"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Hello - there are more and more folk committed to attending Dragon*Con every day, so I thought it might be time to 'bump' the concept of the Toga Party and get some more creative juices flowing...

Seryn has given me her blessing to start a new thread - so here is the main one she posted at the start of the last thread with the most up to date info on who is going as whom:

*******************************************************************************
QUOTE: Originally posted by seryn:
ok, in this one, i'll keep an uptodate as possible record of all thie different gods and goddesses we can find/think of and who has snaffled them (not that we can't have duplicates, but the owners of the Hyatt wont be too happy at having the lobby destroyed by thunderbolts)

Ok, so Far

ATHENA - Goddess of War and Wisdom - CallmeSerenity

HADES - God of the underworld - Jadehand

ARTEMIS - Moon Goddess of the Hunt - Ash

APOLLO - Sun God, patron of Artists - Ath

ZEUS - King of the Gods, (Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening!) -

HERA - Queen of the Gods, protector of women - Seryn

HERMES - Messenger god, patron of travellers and theives wore winged sandals and helmet and carried staff - reserved for Cozen

HESTIA - Goddes of hearth and home (most widely worshipped, and most level headed goddess!) - Phoenix Rose("wise Hestia") & VerseExplorer("wiser Hestia")

HEBE - Goddess of Youth -

APHRODITE - goddess of love and sexuality (mostly naked in every pic i've seen!) - Hells Kitten

EROS - god of love, had those arrows that made people fall in love (man did that ever backfire)

ERIS - goddess of spite and mischeif -

DEMETER - goddess of crops and grain -

PERSEPHONE - Goddess of Spring and (unwilling) Queen of the Underworld - Magdalena

HEPHAESTUS (however its spelt) - crippled god of fire and patron of craftsmen, married to Aphrodite (the poor sap) -

ARES - bad tempered and violent God of War, is knocking sandals with Aphrodite (who isn't?) - Citizen

MORPHEUS - God of Dreams (apparently the ultra realistic one where you find yourself naked at an office party? check the link below!) - LightmeDark

PHOBETOR - God of Nightmares (Morpheus's brother) -

PHANTASOS - God of Dreams "Particularly the surreal ones where you're flying over a lake of custard and seventeen giraffes blow raspberries at you." (i like that guy, he's funny) - Simonwho

ok, now i'm just going to start copying them whole 'cause that guys much funnier than me)

HYPNOS: HYPNOS is the God of Sleep, which he induces with purest opium smoked through a horn. Obviously the God of Hyppies. - RiverIsMyGoddess

HECATE - up until now she was just a name i used to scare away jehovas witnesses. Ok "Goddess of Hidden Wisdom, Change and Darkness" (Queen of Witches)

SELENE - Silvery Goddess of the Moon. She is pale, beautiful and indefinably alluring - Mai

EREBUS - God of Primordial Darkness and son of CHAOS - Nicodemus

Keep letting me know guys, and i'll add to these little profiles as and when i can.

OK, now, I want to see piccies! END QUOTE
********************************************************************************

Yeah - I want to see pic's too - and if anyone has any questions or wants to see the previous thread:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=11&t=25199

The basic guidelines are that you come as a Greek god or goddess and that you post your intention here...

TPage has also given us this link to an excellent website that has a list of Greek god/desses so if you are struggling take a peek:

http://www.godchecker.com/pantheon/greek-mythology.php?_gods-list

Enjoy - have fun! This is really Seryn's baby - not mine... thank you for starting this wonderful concept Seryn!!

Can't wait for D*C - now... start posting!!

EDIT: Here are a couple of very useful links taken from the previous thread:

CallMeSerenity found this one about making a basic ancient greek tunic/costume:

http://www.dl.ket.org/latin1/things/romanlife/greekdress.htm

VerseExplorer found this link to TogaBoy with instructions on how to make a toga:

http://www.howtomakeatoga.info/

CallMeSerenity found this site offering very reasonably priced completed garments for our cause:

http://www.funfolly.com/h/ca05a.htm

If we find more generally useful links let me know and I will add them to this initial post so that it is easy for others to look into!

Thanks for the costume update. I think if I do this than I want to be Selene, the moon goddess. So, whoever wants Hecate can have her.

Still don't know much about putting together the costume. I'm assuming just find a pretty sheet and drape it and tie it together?

Oh good, I have plenty of time to find a pretty sheet. How about a black one, for Hades? I'd love to find a way to make/buy a suitable 2-prong staff.

Don't forget that the wonderful VeX offered to share Hestia with me!
I still need to learn to drape the gorramn sheet, though. Heh.

I have dubbed thee Wise Hesti & Wiser Hestia! I hope you are both happy with the wording!!

Please note folks - this is not my baby - it is still definitely Serentiy & Seryn's project - and she asked me to especially tell the boys that the lads don't actually have to be mostly naked if they don't want to be!

