I've seen this argument a few times, and I thought it would be good to have it a bit more organized, instead of sprinkled through different threads.

Personally, I think she was bluffing. Just like she was when she "became the ship."

Simon always talked about jokes that River played on him. She was a goof-off. A brilliant mind in a girl that loves to dance. Notice that it wasn't really an organized dance either - it was free form. She's playfull. And even after the Alliance screwed her up, she was still River.

"We may experience some slight turbulence, and then... explode."

As far as we know, she can't. She's only said that once or twice and I think it was only to Jayne cause she knows what he did and she wanted to scare him. I'm pretty sure she is only Psychic and doesn't have Telekenisis.

You may all be taking that statement a bit too literally ;-)

In War Stories, River killed three of Niska's men by "doing the math" - definitely a brain activity. River also killed Jubal Early, indirectly, by using her brain to come up with the plan that coaxed him into leaving Serenity into Mal's ambush.

As Jayne said "What else could it have been" ;-)

There's also the argument that she may be able to influence what people think, at least slightly. I know I wondered if she had "encouraged" Jayne to try taking her for a nice shuttle ride instead of just sensing he was going to. The Jury is still out on that one though.

Agree that she may be talking about using her telepathy to kill. Or maybe she was hinting that she could go postal and kill the entire crew if she was triggered?

Well maybe she's telekenetic, but frankly I think people take too much too litterally, I hate to think what people might get into their heads if River made an off hand remark about wanting to turn into a bird and fly away from the academy or something, "River can turn into an Eagle!!!" perhaps...

The way she says it and the context in which it was said says only one thing to me:

She was messing with Jaynes head (no not like that!).

have to say, i never thought of river having 'abilities' in the strictly defined, here is the limit, this is where it stops and how far it goes and this is what it's called kinda way. all seems a little computer gamish (don't get me wrong, i'm an avid gamer, but i like my games and my TV seperate) i suppose i always thought of it more, well, okay, she's highly intuitive, she may well have exceptional abilities to pick up emotions, thoughts, sensations and feelings, but, 'abilities' or 'powers' (which i've seen used to, i know joss used it in the whole 'adolescant girl with super powers, but that seems more thena little flippant to me) it just doesn't sit right, doesn't conjure up the right feel for what she's got going on to me.
