Dollhouse is of course Joss' new series.

And it sounds almost like what happened with Firefly. They didn't like the first pilot, so now Joss has had to make another, and according to this reviewer it wasn't as good.

Oh well.

I'm kinda bummed because it's the Futon Critic that wrote the review. If there's someone I respect who knows what shows will or will not make it on TV, he is one of them. So, yeah, this isn't good.

There has been a wild rumor at my comic shop. If Dollhouse fails, Joss may sign on as the lead story writer for the hour long Star Wars live Action drama coming to a network in 2011.
It would be weird to see a Star Wars tv show better than the original trilogy wouldn't it?

I admit, I don't know enough about how things work in Hollywood, but if Dollhouse fails on FOX, perhaps it's time for Joss to rethink his commitment with FOX in turning out the four (I think it was 4) series for them in his contract and head back over to the CW.

I mean, who wants to work for an employer who just gets in the way of one's creative work? I certainly don't. It just makes for not so happy faces all around and everyone can't party right.

I always thought the Sci-Fi network, and Joss would be a match made in creative heaven. Still don't know what all the hubub was about when Joss tried shopping Firefly to the network. I believe it was budget concerns on why he passed them up.
I figure if Sci-Fi can make a fairly big budget show like Battlestar Galactica, they certainly could have revived Firefly.

This has just been an epically bad Scifi day for me. First I learn they whitewashed the Avatar cast (which happened over a week ago, but I had finals so I was not able to join the comisery) and now the Dollhouse Review.

Reading his review of the first pilot, and then the second, I would really like to see both and judge for myself but I can feel I would dig the first much more than the newer, Fox sanctioned upgrade which sounds almost as unappealing as Jesse McCartney being cast as Zuko (I'm sorry, again it's been a painful night for a fangirl and I'm freaking about what they will do to my favorite sociopath, his sister Azula... i keep on imagining Leighton Meester and I... just... nevermind). What particularly got me was the fact that Futon Critic said the humor was gone from Pilot numero 2. Regardless Joss always talks about heavy stuff, there is always some kind of humor to keep it going the way to too dark and unappealing. Also the title change of Doll to Active is just... off. I know that's so minute compared to the big picture, but it's honestly nagging me a lot.

Neverless I will give it a shot. It just doesn't look good and I want Joss to get far and away from the creative sucking network that is Fox. I say NBC, which is pretty open with ideas and scifi and giving shows their shot. They seem to care more about the show itself rather than ratings (30 Rock as an example) and while some of their Scifis haven't been the best, the quality in terms of budget, cinematography and overall look have been excellent. SciFi Channel is a definite second... which is owned by NBC...

Forgive my writing pattern. I'm still trying to digest everythig.

Ash

Personally I'd rather Joss work with CBS than The CW as the CW is too fledgling right now based on how many households get it. CBS is also not known to mess with the greats of TV and their work (Joss being one of the greats) and they value excellent programming coming from quality minds (no Ghost Whisperer jokes or mentions of Jericho or Joan Of Arcadia please). Just my $.02. Out!

Sounds like PsyOp sabotage by Fox, again.

I predict Joss will use his rumpled wiles to slip more and more humor into Dollhouse as episodes progress, like he did in FF.

Joss uses humor as the "anchor" for Neuro Linguistic Programming, like Tony Robbins uses a clenched fist.

By censoring the humor, Fox has castrated the NLP in Dollhouse.

Why censor humor during an econimic Depression, when Hollywood used humor in theaters to help themselves get rich by helping poor folks forget the previous Great Depression?

Keep your friends close and enemies closer, appears to be the mission statement for Fox.

Manufacturing Multiple Personality Disorder, aka Dissociative Identity Disorder, has been a Top Secret for CIA for over 50 years, and for the Euro royals for 100s of years. CIA kills their MKULTRA sexslaves and assassins by age 30 (because biological changes recover memory), and anyone else who gets in the way of Project Monarch.

Why would Joss keep returning to this topic?

I stick to me thesis that Joss is CIA. Not the evil, Nazi-Project-Paperclip coup-d'etat assassinate-the-president 9/11-inside-job CIA, but the infiltrate-and-regain-control geek-CIA.

Hmmm - sounds like a fanfic? Joss as action hero? Meek mild-mannered Hollywood producer by day, Mr Smith by night?

Dollhouse as PsyOp deprogramming of real MPD/DID assassins during the 2nd US Civil War?

Just a fanfic, of course.

That just sounds like fanboy fantasy, especially since they have supposedly been working on the scripts for that series for almost a year. It was about a year ago that they started hiring writers for that show.

The flip side being, a show on CW needs far fewer viewers to be considered a hit. On CBS, which is the top network, the ratings would have to be pretty big to sustain it.

Well that's a disappointing article. The lack of humor is really sad. That's a keystone of Joss's work IMO. Without that it's much harder to fall in love with his style of writing. Hopefully it was just for the first episode because they didn't have time for anything but laying the ground work of the series.

I still get that sinking feeling about this show.

I hate to say it, but I do too. I just know that big networks = big pressure. I don't envy the spot Joss is in right now. It may be the same as blowing up a thousand balloons for a birthday party that no one attends.

5 million viewers to Fox is like nothing at all. Let's hope Dollhouse breaks the "cult" show curse surrounding Whedon's work, and hits the mainstream.

I will watch this show when it comes to britain even if its not that great, just to support Joss, but I'm having doubts about how good it's going to be. It's pretty clear now that F*x have been a very negative influence on it. Hopefully if it gets popular enough, the execs will gain more confidence in Joss and give him more leeway