That doesn't meant they can't be though... does it Seryn??

EDIT: Though this is still not my baby and all questions regarding choice and costume etc should be directed to Serenity or Seryn you will have to either PM me, or reply to one of my posts if you want me to alter anything on the list - since I have realised that by posting it there - I am the only one who can edit it... The toga boy (Who had the link to that website?) recommends NOT using sheets. They're not wide or long enough to work. He recommends buying fabric, which you can get pretty cheap, if you look around for it. Walmart and that sort of thing.

Here's his website: http://www.howtomakeatoga.info/

Seryn also found pages with easy patterns to make greek chitons and womenly outfits. But I don't remember those links.

Oh, well, no sheets should actually make things easier. 6 yards eh? I'll sort it out sometime in the next 7 months. I should be able to find something nice in that time.

Magdelena, I've decided to let Ash be Artemis, since she really wanted to be, and I'm going back to my first choice, Athena.

Could you update the list please? Ash as Artemis, Serenity as Athena.

TQ!!

I had my Artemis costume all picked out. Gonna have to go back to the drawing board. BUT! I get to wear a fun hat! I want the fun hat!

I'm thining of going with a black toga, as Hecate is not like the other Goddesses..

"Her considerable power over nature ensured her continued popularity, but she's never fitted in with the crowd. Any crowd. She's very much her own Goddess."
So I think I should be a bit different..

And btw- she is so fitting for me ,I am a very pleased albatross

When I was a child dressing up like goddesses was a game I played often.

I was a weird child & it never wore off

You forgot me :( I posted about 100 posts into the old thread, stating my intention to be

EREBUS: God of Primordial Darkness and son of CHAOS.

Even with the lights turned out he managed to father CHARON, THANATOS, HYPNOS, EROS and the FATES.

His consort appears to be NYX, the Goddess of Night. Although it's hard to see what they get up to in the dark, we understand that EREBUS spreads his gloomy mists to obscure AETHER's shining daylight... and HEMERA wafts him away again each morning.

Thank you Mags!!

Phoenix Rose, why not try out your sheet and see if it works for you? Maybe it will? Especially if it's a larger sheet, for a double or queen sized bed or something. And per-maybe-haps if it doesn't quite fit, it can be augmented with another piece of cloth to make the whole thing work. Like you could have a simple long straight skirt on underneath and the sheet could be the top of the chiteron? You could pin it at one shoulder and then have it hang down and then tie some gold braid around your waist? I bet Seryn would have ideas on making that work. Just an idea.

I've decided I'd like to do a blue for Athena, something not too dark, not navy or midnight. More a smoky blue. And then I want her helmet, because I love the helmet. Gotta figure that one out. And then I want to get a little stuffed owl, because I remember she had a pet owl. And then I think I'll pick up a cheapo plastic sword and shield. How does that sound?

OH! And have we decided what night we're doing this? I don't remember us making a decision. Normally all the costumes come
out on Saturday night, but if we have another shindig.....If it hasn't already been decided, then I would humbly suggest Sunday night.

Also, doing a brief google search for Athena style helmets brought me to this page, which has lots of costumes. Men's tunics for under their toga, men's sandals (and cheap, too! Lookie!) and other bits and bobs. Plus some lovely looking women's outfits for those that aren't inclined to make their own.

Prices seem pretty decent, thought I'd pass it along.

Thank you so much Serenity - that is a good site and since I am encouraging folk from the 76th to check this party out - it is a good idea to remember that not all will have costuming skills... mind you - I can't say I have any, but I feel that a toga is something I can manage!!

I am going for green - to represent the spring aspect of Persephone - and gold - to represent the fire of Hades! I might actually have to coordinate with my captor and King on some details closer to the time!

I'll add that excellent link to the top posting - then I am off to bed... tis 3am here!!

What??? You would chose Japan over us???

(I am chosing to ignore the Mal's hands all over Nandi's dress comment in order to maintain my dignity - at least what's left of it...)

By the way - it is an open invitation and I don't think anyone meant it to be anything other than that... it is supposed to be an opportunity for Browncoats who love to dress up to get into the spirit of something with a different scope for costume and to get to know one another better!! - I kind of jumped on the band wagon and even started a new thread... and I wanted to see you as Aphrodite!! SERYN

Helllo!!!

First of all - so sorry its taken me so long to drag my butt over here - i've been reading it as its gone along, but not yet replied, for which I do apologise.

Second of all I don't own this project! I think it was initially Serenitys idea, and something the Nook folk were going to do, but since interest was piqued elsewhere, its open to all comers! Personally I think it would be really neat to have a whole pantheon of gods lounging around D*C (my main thought was in the que's, remember to bring grapes and our own cushions and its like an Olympus home from home) which is why i started assigning 'characters' as opposed to just saying 'turn up as a deity'. Which is the only decision i made - everything else is open to interptetation.

