REGINAROADIE

Hey All

Well, the summer has officially started with the jaw dropping $59 million opening DAY gross of SPIDER-MAN 3. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet, since practically everywhere you go it's SPIDER-MAN 3 stuff everywhere. And since no one's started one yet, I'll get the ball rolling with a thread about SPIDER-MAN 3. I caught a matinée of it yesterday.

In short, while I did enjoy it and the various aspects that made up the movie, I think that it's time for Raimi and Co. to take a break from the franchise and let it sit for a while. After hitting the heights of the second film, I felt that this one had way too much stuff going on and that while the set pieces and the main story was great, I was getting a bit bored with it. Peter can only swing around for so long and save Mary Jane (again!) for so long before it starts to become boring. Garth Franklin, over at darkhorizons.com wrote a review for it, and I share a lot of the same views he has, so I'll just link you to it.

http://www.darkhorizons.com/reviews/spiderman3.php

I loved Eddie Brock and Venom, but I thought Peter's "dark side" was more goofy than scary. Only when he actually threw punches at the jazz club and hit Mary Jane that it actually clicked. And James Franco in this one was at his best as Harry.

Oh, and Stan "The Man' Lee and Bruce Campbell's cameo (Bruce actually got a credit this time. Hope the untold millions that were spent on this trickled down to him) were the biggest geek-gasm moments in the film, as well as Venom being brought down.

SHINY

Awful. Terrible mis-mash of too many villans, plot-lines, and events which almost never strikes the right tone at the right time. Waste of 2 and a half hours (and we got free tickets) Almost as bad as the Hulk! ('nuff said)

SINGATE

SPOILERS ABOUND, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM.

While I won't go as far as Shiny I do forsee this one being regarded as the weakest of the three films. I understand that the creators wanted to cram as much in as possible seeing how this may be the last one but there was simply way too much going on.

Three villains is just plain overkill. What makes it worse is that two of the baddies come off as far too sympathetic. Sure The Sandman is a criminal but he's doing it all for his daughter which pratically gives him a free pass. We can even forgive Harry because he believed Peter was responsible for his father's death. The only true evil in the film is Venom.

As much as I enjoyed seeing "dark side" Spidey he did come off more humorous than scary. Watching Peter strut around NY was pretty damn funny though. Speaking of funny J. Jonah Jameson was once again the height of comic relief.

I didn't find the Peter/Harry reconcilliation very believable. They have two incredible fight scenes, the second ending with Harry being disfigured, then Harry's butler gives him a conveniently timed pep talk and all is forgiven.

I'm guessing Harry's death was supposed to be a take on "the sins of the father will be visited upon the son" but I didn't particularly like the resolution for that character. Killing Brock/Venom on the other hand makes absolutely no sense. I thought for sure he would be spun off into his own movie considering Macguire and Dunst only signed on for three films.

A lot of people will probably read this and think I hated this film which would be untrue. I am able to enjoy something while recognizing and admitting it has faults. Above all else this is a summer action movie. The story is good, the actors all played their parts well, and the action sequences are incredible to behold. I would recommend to anyone who asked but it is far from perfect.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

Am looking forward to see it, maybe next week. I'm just looking to be entertained. I find it funny that some have called this ' the best of the 3 ' and others have panned it pretty bad. There's alot in this movie, 3 villians , plot twits,etc...so I know not everyone can be pleased. Between this , Pirates, Fantastic 4 , Transformers......it's gonna be a long summer!

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

LWAVES

Okay this review comes with a big BUT (not a big butt) ;-)

I really love the first two movies and was really looking forward to seeing this. And whilst everything is in place as it should be I have to agree that there is just too much of it. The action scenes are great, especially the finale, but all the bits in the middle (which is one of the things I liked about the other movies) just went on too long.
I found myself wishing that something exciting would happen. The jazz club scene in particular just seemed way too long and even though it ended great with what Peter did to MJ, did we really need a whole dance routine?? Surely they could have shortened it a bit??

Now for the BUT...

It didn't help that the row behind us had about 7 mid-teens in it and they kept talking and mucking around and banging seats. One of them kept explaining who everybody was as soon as they appear on screen and explaining their role in the movie.
And despite several requests (some strongly worded) by myself and others they just ignored us.
I really wish they'd put attendants back into each screen so that they can deal with little shites like that and throw them out.

Anyway, to conclude, I thought it was a good film but not a great film. Maybe on second viewing (DVD at home without the little shites) I'll feel better about it.
And I think they should leave it there. Whilst there are other stories to tell I think they should leave it be now. 3 films is enough.

You might think three is enough, but Columbia apparently thinks not. They're looking to make three MORE SPIDER-MAN movies.

As lucrative and money generating as they are, personally I think they should stop, or at the very least take a break to regenerate. You know that saying "It's hard to say goodbye when you don't leave."

Also, very few franchises can successfully make it to six. Stuff like STAR WARS, STAR TREK and HARRY POTTER can because they have a massive, overreaching arc that tells one huge story. The only other franchise that focuses on a character following the same formula over and over is James Bond. As for Spider-Man, I'm not sure if it could last to six.

Normally for comic-book franchises, three is when they're starting to show age, and if it's not killed by then, then #4 is when it officially dies. I think the only part 4 that achieved success was STAR TREK IV; THE VOYAGE HOME. Other than that, #4's are franchise killers.

i consider my self a true webhead and i am sad to say that i did not like it. they rewrote so much of it. parts held true to the real spiderman, but so much of it was just pure garbage that they created on there own. they have wonderfull story lines with the exising comics, why change them.

ZEEK

oh come on it wasn't that bad. I thought the worst part was the major cheese factor the movie had. I mean the "evil" hairdo? That's a little much. Oh and the american flag thing. cheeeeeezy

I thought venom was laid out great though. I just wish there was more time in the film for him. I mean he hardly got to harass and fight at all.

I didn't really like the Harry and Peter reconciliation too much. I mean he hated Peter and then just changed his mind? I would have much rather had him show up to save MJ and say he was only there for her.

I didn't really understand the Sandman conversion either. 1 second he's a giant murderous monster the next he's asking for forgiveness?

Still all in all it was a good summer flick and had plenty of action and just enough storyline.

STORYMARK

Definitly the weakest of the three script-wise. Just too much sloppy writing, and underdeveloped plots/characters.

The action scenes were great, though.

I really enjoyed it, though I'd agree it was too many villains. I hope that the "too many villains" complaint feeds back to the execs who forced Sam to add Venom at the last minute and made it a bit difficult to juggle. I really though James Franco was the stand out acting wise and I ADORED Bruce's roll ( oh and I wouldn't worry about Bruce's money situation as he is 1/3 owner of Renaissance Pictures with Sam and Rob Tapert and they produced all the Hercules, Xena, etc together)

REDLAVA

I was pretty disappointed with it as well. The bad part about it was you needed each of the five story archs in there to help the other ones along. But having them all there made the story sluggish in most parts and then to fast and strained in others. And was it me or was this one really sappy.

And I could have done without the giant American flag and evil Peter strutting down the street with his evil Peter hair. I wish they could have devoted the entire movie to Peter and Venom and left the whole Sand-man and Harry plot out. But like I said before, with the way it was written they almost needed it in there to help everything else move along. I'm feeling generous, so I'll give it 3 out of 5 stars.
