Would some kind soul please help me with the source of the TV or movie quote of the sentence "Our work here is done."

The character said the words in an unknowingly smug or self-righteous way.

By way of explanation, this quote popped out of my mouth yesterday to my teenage daughter after we finished running errands. Then, for the life of me, I couldn't remember where I had heard the quote. She guessed Superman but I don't think it was in the any movies. Perhaps, the 50-60's Superman TV series? Or, did the Lone Ranger say this to Tonto? I loved both shows as a kid but they did tend to take themselves a little too seriously.

Any help would be appreciated.

The tick ended his show that way once:

"Well, evil has been rousted and the babysitter’s been paid. Come heroes, our work here is done. You know, even though today was the worst day of my life, I learned many things. First, the world looks a lot different when you’re six inches tall and covered with feathers. Second, two heads are definitely NOT better than one. And finally, you CAN lay an egg and still feel like a man!!"

DOn't mean to hijack the thread but how good was the Tick cartoon show!!

"Well, once again, my friend, we find that science is a two-headed beast. One head is nice, it gives us aspirin and other modern conveniences... But the other head of science is bad. Oh, beware the other head of science, Arthur. It bites."

"Spoon! "

"Arthur, that belt is an accessory of evil, and evil is never in fashion. "

Thanks for the response. I've never seen "The Tick". I seem to recall that Ben Edland (sp?) was involved. Wasn't he one of the FF writers? Is "The Tick" being re-run anywhere?

Over night, I've been thinking about the quote. Did Batman, in the 60's TV series, use it with Robin? As in, "Come Robin, our work here is done." That seems to have the right amount of pompousness for that show.

That's a pretty common one - it was on Futurama when Zapp Brannigan said it after totally screwing something up, but I've heard it elsewhere too. My buddies and I have even said it from time to time ourselves. Is there a specific time frame you're thinking of?

It's a fairly generic phrase, used generally in a Batman to Robin sort of way. It's also turned up in Futurama (Tales of Interest, where Bender is the giant robot, he unleashes a giant flame fart and says it); Spaced (Tyres gets everyone to the club then thinks it in a voiceover and walks off into the cloud of smoke... before re-emerging, coughing); Friends (Chandler asks about Phoebe's creation 'Gold Man' "But what about things that are already gold?" "Then his work here is done."

I've put way too much thought into this, no?

Hmmmm.

For some reason I think it's a Groucho quote. I have a distinct feeling I can hear him say:

"Come on boys our work here is done"

I think from Duck Soup - but I'm not sure....

Yes Ben Edlund was 'involved' in the Tick. He was the creator/writer of the original comics many many years ago. True brilliance.

"I think we just ran over a ninja."
"It's not like it was a collie or anything."
