Ahhh, Dune by Frank Hebert; one of my all time favorite books... awesome story...eco-terrorism long before anyone knew what the hell THAT was! (grin..)... Now as to your question; well, while the made-for-tv film you've got followed the book much more closely than the older theatrical film- in my opinion the film did a better job with casting; basing that on what the characters looked like in the novel; the old film was better...come'on Max Von as Liet!! How could you miss!!??? and Duke Atriedes EXACTLY how I pictured him in the film; william hurt, notsomuch; so...yeah that's my opinion... Haven't heard of any sequels but they would probably be based on later books which, IMHO did not hold a candle to the original; oh, and anything written by Herbert's son...[shudder]...again IMO. (smile)

i lOVE the hurt version; the earlier version was just too increadibly different for me to make any sort of piece with it. to be honest i never pay much attention to descriptions, so i didn't mind the casting, i thought everyone was pretty good. there is a sequal, called Children of Dune, with many (but not all) of the same actors. the sequal movie encompasses both the book it was named for and Dune Messiah (which takes place between the two). as sister said, the book sequels weren't even remotely comparable. i thought the movie sequel was enjoyable, but not outstanding.

Ahh... but i'm a big William Hurt fan!:)

the tv paul is pretty bad... but i haven't watched it in a fair while... i thought they did the story pretty well (if i remember) better than Lynch - but his film is more... extraordinary. (but it does have sting - eew!)

i'm with you about the books - but i always thought 'Children' would make good tv...
oh and yes yes yes to the great Max Von!

I actually enjoyed both versions. There were however two things which seemed a bit off in the mini-series: 1. William Hurt was not a great choice. I like him well enough as an actor but he just didn't fit, 2. A lot of the costumes were flat out ridiculous.

The follow up mini-series Children of Dune was quite good. The only thing some fans may take issue with is that the twins are portrayed as considerably older in the TV version.

They made me appreciate the complexity of the old Lost In Space designs...

Solidly in the Lynch camp here, and the extended version that's available has a STELLAR transfer of the theatrical version on it!!!

Probably closer to River's age. The actors who played them do a marvelous job.

The actor that plays Leto II is James McAvoy, who has since gone on to star in "The Last King of Scotland" and had the pivotal role of Mr. Tumnus in "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe". He's good in Children of Dune and looks like he's on his way to becoming a well respected actor. For what it's worth, he was 24 when Children of Dune was made.

The general reason the twins were protrayed by older actors is due to the general inability of a public audience to understand their maturity. We as dune fans know that the twins were born aware with all the ancestrial memories of a Bene Gesserit Revrend Mother. You'd only really understand the deep meaning of that if you had actually read the novels. Sci-Fi had to write in older actors to allow ignorant viewers the means to suspend disbelief regarding the mature decisions of the characters.

I'm glad someone referenced the idiot costumes that the characters wore in the first Sci-Fi Dune film. Thank goodness they toned it down in the second.

Now if they'd only make God Emperor of Dune.

Do not fear me. Our's is a peaceful race and we must live in harmony.
