There is a guy named Dr. Kalhoun who did a study on mice but some informtion I gathered recently is starting to scare me, what if this could happen to us?
Basically what he did was make a huge habitat with enough food to last until they got to 3000 mice. I can't remember exactly how many mice he put in but it was somewhere between 2 and 10. The mice reproduced like mad (not altogether surprising) but when the population got to about 2500, something happened. The mice went crazy! They started fight ing all the time and eating each other and stuff. The next generation of mice did the exact opposite, they just sat and groomed, they didn't breed and they rarely ate. That was the last generation, since they didn't reproduce they all just died out. Sound familiar?
The part that makes me link this to us is that in the past 26 years (1980-2006) the population has increased by almost 50%. That's huge! What if the thing with the mice could happen to us? 26 years isn't alot, if this keeps happening, well you get the idea. The cool part about this is that it is alot like Serenity if you think about it. The population crisis, the reavers, the people who stopped doing everything and just died.

It's an interesting and kinda ominous thought. The only thing I was thinking is that humans have a much higher cognitive ability than mice (obviously). And while the mice have awareness, they would have been following a fairly primitive automatic mentality*. As humans, we have a much higher awareness and reasoning ability. We would be able to see any possible similarities to the mice experiment before they happen, and act accordingly (how, I don't know, but still...). That's of course assuming that the 'powers that be' feel the need to actually do something about it.

*What I mean by this, is that the brain acts very differently depending on the amount of people around. It is generally accepted that when humans live in communities of 250 or under, that are independant to other communites, (as we used to a long, long time ago) there is no crime. 250 is the inherant number of folks in that we can remember a name, face and something about them. In this situation, our group mentality is very different to how we live today. There is no murder, no rape, no buglary, trespassing or any crimes at all. It isn't until communities exceeded these sizes by a large amount, that crimes really started happening. Whilst this is somewhat off topic, it does go to show how the brain acts differently in situations with various amounts of social contact, and how it is something that is not really in our control. It's just the nature of animals, and until we evolve forward, those psychological rules will remain.

At least, that's what the psychology and archaeology departments at college taught us...

It's been my experience that the vast majority of humans don't think; they rely on habit, reflex, and what others tell them to do (said others are also working on habit, they just have better tools [i.e., wealth and maybe education]).

There are some individuals who would recognize the pattern when it jumps up and clobbers them, but they'll be a minority, easily shouted down by the screaming hordes, the non-moving establishment, and the wealthy politicos.

Best place to survive is on the rim, where there's still room to move. Expand or die are the only choices.
