So what if violence didn't actually ensue while robbing that bank in Serenity, HE'S A THIEF!!! He aimed his weapon at innocent folk, gorramit!! He's no better than a terrorist- and let's not forget the unarmed, SURRENDERING man on Haven...what kind of fool calls Reynolds a HERO??? Only a big damn idiot, far as I can see.

Actually, I was hopin' to provoke a lively discussion- I LIKE that Mal's not a simple 'good guy', and I enjoy his progression from soldier to lost boy to thief, and ultimately, to Big Damn Hero.

Fools like me, I guess. I have a very broad and complex definition of a hero. Plus I am beginning to think I'm slightly uncivilized.

May have been on the losing side, still not convinced it was the wrong one.

did you forget that he defeated the evil alliance by spreading word of their failings. also he saved river from the undercover alliance guy in Serenity (the pilot not the movie).

Mal said it best at the end of Jaynestown when Jayne was reflecting on the hero worship he was receiving by the Mudders.

I will not repeat it here. You will have to watch it yourself on you own DVD.

Define hero please.

Jason, Heracles, Odysseus, Robin Hood. These are all called hero by most and all are murderous thieves.

I know........and I think you have done that. It's just I don't have the time. If I did, I would point ask you to define hero and then direct you to the 'Hero' project ( http://www.supersecretthingy.com/)because it asks similar questions. Nathan Fillion is a part of it too, so it's sort of a two-for-one link. I mean, if I had the time I would do that. But I don't. So I won't.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

A hero is someone who gets other people killed.

I guess Mal qualifies.

Innocent people get guns pointed at them all the time by "Heros"... In movies, tv, AND yes real life (see Iraq).

You have to define "hero" within the context of the series and film, not the context of real life on 21st century Earth.

That "SURRENDERING" guy on Haven was comming out of the ship that had just KILLED everyone in all of Haven, including women, children and a priest. Should Mal just let him go? So he can go back to the Alliance and kill more women, children and priests?

As for stealing, again in the CONTEXT of the movie they've resorted to holding up ALLIANCE run facilities because they were harboring innocent fugitives from the Alliance(a heroic act in and of itself some might argue) and therefore they couldn't get anything close to legit work. Maybe you missed the whole scene between Mal and Simon WHERE HE EXPLAINS ALL THAT? Also, if they hadn't been there "stealing" from the Alliance, those people who Mal told to get in the vault would have been eaten alive by the reavers.

They saved the whorehouse in Heart of Gold. They helped out the townsfolk at the beginning of Our Mrs Reynolds (for little or no pay). Mal saved the Alliance officer from the Reaver in Bushwacked. They could have killed Patience in cold blood in the pilot Serenity... And they gave BACK the Medicine that they stole in the beginning of the Train Job when they didn't have to, for which Mal eventually was tortured, died and brought back, and had his ear cut off. And when Simon and River were kidnapped they went back a saved them when it would have been WAY easier just to leave them. So within the Context of the series\film, YES they ARE big damn heros.

"No better than a terrorist"...? Are you out of your frakin brainpan? Really? They never bombed a building full of innocent people, never kidnapped people and cut their heads off for politcal purposes, they never did ANYTHING close to that...

Just because someone doesn't wear tights and have an S on their chest, or kills murderous bad guys instead of capturing them and teaching them moral lessons doesn't mean they can't be considered heros... Again its the context that counts.

Even if you are trying to provoke "lively" discussion, calling people who DO consider them heros "fools" and "big damn idiots" is completely uncalled for.

Of which I am proudly one, my good man. Best get your sense of humour back on- if you know me you know Serenity is my favourite movie of all time, and Mal is my favourite character.
But I can understand your attitude- the 'Verse is a passionate place is all.

Ok, well I don't "know" you and therefore don't "know" your sense of humor... I didn't realize you were just trolling so that someone would waste 20 minutes responding to a pointless post...

It's not pointless, I wanted to hear arguments against the initial post, like:
Quote:

I guess Mal qualifies.

Or:
Quote:

See? You didn't waste your time.

So why can't we define "hero" outside the context, huh? Would that make Mal any less the hero by the end of Serenity? Or by today's standards would that make him just an anti-establishment conspiracy nut/whistle blower? Cause I think he'd STILL be a hero as far as I'm concerned...

And, didn't you see the "Devil's Adv" signature on the initial post? Being provocative & trollin' ain't always the same thing. Still, sorry if I ruffled your feathers any.

I don't know if I can actually name any modern day heroes but to me a hero is someone who does the selfless kind of work that can change other people's lives.
Those that do extensive charity work (without pay or benefit).
Those that will look after the terminally ill and provide some kind of ease or comfort during the last moments.
It doesn't neccessarily have to be about actually saving someones life either. Just being able to give up everything you have for someone else can be enough. I'm thinking particularly of those kids you see who have parents that are ill and they basically give up their childhood to look after them.
There are other instances but they are the ones I can think of now.

As for Mal in our show. He is a hero to us because he is the leader of our group and because he will save the crew, thereby saving our fave characters. That is why he is a hero to us.
If he existed in the real world I don't think many would see him as such. In fact I don't think many people in the 'verse would see him as a hero.

And Chris for starting this post....

You are a bad man.

Yep.
Firemen too.
Peeps that give of themselves to do right by other folk.
Soldiers that go above & beyond.

Certainly the government wouldn't, that's for sure and for certain.
See...it still confusticates me as to why the pro-war, pro-establishment, anti-libertarian peeps in these parts like the show/movie. Mal has to embody most that threaten their ideas of a well-run society.
