I was rewatching the first season of both Firefly and Cowboy bebop, and it struck me as just how similar the two are. Two hard-working crews, sailing around in two piece of ships, wondering if they'll have enough cash on hand for that night's dinner. Some of the characters are very similar too. river and Ed are rather similar, and Faye is sort of Inara-ish. Just a little thought.

I completely agree. Also a lot of thematic similiarities. All the characters are defined by their dark pasts which through the course of the series they are trying to understand and come to terms with. The multicultural aspects of the future society. The obvious cowboy motif. Good stuff.

You know what, Bebop is a good series but not on par with Firefly, except the music. I'd venture to say the music of Cowboy Bebop is better than Firefly's.

I'm really not an anime fan, thats my real problem with the show. That and about 1/2 of the eps are completely lame. I'd love to see a condensed version in the form of a live action miniseries. The stories incredible. The style, the world, and the characters are all fantastic. The music is excellent. That'd be a helluva miniseries.

DUNKELPFERD

It's really nice that somebody noticed this. I saw the whole series of Cowboy bebop only a few months ago and was quite suprised to see the similarites between it and Firefly. I like in the end when they start splitting up, it's becomes apparent how they were like a family, a very disfunctional family, and that reminded me a bit of Firefly. They have their tough spots but they still work the best together.

I watch a little bit of anime and CB is probably the best series I've ever seen of its type. Having seen the BDH and having rewatched Firefly many times I found this to be a good temporary replacement for it. It's not as good as Firefly but it's great filler, and I agree the music is pretty awesome. Nice jazz/blues kinda stuff. The song on the last episode broke my heart.

PINGJING

I haven't seen all of Cowboy Bebop yet, still slowly working my way through it. But I agree that it's one of the best and most interesting anime I've watched. I love all of the characters for their little quirks - especially Ed! (On a side note, there was an anime conference in Boston last summer, and while I didn't go, I did get to see this girl dressed up as Ed. It was awesome!) And of course, the music is awesome. My friend has some of the tracks on his computer, but I'd love to have all of them.

The good thing about Firefly is that is has 9, not 4 characters. I like animes until it gets complicated. This is exactly why Firefly is the best Space/Western in my book.

Hahaha! Mine is an evil laugh... Now die!

I'll avoid a shameless plug to a fanfic I recently submitted with this very theme in mind and just get to my point...

Cowboy Bebop is less sci-fi/western and more sci-fi/film-noir in my opinion. The smoking, the music, the voice-over narration (such as Spike's in the Aliens parody show, or Jet's when he has to help his friend's daughter), the washed-out flashbacks (primarily Spike's last days in the syndicate), the dangerous/mysterious women (primarily Julia), the use of a syndicate...etc etc

Not that it doesn't have some similarities to Firefly and sci-fi/westerns...like the very fun "mushroom" episode. Or the fact that they're all bounty hunters. The very blatant one might be Andy who actually dresses up like a cowboy...

Trigun, to me, seems much more in vein of the sci-fi/western genre.

NANOMOOSE

I love Cowboy Bebop so much. It's a huge pile of symbolism, it is, quite apart from being very stylish and with music I suspect was downloaded directly from God.

Firefly occupies a very special place in my heart, though. And it's a little bit more...human? I don't know. But I agree with the above poster about the scifi/western vs sci-fi/noir thing. Cowboy Bebop isn't quite a space western. It is, however, quite brilliant. And also complete. They're much more understanding about this sort of thing in Japan. FOX, you foolish, foolish sonnuvas.

However, I disagree about the Ed and River similarities. Ed's almost purely comic relief, and I suspect much more connected to this particular reality than River. She's vaguely similiar, but the two characters occupy quite different roles.

Same with Faye and Inara, actually. Inara is class in a sequined gown. Faye's...not so much. If I wanted to pick two to compare, I think it would be Jet and Mal. They are boths the 'fathers' of their little created families.

Yub, yub.

I agree that Trigun is more sci-fi/western than Cowboy Bebop, but that's about all that is similar to Firefly. And, looking back, I think I might have been slightly intoxicated when I said Faye and Inara were similar The only reason I really thought Ed and River were similar was the lack of, er, sanity, that they share. More or less.

You know what honorable suicide gets us? Less honorable people.