Thirdly. CHITONS!!!!!!

For the basic chiton you need not one but two sheets (front and back, or if feeling adventurous either side - more on that in a minute)

Each sheet, traditionally has to be the width of you with your arms outstretched from wrist to wrist.
Lengthwise, it has to go at least from ankle or ground up to the collar bone, then you can have extra to make the fold over to whichever length you desire, either waist or knee or just above the original hem, or wherever you want(for example Athenas is allways hanging ree to the waist). You can hem your fabric but it looks better with a braid on it - original chitons would be woven to the correct size and finished with a border, I do have some examples of the typical patterns.

Then come the variations!

You'll need shoulder joins - these can be at any interval along the top - the wider out you go from the centre the more of a draped 'cowl' neckline you'll get (on boys it looks better just straight accross, but its personal style) then you can either pin the rest of the outer fabric at intervals down the arm, or leave it to drape at the sides. then the rest of the chiton is pulled in by a belt at the sides, or scarves ribbons or braid that can criss cross over backs and front and wrap around the boddy to make it figure conforming.

Warning!

Go with the finest, heaviest drape fabric you can find, these are not slimming costumes! Infact they will add quite a bit of bulk if you get a pouffy unrully fabric with a mind of its own.

Wash all the fabric at the highest temperature you can, just to knock a bit of the spirit out of it and make it hang - you can steam later as well to make it stay in place better.

The best fabrics i've found so far are lightwieght linens, muslins and wools - like pashmina wool, but mucho expensive - there are cheaper options. You can also use silks - Asia was producing silks and trading at that time as far as i know, but still, very expensive. A chiffon layer over a fine cotton would look grand and is probably what i'm going to do myself.

Warning two!

Chitons are not stable garments - at somepoint, something will be unintentionally flashed if you're not very careful. What i would suggest is making the chiton and then sewing it in place - wear an old bra and a tie a wide ribbon around your waist then once you have the chiton on and you're happy with the arrangement pin or tack it to the ribbon and bra then sew it in place more firmly once its off.

At this point i should say that you will need help - Greece was a slave economy and man they ade use of it.

Also give the braid a bit more slack and sew it at the crossing points, or it will slip and strangle you at somepoint.

You can even find a suitable dress if you want and make it over to look like a chiton. I promise i'll post ideas at some point.

(by the way, all of these tips were learned the hard way at a NYE costume party - i hope you know how i suffered for you! )

you can also use colours if you want - they were used, but only sparingly as dyes were expensive - but what do gods care for expence?
and cloth of cold and silver were also used, how much you use them though should be limited by taste.

As for individual ideas, I've had a few so far, for different gods, feel free to swipe any of them yopu like the sound of.

Aphrodite. This is that side chiton i was talking about. Fold each sheet in half and hold against body with the folds outermost, pin at a distance away from the fold to leave a comfortable but not huge arm hole, and rest the pinned points on shoulders. This should leave you with the rest of the fabric hanging down either side - just cross the fabric sides over each other at anypoint you want and SEW DOWN! (beleive me, this is the most unstable style of all) then ties with cross braids etc. This way you could have a decollatage as plunging as you please, both front and back, and a nice slinky slit up the front and back for showing off legs. you can pin the slits as far down as you want, or have them free and wear a satin slip or tunic underneath. You can also have the outer chiton longer to hit the ground if you want - especially if in blue - that whole rising from the waves thing.
The idea was to make the chiton out of fine pale pink peach or aqua coloured chiffon with a fine braid trin, and then have a low necked tunic on underneath - very sexy, but still covers enough!
Hecate or Nyx could do the same but in black or dark blue with heavier braid down the neckline and Nyx could have sequins dotted onto the tunic underneath for stars. I also thought of a cloak with silver sequins on the underside of nyx worn very much the same way as the cloak on this one -
http://www.funfolly.com/h/c/c0504.htm

Another tip - tunics - the greeks had crinkle fabric - that stuff you can buy that is pre creased into a haphazard concertina - it makes comfortable, form fitting (very simple - a tube with arm holes slashed into it) tunics and always comes in nice shimmery finishes. You cant sew the chiton directly to it unless you anchor it with nonstretch ribbons or something (cotton tape is cheap cheap cheap) but it makes a perfect base for both sexes.

For boys, a straight or t shirt shaped undertunic in this and a draped chiton or himation (big cloak) would fit the bill perfectly - not to revealing and perfectly butch looking.

