original Television and executive producer/writer Jon Feldman and executive producer/director Rob Cohen, concerns a recent college graduate who discovers that she's able to save lives by changing the course of events, the trade paper reported. Cohen will direct the pilot.

The second pilot, from 20th and Regency Television and executive producer/director Todd Holland and executive producer/writer Bryan Fuller, is an untitled drama about a twentysomething woman who helps people using her power to communicate with animals, the trade paper reported. Holland will direct the pilot.

Now I know everyone is going to jump on both network's efforts because of them passing (or cancelling) Firefly but I should note that the men helming both of UPN's effort (Silvio Horta and Craig Silverstein) have solid track records of producing quality work in the genre and I hope UPN gives both a shot.

Fox's efforts seem like crash exploitation (with one ripping off the red hot Dead Zone) with a high liklihood of casting the stereotypical "hot chick" in the title role and attempting to do little other than to tittilate teen-age boys. I could be wrong but the fact that no one on either creative team really works in the genre indicates bad things (the fact that no one on either creative team has done work that I find remotely interesting is further cause for concern).

"It looks like a great adventure...That's what it is; that's what it feels like. When I saw the pilot, it was really engaging. It was exciting. It was unusual. It threw me off every now and then. I think people will be grabbed by it." - Ron Glass, on the pilot, during an interview with the Indianapolis Star

I'm not going to boycott new Fox shows just because they canceled Firefly. I'm going to do it because I'm sick of disappointment when the shows inevitably go away. Fox's Friday lineup is strewn with the bodies of genre shows that have made it a season if they're lucky and then have disappeared. They weren't necessarily even great shows but even the decent ones weren't given much of a shot. Fox is only interested in finding the next X-Files-type smash. I warned my kids after week three of Firefly not to get too attached because of Fox's Friday night track record and unfortuately I was right again.