Boys, as befor - a straight neckline accross cloak pinned over one shoulder and a waist tie is a good way to go. Togas are actually a total bitch and demand rigid posture and minimal movement of a dignified manner at all times - if you want to do one (despite their being Roman! ) practice, and pin it discreetly in place.

i've left something off im sure...

oh yes!

for ladies with a larger chest - you may want to adopt the roman style of wrapping scarves around you chest in a particular way for which i will post pictures and instructions - its kind of like ye ancient cross your heart bra and will hold all in place in a surprisingly comfortable way (i'm not even graced with a decent sized chest and i've often wished we had them instead of underwires!) so...

next post i promise will have pictures, diagrams, instructions and a nice big bottle of booze. (to get me through the typing of it)

bye for now - i really can't wait!

Since this thread has been a little quiet for a while I thought I would put a picture of my godess in a chitton of sorts - not that this is what I am going with - and I am actually working on softening some chiffon for the over thingy... but here's an idea...

I have some wonderful drapey fabric in the form of a jersey which looks like cotton and has a beautiful movement to it...

He he he he... I realised that she isn't really showing a chitton at all - but I love the colours and I have started work on my costume - I was looking at all the threads last year with some awe and envy and now that I know that I am joining you this year I just had to get into it all!

And it is just 6 months and 1 week until we all meet up as gods and goddesses in Atlanta!! Wheeee!!

Oh - and for my 40th shindig - the week before I fly out to the US I am having the theme of 'deities and religious figures' I get to wear my Persephone outfit twice that way!!!

TRISTAN

I am unfortunately withdrawing my attendance in this very shiny costume-themed evening. I will not have the time between now and the Con to create the costume, and I will probably not have the time during the Con to play....
So, Haesphestus is back on the market, if anyone is interested!

TINADOLL

Me= Eris aka Discourd

Eris is the Greek goddess of discord and strife. She is Ares' constant companion and follows him everywhere. Eris is sinister and mean, and her greatest joy is to make trouble. She has a golden apple that is so bright and shiny everybody wants to have it. When she throws it among friends, their friendship come to a rapid end. When she throws it among enemies, war breaks out, for the golden apple of Eris is the Apple of Discord. She did this once during the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, and this act brought about the Trojan War.

I am very mischevious! And very bitchy.

And yes- I follow around Ares all the time

Here is me with the rest of the family!

SERYN

i've completely changed my mind and decided that i'm going to go do my costume in the style that they used on 300.

yup, thats right, i'm totally abandoning historical accuracy. (i'm scared, i've never done it before!)

i sat doodling a load of different styles, some of them looked good, i think i'm going to stick though with one quite similar to the one she wore at the council meeting, the deep purply one.

I'll find those doodles i think and post them, somme of them were very fun and the way they were made (with shoulder straps and stuff) meant they could be pre sewed - handy for putting on in the morning.

Byt the way, if anyone wants me to make them a costume (boys in particular i'm thinking) i'm more than happy to give it a go. I was thinking of making some anyway - selling them on ebay and whatever.

ah well, i'm so glad to see this thread still around
I have to do all that work i promised to do - like posting all the research etc.

I think that sounds awesome Magdelena!

I stopped at the craft store over the weekend to buy a bit o' yarn and some fabric to line a purse I've knitted and I found fabric for Mai's Selene costume and trim for Ath's Apollo costume, but nothing that struck out for me.

But, I know exactly what I want, so it's just a matter of finding it.

I was watching Rome, and all the women have this nice dresses that tie or fasten at the shoulders and I think that would be lovely, except for the problem of bra straps. Trying to decide what to do about that. I could maybe do a, oh what's it called Seryn? When you make a little drawstring that gathers it all up. I have a shirt that does that on one side and then you tie it in a little bow. That would be easy to do and you could do it wide enough that you could hide bra straps underneath.

Anyway, rambling now.

And Seryn,

have you found any good costume patterns for men? I can find instuctions on making a costume for a woman, but not for the menfolk.

I'm trying to figure out how many yards I'd need to buy if I find something I like. I'm making 4 costumes atm.

I'm tired of having to go hunting for this, so I'm bumping it up.

I've bought materials to make CallmeAth's Apollo, Mai's Selene and cozen's Hermes. I had to special order my fabric (grr. argh.) I haven't done any actual sewing yet, but I will start soon!

MAI

Yay for costumy fun! I've seen quite a few different styles of the "roman" shoe, but none in the color I want. My question is, if you wanted to dye shoes to a particular color, what would be the best way to go about it? I know there is RIT dye, but is there any way to prevent the color from running or coming off on your skin?

Not that I know of. I got shoes dyed at a shoe repair shop once. He dyed them black for me. It wasn't very expensive. Depending on what the shoe is made out of, you could probably waterproof it. Call a shoe repair shop and ask?

I just want sandals with the tongs that lace up my legs. I've seen them for men, but the ones I've seen for women are all gold or glittery or something. I just want plain.

I haven't done any research into what this whole thing is about, for I only browsed long enough to make one perception and be HIGHLY offended by it...

I cannot believe that you would pick ANYONE besides me to be Ares.
